I have to do a dialogue paper that has Plato, Hume, Decartes, Freud and one other great thinker. I am going to put Frank at the table with these guys and was wondering if anyone could help. I need to know what Frank would say is worth KNOWING. I also need to know, if anyone is familiar with these guys, how Frank would react to their philosophies. I would appreciate any help I can get.

Thanks, Tricia

Hi presciouz,
I did something similar about a year ago. I have saved most of my essays, so I'll try to find some time to dig it up.
(I somehow manage to slip "Zappa-isms" into ALL of my classes! ;D)
Off the top of my head, I took some of the stuff from his book, the chapter All About Schmucks, where he talks about "if you end up with a shitty life because you listened to other people then you deseve it"...and I related it to existentialism and epistemic responsibility. Phew, that's a mouthful. Anyway, that might give you something to build from for now. I LOVED that Intro to Philosophy class. If a Philosophy degree was actually worth something, money-wise, I'd love to dive into that. Really thought-provoking, fascinating stuff. Too bad we can't get paid to think deep thoughts. ::) ;D

I can already hear Frank laughing at Plato's ideas concerning harmony of the spheres and music as education. It's an interesting thesis you got there, and thanks to my study, I may have some material on Hume and Plato you can use.
For a while I studied Freud as part of mythology class and as music from a psychological point of view. Freud had nothing of interest, regarding music or otherwise. (slipping in personal view of Freud)
My group found nothing whatsoever on Freud and music, which made me wonder he might be deaf. Do you have to include him in? I don't really look upon him as "great thinker".

Freud is fun to read, but for me, it's strictly as fiction. I like Jung and Vico much more.

You might want to start with Strunk & White.

lol.....My first thought was of Strunk & White, too. My second thought was that it was probably a typo.

Typo maybe, but what about the preposition?

You're right. I must have stopped reading after the misused article. My third thought: She's a dumbass.

I wrote a paper about Zappa's musical evolution for a non-fiction class. I got an A on it and the professor asked if he could use it as an example of that type of paper. That was nice.

I wrote a paper about The Doors when I was 12. The teacher thought it was so bad he made me re-write it. But hey, this was in Miami after all, he musta still had some hard feelings concerning the notorious "weenie" incident.

Haha well my Zappa paper went through a re-write and refocus. I wasn't bragging about my paper, just sharing Zappa paper writing examples.

I did an paper on the PMRC hearings for a political science class in the 1980s and took quotes from Porn Wars (it was before I got my Z-Pak).

I wonder whatever happened to my Z-Pac? :?

I wrote a long analysis on 10 Zappa compositions and on his influence on modern classical music and his innovations.

I still haven't gotten that back yet, otherwise I'd post i online. I was really proud of it.

I also did a paper on the PMRC issue, specifically about the movement to put mandatory warnings on record covers. It was for a Philosophy of Law class in college. I took a lot of my material from Jello Biafra's "No More Cocoons" spoken word LP. Can't remember if I used any Zappa quotes, though I was aware he was involved.

VCF - I see your paper has been posted online, I'll check that out a little later!

I gotta read this! What do you mean, get it back? Don't you have a copy?
Or are you waiting for the teachers 'corrections?'
