Thickest kelp beds ever!
Do people still surf there?
I think it's a fickle spot, right?

^^^Yes, it breaks 2 or 3 times a year at best isn't easy to get too and for some reason has fallen out of favor with the Big Wave surf community.

That's why you gotta keep the trees high and tight.

The Dixie Fire has been burning for two months. As of 9 September, it has burned a total of 953,000 acres. That's about 5% smaller than the state of Rhode Island.

Earlier this Summer, the Sugar Fire burned 105,000 acres. The Dixie Fire actually burned right up to the perimeter of the Sugar Fire; but since the Sugar Fire was already extinguished, the areas are being treated as separate incidents.

The north-western edge of the Dixie Fire - which is still burning - is sixty five miles away from the south-eastern edge of the Sugar Fire. Everything between those two points is toast.

At some point, numbers become meaningless...

That's a great and terrifying picture.

I guess before CNN you had to be there. Just pull up a chair and watch.

Indeed. Probably the most terrifying thing about that picture is the fact that within 24 hours the fire in the distance engulfed all the buildings you can see. The city's water system was destroyed in the earthquake, so the Fire Department was basically helpless.

But there are also plenty of terrifying-yet-oddly-humorous pictures as well.

This is Stanford University (about 30 miles south of the epicenter):

And this is Point Reyes Station (about 30 miles north):

A good friend of mine was in Santa Cruz when the Loma Prieta earthquake hit in 1989. After that, she moved to Joshua Tree. She was there for the Landers Quake in 1992. Then she moved to The Valley, and was there for the 1994 Northridge Earthquake.

If she was a geologist, she'd be in the Hall Of Fame...
