I'm now aware that MAD magazine stopped being sold at newstands.
I was searching for it for 2 or 3 months and wondered what happened.
Then I found out I could subscribe, and I did.

But it's a bit sad after 67 years...

Got the Hot Rats book today and read it in about an hour and a half. I really enjoyed Bill Gubbins' remembrances on meeting Frank and what led to his being exclusive photographer during the recording and staying at the Zappa's place while this was going on. Ahmet seemed to interrupt him a couple times while he was in the middle of a story, which could have led to something of interest. I guess he wanted him to get to the point, but I enjoyed Bill's stories. Lots of amazing photos and it's extraordinary how these went unseen and were in such great condition (he finally put them in a safety deposit box) for so many years. As much as I'd like to get the 50th anniversary Hot Rats release, this is something I can afford. Supposedly, the new Alex Winter doc will have a coffee table book to coincide with the film's release. May have to dig in for that....after I buy the movie...and there best be lots of special features on it! Thank you and good night.

Quote:
At loose ends and in your 50s, what better way to pass the time than to sail around the world? The journey took three years and covered 46,000 miles; Slocum was chased by pirates, survived major storms, suffered hallucinations. But he made it. He was the first to do it alone. Then he wrote this marvelous, salty book. In 1909, he put to sea again. This time, he disappeared.

Setting aside 3 weeks for this 1000+ page biography of this maligned and much misunderstood military general and 18th President of the U.S.

April ends my 6 months of non-fiction & begins my next 6 months of fiction(April-September)

I passed last night...so returning to the regularly scheduled program...

Back to The Ascendant series, Transcendent...

...It's got competition from this new one though... new frequency bands mean new antennas, (simple wire of different lengths, but now height is becoming important).

There's a bunch of stuff that matters that I don't know...

Methinks he must've uploaded his consciousness unto Suri or something similar before he shuffled off this mortal coil. Now baddy is one with the digital metaverse.

('course I'm thinkin' The Torture Never Stops exactly, by a few lines in)

Koren awakened,
to find himself in a dark chamber,
lit only by blood red torches.

He almost gagged on the stench of sulfur,
and brimstone.

On a stone bench in the center of the chamber,
sat a thin, emaciated figure,
clothed in a robe that hung in tatters around it's bony frame.

The grey, desiccated skin stretched tight,
over the rotted flesh within,

Sores oozed openly,
running down and soaking the filthy robe,
but the figure paid no mind to the physical discomfort,
of the ancient body it inhabited.

For that body was no more than a vessel to contain it's presence within the world of the real;
an anchor, holding it's tenuous connection to the underworld.

Even after all the centuries of restless striving and longing,
the Demon had not been able to strengthen and widen that connection.

For all it's incredible power,
it had failed to open a door wide enough,
for it's demon brethren to follow it into the real world.

Just finished the above, and started the below. :)

Oh, fuken A+ on Passages above(:

There was about a 2 year gap before the below Book 3 came out, and it's a rich and complex story, so I probably should do 1 & 2 again...but I'll put that off and just do 3. :)

John Scalzi's great, recommend the "Old Man's War" series for a starter :)

Below is different as it's about the massively powerful GOOD Emperor, pitched against nature.

Humanity spread across the galaxy connected by wormholes, and interdependent for resources...some, but not many places you can live on the surface, and some as small as mining colonies on asteroids, and billions of people in between...and all interdependent on one another for survival....which is fine until the wormholes start shifting and worlds are getting cut off...and the Emporor trying to figure out how to get as many worlds as self sufficient as she can, or evacuate...and of course, lol, there's not enough time

here's a blurb...

he Last Emperox is the thrilling conclusion to the award-winning, New York Times and USA Today bestselling Interdependency series, an epic space opera adventure from Hugo Award-winning author John Scalzi.

The collapse of The Flow, the interstellar pathway between the planets of the Interdependency, has accelerated. Entire star systems―and billions of people―are becoming cut off from the rest of human civilization. This collapse was foretold through scientific prediction . . . and yet, even as the evidence is obvious and insurmountable, many still try to rationalize, delay and profit from, these final days of one of the greatest empires humanity has ever known.

Emperox Grayland II has finally wrested control of her empire from those who oppose her and who deny the reality of this collapse. But “control” is a slippery thing, and even as Grayland strives to save as many of her people form impoverished isolation, the forces opposing her rule will make a final, desperate push to topple her from her throne and power, by any means necessary. Grayland and her thinning list of allies must use every tool at their disposal to save themselves, and all of humanity. And yet it may not be enough.

I'm starting it. Hope it's good

Dean Cole's so far trilogy (I don't know if it ends yet), does not have deep characters, complex plot, nor anything else of redeeming social value...

...it's just fun :)

Actually i am to lazy to read but i listen to Homers Iliad as audiobook on librivox. It consists of 24 chapters, each around one hour long. I have to listen to all of them repeatedly to understand them. I am actually busy with chapter no. 21.

a bit of nostalgia for the old folks...

Image

ESP communication between twins is used on deep space missions to keep ships in touch with Earth, (radio delays become a problem).

Because of accelleration of ships, the earthbound twin gets old, while his sibling barely ages.
