I think some of the fall 1980 shows were a bit "unstructured", and Frank and Vinnie's famous interplay during the guitar solos is MUCH better on the 78/79 tours.

Also, I didn't think too much of Frank's strange "singing/rapping" style like on "The Jazz Discharge Party Hats". Even though it on album is a techically astonishing achievement of Steve to subsequently play along with Frank's voice, it is indeed just a technical exercise, but not one of the most interesting musical pieces. Incidently, Frank never did this kind of "singing" since then. Or am I wrong there?

So, although the fall 1980 band certainly had its moments, I think more of it as a "bridge" toward the fabulous 81/82 band...

Well, I guess being a fan makes the early 1980 meterial worth listening anyway...
I have a boot, called You Are Phoenix What You Is (Phoenix, April 80), where almost the complete YAWYI album was done live prior to it`s studio recording. For a fan, it`s quite interesting (different tempos, Steve Vai missing...). But if you consider the fact, that from this period Frank almost never released stuff, it tells a story. Except for You Didn`t Try To Call Me and Love Of My Live on YCDTOSA 1 and 4, and of course, the beginning of Easy Meat on TTR, there is not a single cut released (or overdubbed) by himself. Compared to the huge vast material we got officially from 82, 84 and 88, that`s not much Am I right? Another acceptable show is the afore mentioned Rotterdam Ahoy-Show, right.
I`d like to see a double (or tripple?) CD from the Vault from the 1980 spring tour, maybe a sampler with the best results on it. How about you?

I have mailed the vaultmeister about the rotterdam 1980 show and he would dive into that one.
I was there and it was GREAT!!! The solo on Easy Meat is one of the most beautiful solo's Zappa ever made...but...never released!!!
Indeed the band played the "you are what you is" songs before they were released and I liked this versions so much that the "You are what you is" polished release disapointed me a little...a very little because it is such a wonderful album!!!!

I was really surprised to see how little the new fans know.

All I'm saying is that the '80 bands would have been better with the "percussoid". I forget why Ed took a leave of abscence that year. Anyone know, Frank's or Ed's decision?

Uhmmm . . . this thread devolved into an argument.

I just wanted to resurrect it to say that I saw both bands in 1980; once in the Spring with Logeman and twice in October with Vinnie. Both were great and neither had Ed Mann there. I would love to have heard Ed that year.

My favourite was the Vinnie band and, IMHO, that tour was the apex of he and FZ's interplay as evinced by the solo on Pick Me I'm Clean, which has the most creative drumming I've ever heard. However, I am very biased because I had a sort of "religious experience" on October 18, 1980 (the date of the 2 shows I saw in one day). From that day until the present, FZ was my Elvis.

I think Vinnie tried to get a pay raise before the European winter leg of the 1980 tour and got fired. Then he was rehired for the Fall leg. It must have sucked for David, but I read somewhere that FZ apologized profusely to him and paid him some extra cash because he felt bad for letting Vinnie back in the band.

VCF

Edit: Here's where I read about the Logeman chronicles:

http://www.united-mutations.com/l/david_logeman.htm
