Apparently the piano player thought the song needed more whiteness. And I'm not referring to his choice of keys on the piano. He's playing the "dinner jazz" version. At least he didn't try to copy Duke.

These midi files are really cheesy, but they do come in handy if you get stuck figuring out a pesky section of a song. The FZ midi files are still widely available, and can really help with the more complicated melodies and such.

Did Frank or George ever mention who did what, concerning their collaboration on this song?

Not that I'm aware of, but it sounds to me like Duke wrote the music, including the vocal melody, and FZ wrote the lyrics. The arrangement was most likely both of 'em. I could be totally wrong but..

That's as good a guess as any, considering that it would've been an uncommonly conventional chord progression for Frank (especially at the time), whereas it's right up George's alley. Thanks!

I thought in the meantime it was clear that Frank only wrote the lyrics. Uncle Remus was part of a demo Frank produced for George Duke during the Grand Wazoo sessions in 1972. That is why it has Erroneous and Aynsley Dunbar on it. I think it was an instrumental in the beginning.

Oh, yeah -- I completely forgot about that from George's interview on the ZappaCast. Well, that pretty much solves that, I guess!
