Zappa.com

A few weeks ago, Billboard gave copies of hundreds of back issues of their magazine to google books (unfortunately, not a complete issue history). And for the past few weeks I've been going through many of these back issues online and I found THOUSANDS of concert boxscores, including a variety of other artists dating back to 1976.

However, this thread is for Frank Zappa boxscores. There are a few things to keep in mind before reading. For one, there are several listings where the average ticket price is actually lower than the ticket prices listed. This means that an x amount of tix were given away...and hence this lowers the average ticket price. This is quite common for many concerts. And remember, capacities reflect how many tickets were put on sale and not necessarily the overall capacity of the venue.

It's interesting to note that many of these shows were in the gross/attendance range in which I thought they'd be after I started studying FZ's tour history years ago (and the recent ZPZ boxscores helped). But FINALLY, we now have confirmation. However, there were a few big surprises.

In the near future, if Billboard doesn't give more of their back issues to google books, I plan to track down more boxscores at a local book/magazine emporium that specializes in extensive back issue collections. And of course, I'll add them here...

Very cool. I see a few shows I was at, including the NYC and Hartford shows of 1980. Thanks for posting these.

It's amazing to note and consider all that it takes to put on such a great performance, with so many people involved and yet charge so little, even considering inflation of course. Here is someone who is dedicated to the music, with everthing else is thrown in for good measure of course

I vaguely remember an article in a german magazine in the late 80s where they compared production costs for acts of that time during their tours in Germany.

Production costs for one Pink Floyd show were 2.000.000 Deutsche Mark, while for one FZ '88 tour show it were 60.000 DM.

The only major shock above is San Diego's statistics from 1980. You see, during ZPZ's first year or two, they were matching FZ's demand on his final tours in the '80s. And when ZPZ played San Diego for the first time in 2007, the drew about half of what FZ did there in 1980, when they should've done twice that. So for years I thought FZ's San Diego demand was about half of what it actually was...
