I post at two forums that rotate around a specific musical following. This one, and the Cannibal Corpse forums. CC are, of course, a rather prominent death metal act, and out of maybe 25, 30 regular posters there I was rather shocked to find that 5 or 6 of them are big fans of FZ and the music he created during his life. And so I decided to see how many folks here appreciate Death metal?

My personal favourite DM bands are Nile, Cryptopsy and Necrophagist. All three bands possessing insane levels of technicality as well as a superb sense of musicality, blending beauty into the brutal nature of the genre.

Your thoughts?

I wouldn't call Meshuggah death metal. More a sort of post thrash-death hybrid.

It's characterised by technical and often heavy, frantic riffing, prominent bass lines, growled vocals and technical guitar/bass solos.

Yes. Nu-metal distorts the un-informed's view of what Death metal is, often resulting in giving the genre a bad name. Nasty stuff. :-/

I used to be a big death metal fan in the early 90's and was part of the East Coast explosion back then. Had a blast and played out most every weekend.
I'm not really into these days. I still love the music, but the vox have gotten to be intolerable.

To each his own I suppose. I love the "menstrual fluid gargling" vocals that come from DM vocal greats such as Jaimey Bailey (Brodequin) and Matti Way (ex-Disgorge, ex-Cinerary, Liturgy)...

My band Bung has never took part in ANY of the abouve, I wont have it. I just kicked out our singer after 4 years b\c he started to do stupid shit that I wasnt into at all, its my fuckin band I am the Gene Simmons of Bung and I will put down the iron fist.

Valid points, but you cannot discriminate against all modern death metal.

As far as the gore/porn imagery, I agree. Cannibal Corpse do it well, and they did it with originality, being one of the first DM bands to take on that image... as for other good modern day death metal... Cryptopsy are, for me, at the very top of the stack. Great riffs, loud as fuck bass that sounds like a dinosaur plodding up and down, being amplified through an amp coated with treacle, Flo is one of the best drummers in the world, and Lord Worm is both a phenominal vocalist and his lyrics are superbly inspired. Other MOdern DM bands I really like include Brodequin, Disgorge (US), Nile and Necrophagist. All superb stuff.

Napalm Death are going strong too.
