Well, the Lindy Opera House was on Wilshire Blvd. (I looked it up), so probably close.

I saw Billy Mundi, when he was in the band Rhinoceros. As Billy sat behind his drum kit, he did
a few "snorks" into his mic and smiled. The band was pretty decent. They were opening for Vanilla
Fudge. The Fudge had just released the "Near The Beginning" album. I'm guessing this was the summer of 1969.

LOL! Amazingly, I didn't hear that. I had front row seats and the Fudge were
extremely LOUD. I was impressed with Rhinoceros and bought their debut LP the next day.

You know that was a Mothers reference, right? I believe it is somewhere in the liner notes of the YCDTOSA series, but I can't pin it down. Anyone?

I remember Frank mentioning this once during a Larry King radio interview too when he was talking to a caller who may have been at that show. The crowd was shouting “You’se guys stink, bring on the Fudge” at the Mothers who were opening for the Vanilla Fudge.

well remembered lads

You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore Volume 1

Liner notes for track 6, disc 2, Oh No

The exact recording date of these selections is not known, but can be placed roughly in the same month as The Bronx concert*. The audience at this show (in a dance hall) also seemed to prefer the dynamic stylings of The Vanilla Fudge. (At another concert on Long Island some members of the audience were actually chanting "Youse guys stink... bring on The Fudge....")

*Liner notes for track 1, disc 2, Plastic People

The spring tour of 1969 was a bus tour. It was cold and miserable. Many of the venues we were performing in were small and "unfashionable." This rare recording finds The Mothers playing a bar in The Bronx**, for an audience the probably would have preferred The Vanilla Fudge.

** Thursday, February the 13th, 1969 at The Factory, Bronx, NY.

Ghost note: a number of publications allege the "bring on The Fudge" chanting happened on Saturday, March the 1st, 1969 at the Westbury Music Fair, Westbury, NY. Where The Mothers subbed for Sly & The Family Stone at the last minute, opening for The Vanilla Fudge.....

PS: from Wiki Jawaka

Matt Groening asked FZ in The Mother Of All Interviews (Part 2) about the origin of the line:
I wanna hear 'Caravan' with a drum solo!

FZ "
When we worked at a gig in El Monte some drunken buffoon in the audience requested it: "I wanna hear 'Caravan' with a drum solo! There are certain things you remember from your career, like that line. When we worked at this music fair out in Long Island, we were the opening act for the Vanilla Fudge. 1968, I think it was. I remember this one guy out in the audience "You guys stink! Bring on The Fudge!'

Great photo of Billy that is clearly from the same photo 'session' that is on the inside gatefold of Burnt Weeny Sandwich.
Same clothes, same kit and you can just about see a drum to Billy's left that you can see fully in the 'aerial' photo of the whole band.

I always wondered whether that was onstage at the Albert Hall. Certainly looks like that time in '67 what with considering how short Ian Underwood's hair is.
I guess it could be anywhere but I like to think that it was the Albert Hall

You are correct; that "aerial" photo is from the RAH.
