I was curious about Zappa (and "weird" music in general) when I was a kid in the 80's but had to wait through several frustrating years when almost all of his albums were out of print. (My uncle had two of his albums Waka/Jawaka and Overnite Sensation.) So I started collecting his 60's albums when the Ryko CDs started coming out, and then I bought YCDTOSA 1 which made me a fan of his later bands. After that it was a long quest to collect more music and info.

My first show was The Petit Wazoo Orchestra tour , Syracuse NY 10-28-72. My brother took me as a birthday present. The band was set up like a 1940’s big band. They were all sitting behind “FZ stands” with Frank conducting. One of the 5 LP’s I owned at the time was “Chungas Revenge” (still love it!) so the show was not what I was expecting. Franks guitar playing won me over and I count myself very lucky to have seen this tour as there was never another one like it. The last show I saw was the St Patrick's Day Show in Binghamton NY, 03-17-88. I caught this one just by chance as I was passing through town and scored some tickets. My favorite show, of the five I saw was at Ithaca College’s Ben Light Gym, Ithaca NY 11-16-74. Ruth was an alumni of IC and it was a special show for that reason alone. I think the whole band hung around the town that day before the show though I missed them. Frank was in rare form. I have always preferred the bands before he started adding a second guitar. I would give my right arm for a copy of this show but a far as I can tell no boot is available of it. ZG

I looked for your show on the Zappateers site (I have found their information to be practically flawless), and I cannot find this show although they were in NY at the time and no show is listed (normally I find some mention there). But that would have been your best shot at an actual recording of that show, on the other hand it looks like they have good recordings for 11/15 and 11/16, there are other resources for rare information and recordings...good luck...

FZ did play in Syracuse 10-28-72 with the Petit Wazoo and Ithaca 11-16-74 with the YCDTOSA 2/OSFA band. No recording circulates of either show.

I have looked high and low and I don't think recordings were made of these show...unless they are in the vault! I have poor recordings of 2 Petit Wazoo shows later in the tour and have good recordings of the night before and the night after the Ithaca show (thanks to the Zappateers!) ...but it's great to get a show that you saw in person. In 72 the Grand Wazoo band (Hot Rats Orch) started the year and toward the end of the summer it was striped down to the Petit band. I think keeping that group together on a tour was just to much..a lot of them were not "rock musicians" who were use to touring. That's what I assume at least. ZG

This is a very nice article from a writer who travelled with FZ and the band through Buffalo, Ithaca and Philadelphia in November 1974. I'd like it if a recording was available of their next show after Philadelphia when they played Columbus, OH (my hometown).

1971, Milwaukee Auditorium, opening acts were Head Hands & Feet (Rory Gallagher) and Fleetwood Mac.
Rory rocked the blues, Fellatwood Mac took for......ever setting up. Zappa came on late with Flo & Eddie.

I was 15 and stoned. I don't remember the setlist well, but I think they played some of Burnt Weenie Sandwich, which to this day ranks as a favorite as well as a bunch of the goofy Fillmore type stuff with Flo & Eddie. Latex Solar Beef? Tears Began To Fall?

I remember Marc Volman putting on a pink rabbit head and dancing around periodically. Call Any Vegetable?

I recall the black Les Paul and I think there were 2 drummers. Ian Underwood struck me as a masterful reed player.

But it was listening to FZ wail on the guitar that I decided I liked him best of all - better than the recently passed Hendrix, better than Jimmy Page, better than Clapton, all deities in the pantheon of musical lands of the adolescent of the time. The music was dense, odd, funny and really different than the Dead or the Airplane (who had played the previous year at Poynette Game Farm). And the music was really interesting, it played tricks on you and demanded attention unlike so much of the formulaic monoblues derived that was plopular.

I had to leave early since my parents were picking me up, but I was hooked.

Next time 1972, same venue with Mahavishnu Orchestra...an amazing show, like McGlaughlin upped FZs playing. I think the setlist was mostly Overnight Sensation stuff, George Duke stood out. Maroon SG. Some Grand Wazoo tunes too. Underwood still playing excellent sax.

Next time was 1973 (?) Riverside Theatre, Milwaukee with Napolean Murphy Brock, just before the recording of the Mothers Day shows in Chicago. Another smoking set, but I missed Underwoods saxwork. Maroon SG.

Thereafter my FZ memory gets bleary: saw a tons of FZ shows in Portland, Oregon, Seattle and Eugene. Loved them.
