Very nice setlist!

I haven't been here in awhile, busy, life gets in the way.
However, I'm only 50 miles from Hampton Beach and I have a ticket to Dweezils 50th Birthday show tonight.
It got a write-up in the local media:

https://www.fosters.com/news/20190904/d ... ino-sept-5

I've been to most of his local Boston and NH shows since 2006, and I've met and chatted with him and the band likely a dozen times
It's nice that he normally does an autograph session after the show, depending on the venue.
I saw him as recently as last November at The Flying Monkey in Plymouth NH. Awesome show.
Anyway, since it's his birthday, I figured I'd give him something nice, so I went to my Zippo collection and pulled a very special Zippo out of a display case on my wall, one which I had laser engraved back in 2011.

I hope he likes it.

Happy Birthday to Dweezil Zappa and ‘Hot Rats’
Posted on September 5, 2019 by Scott Hopkins
https://www.musicfestnews.com/2019/09/happy-birthday-to-dweezil-zappa-and-hot-rats/

Two important events occurred in Frank Zappa’s world 50 years ago. He released his first solo album, Hot Rats, after four albums with The Mothers of Invention. And Frank and Gail Zappa welcomed Ian Donald Calvin Euclid Zappa to the world September 5. We know him as Dweezil, and we thank him daily for keeping the vibrancy of his father’s music alive. There are many great tribute bands and even a hologram tour, but nobody gets to the heart of the matter more closely than Dweezil. Anyone who has cried hearing him play “Inca Roads” will concur.

Dweezil and his band are two shows into their North American tour, including tonight’s birthday show at the Hampton Beach Casino Ballroom in New Hampshire. The tour runs up and down the East Coast, then to the Midwest, and concludes with several dates in western Canada.

Dweezil then joins the Experience Hendrix tour for October run before taking his band to Europe for seven shows. These include the songs from Hot Rats in sequence, in the same way that he celebrated the 40th anniversary of One Size Fits All in 2016, plus lots of other great material from all over Frank’s catalog.

The greatest compliment you could pay to the band Dweezil has assembled is this: Frank would have LOVED performing with them!

Thank you, Dweezil Zappa, for all that you do. Those of us who were fortunate enough to see Frank live know, and those who weren’t get to have the next-best “approximate” experience!

Happy 50th Birthday Dweezil Zappa (Watch “Zoot Allures/Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” Live ’18)

Happy 50th birthday today to Dweezil Zappa who was born on 9/5/69. Carrying the torch of a music legend’s legacy would be a complex job for anyone, but Zappa though has taken on his father’s musical legacy with a headfirst commitment to ensure his enormous catalogue is discovered by a new generation and ultimately, not forgotten. Dweezil’s last named Frank Zappa tribute tour is not simply a tribute to the music of his father, but an effort to share his father’s work and spark new interest with each tour. This time due to legal reasons its called “50 Years of Frank: Dweezil Zappa Plays Whatever the F@%k He Wants—the Cease and Desist Tour.” Watch Zappa and his band perform “Zoot Allures” and “Don’t Eat The Yellow Snow” live on 10/24/18..

It was a great show last night at Hampton Beach, the set list was nearly identical to the one posted above.
They were very light on merch, with only three shirt designs, some CD's and posters. No hats, pins, decals or other small trinkets.
Also, they did NOT do an autograph session afterwards, where I was hoping to give the above Zippo to Dweezil in person.
I did get to speak with Kurt Morgan for about 10 minutes before the show, I didn't know he was a local boy, originally from RI and went to school at UNH. I showed him the Zippo and he thought it was really cool, but I don't think he knew they weren't doing an autograph session, or he likely would have told me.
However, I did get a chance to meet up with Cian Coey after the show and asked her to pass it along to Dweezil, so I'm pretty sure he got it, but I don't have any photos to prove it.

Saw the Buffalo show(night #2). Same set as night one, also. The Hot Rats set was awesome - Scheila steals the show during Gumbo Variations as one would expect. Phyniox intro/outro was a good choice .2nd set highlight was the YAWYI suite. Brown Moses was great too. Could have done w/out Reeny Ra, total filler trk, there's a reason why Frank never did anything more than rehearse it. :|

Anyone know what the "mystery riff" in Bamboozled was? I know I've heard it. It's where the song speeds up and 'Owner Of A Lonely Heart' was inserted.
Also was there a 30 min intermission in NH after the 45 min Hot Rats set, same as Buffalo? That was my only complaint, having an intermission. Dweezil even said on mic that it was the venue's(Asbury Hall) policy. I don't believe that to be true, I've seen several shows in that venue. I think the venue wanted the show to end between 10:00-10:30, and with a 7:45 start time, the band more or less had to take a break with the setlist time. If doors would have been @ 7:00 with an 8:15ish start time instead of 6:30 doors, there would have been no need for an intermission. Sorry to rant, the break after 45 min was just a buzz kill.

This^

What I don't like about the Hampton Beach venue (other than the crappy acoustics) is the stage is too small, they're so cramped together I can never see the drummer or keyboardist. It was a much better fan experience when I saw them at The Flying Monkey, that's a real theater, nice big stage, seats on a slope, no obstructed views, and far better acoustics.

Has anyone, anywhere, done a detailed review on the Hot Rats performance yet?

What's there to say? They play it in order, note for note except for the solos. Scheila basically tore heads off on Gumbo Variations, which is the only tune really stretched out solo-wise. DZ did a great job soloing on that one too along w/ Willie The Pimp of course.
Honestly I was hoping the guitar tech/roadie who has popped out and guested in the last few yrs singing random/obscure covers would have sang Willie. Cian handled it OK, but the song just wasn't meant to be sang by a female.
The highlights of the Hot Rats set for me was Little Umbrellas w/ Kurt playing the mini-acoustic bass, and It Must Be A Camel, which is such a great underrated song, as Dweezil sort of mentioned before playing it. Some bonus tracks from that era could/should have been included - Lil' Clanton Shuffle, Sharleena(LE version), 20 Small Cigars(counts as Hot Rat sessions), & the yet to be officially released Twinkletitz.

If I had to vote something out of set 2, I'd say they could cut What Kind Of Girl/Bwana Dik. Groupie routine bs just seemed kind of forced, & through the motions. So much more better material with multiple singers they could have covered in that 10-15 minutes.

As anyone who owns Lost Episodes knows Willie The Pimp is a story developed from a woman's narrative of a life experience she and her friends developed into a fantasy, it probably was always meant to be sung by a woman...

The full arrangements as on the album?

I believe they’re called madams. Maybe they should re-write the lyrics to suit a female vocalist.

I’m a busty madam with a boutonnière
I line up all my girls and the boys they stare
I got the finest ladies and they can’t be beat
No need to stay at home and massage your meat
