Hailed by critics and fans alike as the 'Guitar Event Of The Year,' the multi-artist celebration known as the Experience Hendrix Tour is set to return in 2016. These special concert performances present legendary artists who join together to pay homage to Jimi Hendrix. This next edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour will encompass twenty seven performances this coming February and March, stopping in more than two dozen cities along the east coast, midwest and southern states. Now in its second decade, the tour celebrates the musical genius of Jimi Hendrix by bringing together a diverse array of extraordinary musicians, ranging from blues legend Buddy Guy to Black Label Society and former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Zakk Wylde, as well as Jonny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa and many others. Billy Cox, bassist for both the Jimi Hendrix Experience and Band of Gypsys, anchors a rhythm section that provides the foundation for exciting renditions of such signature Hendrix favorites as "Purple Haze" and "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)".

this is the type of situation the DZ excels at. interesting the mild hypocrisy of playing hendrix music when the ZFT is adamant about others playing franks music. As i recall a DZ quote that others can't play Franks music.

That's a very good point.

I guess since the Hendrix estate is behind these concerts anybody who signs on obviously has their blessing.

These Experience Hendrix tours have always been short and concentrated on a geographic area of the US.

Seems like the talent is diminishing for these tours. KWS and Jonny Lang as the main attractions? I saw Experience Hendrix maybe five years ago and Living Colour was the house band plus Steve Vai was there along with Lang, Shepherd,Keb Mo & others.

Looked back and saw Eric Johnson on the bill as well. Don't know why he's listed below Dweezil. That doesn't make sense.

It's not enough to know what notes to play, you have to know why the notes need to be played.

Shouldn't all of these musicians be working on their own projects instead of trying to copy something that's already been done?

That would be my suggestion. Integrity and authenticity are important to me.

It will change in the future, when they realize that there is money to be made here, and it has to be done while things are "hot". I do think that the ZFT is more concerned with over saturating the market than anything else, but there are many of these out there, and they are not in America, is the only problem.

As I have mentioned before, if the ZFT wants to get more attention to their catalogue and Frank's own symphonic and orchestral works, they will open things up ... but I'm not sure they are getting enough requests for anything beyond the well known pieces and the rock pieces ... thus keeping a tight leash on it, might make sense. Besides, the Roxy fans, will never go for the orchestral stuff, I don't think!

I went to the Chicago show a few weeks ago. In fact, Dweezil played his 3 songs exactly like Jimi played them. He was the only act that did that. Most of them took great liberties with the material. One can debate whether that was the right approach or not. I subsequently read an interview with Dweezil where he said he intentionally played the songs note-for-note like Jimi did. Even the section where he was paired with Ana Popovic was played true to the original, except for her solos. Dweezil went on 1st, exactly on time for the show. Which meant that everyone was still shuffling around getting seated. Most people didn't even seem to recognize him.

Overall, the show was pretty lame. Compared to the 3 other shows I attended in the past, this one seemed just about the players, not JH. And if anyone ever sees me at any show involving Zak Wilde, just shoot me right on the spot. That was some terrible shit.

About the review I expected . It's a shame that this tour has to feature such horrible, showboating cheese-meisters. I could name about 10 guitarists that could make this an awesome tour, but there'd be no commercial potential, and the Hendrix Estate is all about big money.
Yeah, fuck Zakk Wylde. I remember seeing him butcher The Star Spangled Banner on Ozzy's No More Tears tour 25 ys ago, and at that point I was done with him.

I'm going to see the Generation Axe Tour on Saturday. Zakk is the player I'm least interested in seeing but I figure I'll enjoy it for what it is.

The quote in this post is not from me. must be an editing error by Ronnie, I kind of agree with the Wilde review, like i actually said this hendrix format is where DZ excels, that said, he uses a complex electronic enchantments to his guitar and amp to accomplish his hendrix sound. Pretty much NO ONE can use Jimi's guitar and amp set up and do what he did.

Don't Be Stupid Unless You Want To

To my knowledge, I've never heard ZW's music before. I was somewhat curious about his performance since there's lots of publicity about him. I had an open mind. I could not find any redeeming aspect of his set. It consisted of coming out to the audience, straddling the monitors for 5 minutes at a time, playing deedly-deedly-deedly and other rock cliche's over and over again, with his head bobbing up and down while grimacing and gritting his teeth, etc etc.

Good god it was miserable.

You can probably tell I didn't like it. Gotta give him props though, it looked to me like I was the only audience member not satisfied with his playing. They loved him!

A little off topic but what ever happened to Jake E Lee? Bark at the Moon and The Ultimate Sin are two of my favorite Ozzy albums (along with the Randy Rhodes stuff).
