27th Aug 1990, Stevie Ray Vaughan was killed when the helicopter he was flying in, hit a man-made ski slope while trying to navigate through dense fog. Vaughan had played a show at Alpine Valley Music Theatre, East Troy, Wisconsin with Robert Cray & His Memphis Horns, and Eric Clapton. Vaughan was informed by a member of Clapton's crew that three seats were open on a helicopter returning to Chicago with Clapton's crew, it turned out there was only one seat left; Vaughan requested it from his brother, who obliged. Three members of Eric Clapton's entourage were also killed.

Dallas will recognize two Oak Cliff legends in a dedication ceremony next month.

Famed blues guitarists Stevie Ray Vaughan and his brother, Jimmie Vaughan, will be honored during a public artwork dedication at Kiest Park on Oct. 3, which would have been Stevie Ray Vaughan’s 67th birthday. Stevie Ray Vaughan died at the age of 35 in 1990.

Both brothers grew up near Kiest Park in Oak Cliff.

Jimmie Vaughan is expected to appear at the 4 p.m. dedication, according to a press release from the city.

In 2018, Kirby Warnock, a filmmaker who was working on a documentary about the Vaughan brothers, helped raise $68,000 for the artwork, which also required $74,000 in bond money. Titled We Are Music and Music Is Us, the large outdoor sculpture features steel-cut images of the music legends, as well as lyrics to their well-known song, “Tick Tock.”

The 10-foot monument, designed by Spanish artist Casto Solano, was unveiled last year.
