I read an article a couple of days ago about the new revised quotas. I'm not going to go far into the fact that I think it's obscene that we kill animals that only live on fish because we think they're eating too many and therefore not allowing people (not me personally, obviously) to eat as many fish as we bloody well want to when we have choices NOT involving slaughtering the rightful beneficiaries of the fish.

The part that I found so twisted was that it's illegal to kill a seal while it has a white coat but you can club the little thing to death in front of its mother when it's 2 weeks old, just 'cause its coat has changed colour.

Who was the twisted piece of shit that dreamed up this idea? If it was a absolute unavoidable certainty that your child was going to be clubbed to death in front of you, would you rather it was when it was just born, or five years old?

Stupid question - or possibly not. Given a CHOICE in the matter the mother might actually prefer her pup to be killed while still largely unaware of what's going on and before she had bonded with it if it were an absolute certainty.

I can't answer that question, and couldn't even if I had a child, but someone apparently decided to make the law and must have thought it was a good idea and I guess others must have agreed or it would not have been passed!

:'(

I've never seen a seal coat in my life. What part of the world still wears them? :-/

(I know we weren't talking about killing them for fur here, but since we're talking about clubbing seals it seemed a good time to ask.)

Holy shit I had no idea the seal hunt was so huge! What they hell do they use them for? Is the meat used? the fat? that is pretty crazy.

One thing has to be said however...

The economy of people living out nearby depends a great deal about fishery and the seals are a big threat to some species, specially cod-fish. And the polulation of seals, according to some numbers I've read, has tripled in a rather short period of time.

Again, a question of balance. But to kill them only for the fur ? No meat ? No other use ?
