Dirty Love<br><br>VCF<br><br>UPDATE: Although I ranked FZ's 50/50 solo #5, I REALLY like the FIRST NOTE of that solo (the crunch note with a different tone from the guitar on the rest of the solo).  I also REALLY like Ralph's drum fills at the end of each verse of 50/50, but they aren't really long enough to count as a solo.

Here are some more thoughts. First of all, I'm not a musician like many of you seem to be. The good news is according to 6string, that means I don't miss the big picture by focusing too much on my own instrument.<br><br>Slime Outro...This was almost my favorite. Why does it end so abruptly? Where can you get a recording of the rest of it as Zappa obviously kept playing?<br><br>50/50 I like the George and Ponty solo's better than Zappa's because they seem to mesh alot better with the other instruments. Zappa seems to be doing his own thing on this one, not particularly relating to what the other folks are playing until the very end. Don't get me wrong, I would give the guitar solo on this one an 8 on a scale of 10. I know 6string likes it because he is a speed freak. This is what it sounds like to me: take a damp cloth and rub it on glass until it squeeks. Then rub it back and forth as fast as you possibly can until it makes a "flight of the bumblebee" in squeeks. That's the 50/50 guitar solo.<br><br>Zombie and Dirty Love bring back strong memories of Frank playing in concert during that era.

On "Fifty-Fifty," Jean-Luc and George have spelled-out (and sounded) harmonic references fuctioning as context for their solos; as such their playing is defined by the accompianing chords, and they do not stray from the harmonic context.  <br><br>On FZ's solo, there are no accompianing chords; although the root functions for his solo (played by the bass) remain the same and the chords are implied by the listener's memory of what has gone before, there is no instrument actually playing chords that would box Zappa in harmonically. This procedure is the means to  obliterating the context and the semi-anarchic freedom he expresses in his solo is the end result.
