It wasn't meant to be that serious, but since you think you are a comedian ... good luck, because your reading ability and disseminating desire upon reading leaves a lot to be desired, and is the kind of crass and intelligence that FZ would not enjoy in any of his musicians that would not be dedicated enough to pay attention!

You're really showing your class! An intellectual for sure!

"It's weird to see what this guy is saying about Frank ... because i think he is going to hit a massive BRICK WALL that will hurt the film, and then it will become just vignettes that do nto connect to anything, but talk about rock'n'roll completely out of context with anything ... "

The quote is about what the guy said in the interview which is very high handed "director" talk in the movie business, which makes one think they are more qualified than YOU, to do this, and say anything of value, when in essence, he is not saying anything at all! Like you and I are too stupid to not understand anything that is being said, and we believe his bs. That's like folks saying that this will be 50 Shades of Gray ... and pretty soon, 50 shades of brown poopoo! Both you and I would like to see something nice ... and grand ... on the level of the Roxy movie ... not some cheap worthless crap that makes Frank and his music come off like idiotic rock music, which is already the way he is thought of here in Portland, by the Symphony!

ZFT got beat, must be livid.

Eat That Question—Frank Zappa in His Own Words / France, Germany (Director: Thorsten Schütte) — This entertaining encounter with the premier of sonic avant-garde is acidic, fun-poking, and full of rich and rare archival footage. This documentary bashes favorite Zappa targets and dashes a few myths about the man himself. World Premiere

This is the then-ZFT-authorised documentary that GZ discussed with Schütte at the Roundhouse in 2010. It's working title at that time was ZAPPED.

It will be interesting to see if there is any overlap with Winter's documentary in due course - or whether there are any moves to try and block it.

Seems like a huge cock-up from the ZFT. Bottom Line: Sure it is playing at the prestigious Sundance, but that might be the end of it. If there is no music license granted for a Blu-ray or whatever, that's all she wrote, right? At least as far as a quality doc goes.

Quality docs take up a very small space on the video shelf, don't they?

i know of quite a few "quality" docs.

quality is in the head of the beholder.
but yeah,

they're out there.

^^

My point was that there is a shit ton of disappointing docs. If you piled up all of the docs ever released, the pile where you keep the quality docs would be much smaller than the rest.

I dislike most biographies as well. I might enjoy reading 'em but in the end could never recommend 'em.

For me all it takes is one unforgivable bullshit moment, really. Robbie Robertson hogging the spotlight in The Last Waltz or whatever. Any doc that exists for the purpose of promoting a new product usually suffers. Quality docs are labors of love.

But, yeah, head of the beholder and all that.

Hard for old people to stay on topic for 2 years. Ain't it?

For what it's worth, my new favorite doc. Great capture of the southern metal scene, and a pretty good job describing what it's like to grow up and live here.

Yes. But this thread is about documentaries.

I can stay on topic if I want.

Any Buk doc which allows the presence of Bono lacks quality.

The new National Lampoon doc Drunk Stoned Brilliant Dead is very good. (available to stream on amazon) Doug Kenney getting some more long overdue recognition.

I would imagine that at this point, blocking anything, is counter productive to the whole ZPT thing. Any word is good word and means a couple more sales ... and I doubt that this will hurt anything, and in fact, it might show that Frank, while not a comedian, was actually a pretty good actor, too!

having read his biography and Miles' book ... the movie will not show anything that you and I are not already aware of. I kinda doubt it. What's he gonna say? That he had sex with 3 groupies while his wife took Polaroids? Give it a break!

Gotta move it over, to put together all those rush Bowie documentaries!

Do you know anything about the doc on Amazon now called "Frank Zappa: In His Own Words" due for a March release which is apparently a compilation of video interviews?

Not a lot. It appears to be another 'gray area' release, with nothing to do with Winter or Schütte. But who knows, till it comes out?

I'm guessing they are running low on funds, and not able to find any financing?

Film is not cheap, and not everyone has learned that video is getting so cheap as to allow for people to make crap and burn out things that are legitimate.

I'm guessing that the project does not have solid footing!
