I was thinking, in the best Milton_Bradley tradition, about how many Zappa songs have an harmonica on it... I could think of Crew Slut (killer harmonica by the way), then San Ber'dino and now, as I type, In France.

Can you point memorable harmonica works and songs? Any particular Tull, Fritz, anyone? Any Beefheart, punknaynowned? Tillman, BBP?

More power to ya, Green Machine! Thanks for carrying on the "I Must Have More___________"idea.

For Tull, my vote is "To Be Sad Is a Mad Way To Be"

Don't forget "Flakes" during the Bob Dylan interlude.

Well it's only a tiny section but I love the dirty harmonica at the end of Call Any Vegetable - Ray Collins?
I also love the harmonica on Ah Feel Like Ahcid. also from that album Beefcake plays some pretty mean but also unusual harmonica at the end of Mirror Man. It always sounded very futuristic to me.
Brings back memories of lying in bed late at night stoned listening to side 1 of Strictly Personel.
As someone else mentioned Beefheart plays some great harmonica on CS and TSK too. Isn't there some on Booglarizer over that pumping bass line along with Beefheart's pig-like shrieking? I can't listen to my vinyl to check as I still need to get a replacement turntable
One of my favourite Tull songs is A Song for Jeffrey. Cornick plays some really groovy harmonica on this track showcased on the rock n roll circus from '68.
Outside of that there is of course this main man:

Thanks guys. Hey Dove, 'outside' (i.e. non-Zappa) references are welcome too!

Oops, not Tillman, that would be the guy from Ecology:

I meant Thielemans:

TOOTS is brilliant, try any Buffalo Norton, John Mayall, and the master, Paul Butterfield, and I suggest the live cd with his big band.

Make that Norton Buffalo. He lives in the same town as me so I've had the chance to rub shoulders with him at a few community events. Fabulous musician. I had always thought of him as kind of a blues guy but he can play anything. Nice guy too.

I rather like Stan Ridgway, particularly on live versions of "Factory". He's not massively versatile, but he's got lots of 'feeling'.

I already replied to Bravo's email but in case anybody was wondering Norton lives in Paradise, CA. I think he's the most famous resident now since Gary Burghoff moved although I've heard that Tom Selleck bought a ranch just outside of town.

Oh, I just remembered. Lazy Lester, another pretty famous harmonica player lives here too.

"Find Her Finer" album version has a bit of harmonica.

How can one ignore the guest harmonica in "Torture" on OZ, with that weird racist Stevie Wonder joke?

Beyond, FZ, well, STEVIE WONDER.

Also, one of my favorite uses of harmonica is Neil Young's "Ambulance Blues" on On the Beach.
