Is there life floating in the clouds of Venus?

By Jonathan Amos BBC Science Correspondent

It's an extraordinary possibility - the idea that living organisms are floating in the clouds of Planet Venus.

But this is what astronomers are now considering after detecting a gas in the atmosphere they can't explain.

That gas is phosphine - a molecule made up of one phosphorus atom and three hydrogen atoms.

On Earth, phosphine is associated with life, with microbes living in the guts of animals like penguins, or in oxygen-poor environments such as swamps.

For sure, you can make it industrially, but there are no factories on Venus; and there are certainly no penguins.

So why is this gas there, 50km up from the planet's surface? Prof Jane Greaves, from Cardiff University, UK and colleagues are asking just this question.

They've published a paper in the journal Nature Astronomy detailing their observations of phosphine at Venus, as well as the investigations they've made to try to show this molecule could have a natural, non-biological origin.

But for the moment, they're stumped - as they tell the BBC's Sky At Night programme, which has talked at length to the team. You can see the show on BBC Four tonight (Monday) at 22:30 BST.

Given everything we know about Venus and the conditions that exist there, no-one has yet been able to describe an abiotic pathway to phosphine, not in the quantities that have been detected. This means a life source deserves consideration.

"Through my whole career I have been interested in the search for life elsewhere in the Universe, so I'm just blown away that this is even possible," Prof Greaves said. "But, yes, we are genuinely encouraging other people to tell us what we might have missed. Our paper and data are open access; this is how science works."

What exactly has the team detected?

Prof Greaves' team first identified phosphine at Venus using the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope in Hawaii, and then confirmed its presence using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array in Chile.

Phosphine has a distinctive "absorption line" that these radio telescopes discern at a wavelength of about 1mm. The gas is observed at mid-latitudes on the planet at roughly 50-60km in altitude. The concentration is small - making up only 10-20 parts in every billion atmospheric molecules - but in this context, that's a lot.

Why is this so interesting?

Venus is not at the top of the list when thinking of life elsewhere in our Solar System. Compared to Earth, it's a hellhole. With 96% of the atmosphere made up of carbon dioxide, it has experienced a runaway greenhouse effect. Surface temperatures are like those in a pizza oven - over 400C.

Space probes that have landed on the planet have survived just minutes before breaking down. And yet, go 50km up and it's actually "shirtsleeves conditions". So, if there really is life on Venus, this is exactly where we might expect to find it.

Image

Why should we be sceptical?

The clouds. They're thick and they're mainly composed (75-95%) of sulphuric acid, which is catastrophic for the cellular structures that make up living organisms on Earth.

Dr William Bains, who's affiliated to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US, is a biochemist on the team. He's studied various combinations of different compounds expected to be on Venus; he's examined whether volcanoes, lightning and even meteorites could play a role in making PH3 - and all of the chemical reactions he's investigated, he says, are 10,000 times too weak to produce the amount of phosphine that's been observed.

To survive the sulphuric acid, Dr Bains believes, airborne Venusian microbes would either have to use some unknown, radically different biochemistry, or evolve a kind of armour.

"In principle, a more water-loving life could hide itself away inside a protective shell of some sorts inside the sulphuric acid droplets," he told Sky At Night. "We're talking bacteria surrounding themselves by something tougher than Teflon and completely sealing themselves in. But then how do they eat? How do they exchange gases? It's a real paradox."

Image

What's been the reaction?

Cautious and intrigued. The team emphatically is not claiming to have found life on Venus, only that the idea needs to be further explored as scientists also hunt down any overlooked geological or abiotic chemical pathways to phosphine.

Oxford University's Dr Colin Wilson worked on the European Space Agency's Venus Express probe (2006-2014), and is a leading figure in the development of a new mission concept called EnVision. He said Prof Greaves' observations would spur a new wave of research at the planet.

"It's really exciting and will lead to new discoveries - even if the original phosphine detection were to turn out to be a spectroscopic misinterpretation, which I don't think it will. I think that life in Venus' clouds today is so unlikely that we'll find other chemical pathways of creating phosphine in the atmosphere - but we'll discover lots of interesting things about Venus in this search," he told BBC News.

Prof Lewis Dartnell from the University of Westminster is similarly cautious. He's an astrobiologist - someone who studies the possibilities of life beyond Earth. He thinks Mars or the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are a better bet to find life.

"If life can survive in the upper cloud-decks of Venus - that's very illuminating, because it means maybe life is very common in our galaxy as a whole. Maybe life doesn't need very Earth-like planets and could survive on other, hellishly-hot, Venus-like planets across the Milky Way."

Image

How can the question be resolved?

By sending a probe to investigate specifically the atmosphere of Venus.

The US space agency (Nasa) asked scientists recently to sketch the design for a potential flagship mission in the 2030s. Flagships are the most capable - and most expensive - ventures undertaken by Nasa. This particular concept proposed an aerobot, or instrumented balloon, to travel through the clouds of Venus.

"The Russians did this with their Vega balloon (in 1985)," said team-member Prof Sara Seager from MIT. "It was coated with Teflon to protect it from sulphuric acid and floated around for a couple of days, making measurements.

"We could definitely go make some in-situ measurements. We could concentrate the droplets and measure their properties. We could even bring a microscope along and try to look for life itself."

'It’s not a question of belief': the film examining government UFO records

The Phenomenon studies the history of UFO claims from the 1940s to this summer’s revelation of a Department of Defense investigation into military sightings

Image

The question of unexplained phenomena and Unidentified Flying Objects have long fascinated the public, as the subject of feverish American news coverage in the years post-second world war and too many films and investigative documentaries to count, all landing on speculation without certainty. But the frenetic, oxygen-sucking rollercoaster of headlines in the Trump administration has overshadowed a cascade of strange evidence released by the government in recent years: in 2017, the New York Times revealed the existence of a shadowy, partly classified government program, the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), which investigated UFO reports from deep within the Pentagon.

This is the grounding fact presented in The Phenomenon, a documentary from longtime UFO enthusiast James Fox which updates longstanding extraterrestrial theories with recent government regulations. Though the government said at the time that the program, which started in 2007 largely at the request of then Senate majority leader Harry Reid, was shuttered due to lack of funding in 2012, the New York Times later confirmed its continued existence as a renamed Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force, within the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The barrage of bureaucratic titles couched a startling revelation: for more than a decade, the Pentagon had conducted classified briefings for congressional committees, aerospace company executives and other government officials, based on sightings, video footage, and radar logs by military pilots of “unexplained aerial phenomena” which seemed to transcend existing flight technology – no visible engine at 30,000ft, hypersonic speed.

bject is unidentified or unexplained doesn’t mean it’s extraterrestrial; some of the unexplained incidents could be attributed to bugs in display systems’ code, atmospheric effects, and neurological overload during high-speed flight as much if not more than extraterrestrial contact. But The Phenomenon, leaps from the confirmed existence of the government program to an earnest, at times breathless consideration of the existence of extraterrestrial encounters. “There’s clearly a preponderance of evidence from around the world that there are structured craft, physical craft, that are displaying flight characteristics that are so far beyond anything conventional,” Fox, who does not shy away from his belief in the otherworldly, told the Guardian of the military reports. “I’m absolutely convinced that these objects are real.”

The Phenomenon, narrated by actor and voiceover staple Peter Coyote (a veteran of numerous Ken Burns’ projects) speaks to such high-ranking government officials as Reid, who left the Senate in 2017, and former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson, as well as longtime UFO researcher Jacques Vallee, who inspired the character of Lacombe in Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind. The film traces the relatively recent history of UFO fixation – the US military repeatedly investigated UFOs beginning in the late 1940s, as sightings of unidentified discs other incidents lit up mainstream news reports (Oregon farmers who photographed a supposed UFO in 1950 were featured in a Life magazine, for example). From 1947 until 1969, the air force investigated more than 12,000 UFO claims; though a 1952 study code-named Project Blue Book concluded that most of the sightings could be explained by stars, clouds, conventional aircraft or spy planes, 701 sightings remained unexplained.

The Phenomenon plumbs that unexplained terrain with years of first-person accounts, from an old interview with the late astronaut Gordon Cooper, who recalled his own brush with an unexplained object while flying fighters in Germany in 1951, to audio footage of former president Gerald Ford who, as a congressman from Michigan, desired greater transparency on UFO research. Fox combines vintage news interviews with children who reported sightings – in Zimbabwe in 1994, at an Australian school in the 1960s – with recent interviews of the subjects, who revisit their memories with a combination of bafflement, emotional clarity and confusion.

The renderings of these accounts can sometimes overshadow the trove of records unveiled in recent years by the Pentagon, including video footage released this year of military pilots wondering aloud, “Wow, what is that?” to “unidentified aerial phenomena” spotted by a plane’s camera in early 2015. (The Times spoke to five navy pilots about incidents with said phenomena off the coast of Virginia from 2014-2015, including a near-crash that triggered the filing of a safety incident report, though none of the pilots speculated on the objects’ provenance).

Huge, ancient cat glyph found in Peru's Nazca Lines

Image

Archaeologists from the Peruvian Ministry of Culture have announced the discovery of a 37-metre-long glyph of a feline in the Nazca Lines.

Officials last week undertook cleaning and conservation of the cat, which was barely discernible and almost completely erased, reported state news agency Andina.

The Nazca Lines are a group of large drawings, known as geoglyphs, etched into the desert sands of southern Peru, around 400 kilometres from the capital Lima.

"One of the things that continues to surprise, and that many ask, is how we still find new geoglyphs," said Johny Isla, the director of the Nazca Lines conservation mission at the Ministry of Culture, as quoted by euronews.

Image

"In fact, there are new ones and we will continue to find more," he said.

The geoglyphs are dispersed over an area spanning almost 1,000 square kilometres depicting people, animals and other figures, and were recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994.

They are thought to be between 1,500 and 2,000 years old, with some stretching 30m wide and more than 9km long.

While first discovered around a century ago, scientists and archaeologists have found geoglyphs with increasing frequency in recent years with the help of drones.

"This has improved a lot in recent years with the use of modern technology," Mr Isla said.

"Before we had aerial photographs or photographs from planes, but now we have photos that can be taken with drones at very low altitudes and that helps us a lot."

Researchers from Japan's Yamagata University announced 143 previously undiscovered Nazca Lines in November last year, including a fish, a two-headed snake, a bird, and humanoid figures.

Image

"There is still much work needed to be done in surveying the distribution of these geoglyphs," said a statement from the university at the time.

"In addition, the expansion of urban areas has brought damage to the lines, drawing attention to the protection of the Nazca Lines as a social issue."

The environmental activist group Greenpeace sparked anger in 2014 when it staged a protest near the Nazca Lines' famous hummingbird, for which it later apologised.

Tourism-dependent Peru is also home to the World Heritage-listed, ancient Inca citadel Machu Picchu.

Peru was last week certified by the World Travel & Tourism Council under its Safe Travels initiative, which aims to see tourism recover in adherence to protocols to avoid the spread of COVID-19.

"Obtaining this seal is truly very important for us," tourism minister Rocio Barrios told the Spanish news agency Efe.

"We have had a quite restrictive quarantine and we are now opening activities to bring back tourism."

Earlier this year, tourists were arrested after faeces was found at Machu Picchu, with one man charged with "destroying Peru's cultural heritage".

The Nazca Runways: Flat mountaintops that defy explanation

The giant flat Mountaintops at Nazca have remained a profound mystery for decades. Even today, archaeologists are unable to explain how and why ‘ancient man’ created massive, flat ‘runway-like’ marks thousands of years ago.

Giant Ancient Alien Runways at Nazca
Image

We have all been fascinated by the Nazca and Palpa lines for decades. These incredible pieces of ancient ‘art’ are located in the arid Peruvian coastal plain approximately 400 kilometers south of modern-day Lima. The staggering geoglyphs cover around 450 kilometers and were created on the arid floor sometime between 500 BC and 500 AD.

The Nazca and Palpa lines are considered one of archaeology’s greatest mystery, mostly because of their size, quantity, and nature. Some of the lines depict living creatures, stylized plants, and imaginary beings, as well as geometric figures several kilometers long.

According to studies, the largest of the Nazca figures is approximately 1000 feet, and the longest geoglyph goes on for around 9 miles.

A feature if the flattened mountain tops that is not addressed in this article are two 1) How could they excavate such a massive amount of material without having millions of workers for hundreds of years for the effort? 2) Even more astounding is where did the removed debris go , there is no evidence of the removed material anywhere around the site?

However, the most mysterious discoveries at Nazca are the enigmatic mountain tops that eerily resemble modern-day runways. The mountaintops of some of the surrounding mountains at Nazca look as if something literally pressed down —with incredible force— the top of the mountain. Many researchers have said that the mysterious mountaintops look as if something managed to ‘perfectly’ cut through the mountaintop, creating incredible flat surfaces.

So how is it possible that these giant ‘runway-like’ mountains even exist? And if the Nazca are known for having created the incredible desert-art, intricate figures of animals, plants and geometric shapes, why would they even bother and create these huge flat surfaces?

Image

There are numerous questions that remain unanswered at Nazca. Were these giant figures meant to be seen from above? Do they mimic constellations in the sky? What were the ancient’s trying to say to future generations? Were the Nazca lines mere ancient art? If so… why would ancient mankind create art that cannot be fully appreciated from the ground?

Image

Today when it comes to the Nazca and Palpa lines, the most accepted theories are that these are giant astronomical calendars, ceremonial sites, coordinate systems, and last but not least, giant landing strips created by our cosmic neighbor’s thousands of years ago.

The two things not mentioned in this article that are the most astounding mystery's surrounding the flattened mountain tops are 1) Where did they get the millions of workers that would have been needed to do this over hundreds of years and how would they sustain them with found and water. 2) Where are the removed material debris, none can be located anywhere around the flattened mountain's.

Alien visitors or avant-garde installation? Mysterious monolith discovered in the Utah desert

A mysterious object resembling the freestanding plank sculptures of the late Minimalist artist John McCracken—or the alien-built monoliths in Stanley Kubrick’s sci-fi classic 2001: A Space Odyssey—has been discovered in a remote area of the Utah desert, prompting theories ranging from extraterrestrial visitation to avant-garde installation.

Biologists of the Utah Division of Wildlife spotted the monolith from a helicopter while conducting a routine count of bighorn sheep in the area. The location of the monolith has not been disclosed, but aerial footage showing the object installed within a red rock canyon suggests that it lives somewhere in southern Utah, which has a distinct topological landscape.

According to Bret Hutchings, the pilot of the helicopter, the monolith, which appears to be made from steel or metal, is between 10 and 12 ft tall and was likely installed on the site rather than dropped from above by celestial visitors. “I’m assuming it’s some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big 2001: A Space Odyssey fan,” Hutchings told KSL news.

No artist has come forth to claim credit for the monolith yet, and David Zwirner, which represents McCracken, did not respond to a request for comment at the time of this writing. There is no known record of the artist's work installed in the Utah desert, although McCracken did live in-between nearby northern New Mexico and New York until his death in 2011.

The wilderness of the Southwestern US has a rich and storied history of Land Art and especially for works that retain their magic and mystery by being largely inaccessible or challenging to locate, from Robert Smithson’s 1970 magnum opus Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake to Michael Heizer’s 1969 Double Negative near the Utah border in Nevada.

The mysterious silver monolith in the Utah desert has disappeared
CNN Expansion, Mel Alonso

By Alanne Orjoux and Melissa Alonso, CNN

Updated 6:15 AM ET, Sun November 29, 2020

https://www.cnn.com/2020/11/28/us/utah-monolith-disappears-trnd/index.html

(CNN)A tall, silver, shining metal monolith discovered in the desert in southeastern Utah -- which prompted theories of alien placement and drew determined hikers to its secret location -- has now disappeared, the state's Bureau of Land Management said Saturday.
The monolith was removed by an "unknown party" sometime Friday night, the agency said in a Facebook post.

"We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the 'monolith,' has been removed" from BLM public lands, the post said.
"The BLM did not remove the structure, which is considered private property."

'We've got to go look at it!'

The monolith was first discovered November 18 by officers from the Utah Department of Public Safety's Aero Bureau.

They were flying by helicopter, helping the Division of Wildlife Resources count bighorn sheep in southeastern Utah, when they spotted something that seemed right out of "2001: A Space Odyssey."

"One of the biologists ... spotted it, and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it," pilot Bret Hutchings told CNN affiliate KSL. "He was like, 'Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!' And I was like, 'What.' And he's like, 'There's this thing back there -- we've got to go look at it!'"

And there it was -- in the middle of the red rock was a shiny, silver metal monolith sticking out of the ground. Hutchings guessed it was "between 10 and 12 feet high." It didn't look like it was randomly dropped to the ground, he told KSL, but rather it looked like it had been planted.
"I'm assuming it's some new wave artist or something or, you know, somebody that was a big ("2001: A Space Odyssey") fan," he said, referencing a scene in the 1968 film where a black monolith appears.

Still, it is illegal to install structures or art without authorization on public lands "no matter what planet you're from," said Utah DPS in a statement released Monday.

Where is it?

The location of the monolith was not disclosed because authorities said they didn't want curiosity seekers to become stranded in the remote landscape and need to be rescued.

But of course, that didn't stop some. Several people already successfully located the monolith, tucked in a redrock slot canyon south of Moab.
The trek involved driving in the darkness over rocky terrain and verifying GPS coordinates, according to three people who went to see it. At least one explorer got lost at first. But the trip was worth it, they said, even if the monolith wasn't the work of aliens.

David Surber may have been among the very first to view the monolith in person. The coordinates to the monolith were circulating on Reddit, but none of the users could confirm they were correct. Surber volunteered to find out.

The coordinates were indeed correct, and Surber eagerly shared the results of his visit with 200 Reddit users who'd flooded his inbox. Among his findings: The monolith wasn't magnetic or solid (he said it sounded "like a cardboard box" when he knocked on it). He also shared step-by-step instructions for the drive out to the monolith.
"At the end of the day, extraterrestrial or made through artistic expression; the monolith provided an opportunity for thousands of people to rally behind something positive again," he told CNN in an email. "It was a good escape from all the negativity we've experienced in 2020."

CNN's Scottie Andrew and Leah Asmelash contributed to this report.

A mysterious metal monolith has appeared in Romania this week after another similar structure found in the remote Utah desert was removed by an 'unknown party'.

The shiny triangular pillar was found on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt in northern Romania last Thursday.

It was spotted a few metres away from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, an fort built by the ancient Dacian people between 82 BC and AD 106.

The peculiar find comes after a similar monolith was found in the Utah desert with no explanation, sparking wry speculation that it could have been the work of aliens, but is more likely the work of a prankster inspired by science fiction novel 2001: A Space Odyssey.

In the book by Arthur C Clarke, later made into a film by Stanley Kubrick, a monolith first appears on Earth in Africa three million years ago and appears to confer intelligence upon a starving tribe of great apes to develop tools.

The monolith is used as a tool by an alien race to investigate worlds across the galaxy and to encourage the development of intelligent life.

In the book, the great apes use their tools to kill animals to eat meat to end their starvation, and to kill a predatory leopard. The next day, the main character uses a club to kill the leader of a rival tribe of apes, leading to an awakening of intelligence and the development of humans.

In Utah, the pillar, which protruded approximately 12 feet from the red rocks in southern Utah, was spotted last Wednesday by baffled local BLM officials who were counting bighorn sheep from a helicopter.

However the three-sided structure was removed by an 'unknown party' on Friday evening, the Bureau of Land Management Utah said in a statement.

News of the discovery in Utah quickly went viral online, with many noting the object's similarity to the strange alien monoliths that trigger huge leaps in human progress in Kubrick's classic sci-fi film '2001: A Space Odyssey.'

In Romania, the triangular structure has a height of about 13 feet and one side faces Mount Ceahlau, known locally as the Holy Mountain.

It is one of the most famous mountains in Romania, and is listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the country.

Romanian officials still do not know who is responsible for erecting the mysterious monolith.

Neamt Culture and Heritage official Rocsana Josanu said: 'We have started looking into the strange appearance of the monolith.

'It is on private property, but we still don't know who the monolith's owner is yet. It is in a protected area on an archaeological site.'

She added: 'Before installing something there, they needed permission from our institution, one that must then be approved by the Ministry of Culture.'

Former Israeli space security chief says aliens exist, humanity not ready
This "Galactic Federation" has supposedly been in contact with Israel and the US for years, but are keeping themselves a secret to prevent hysteria until humanity is ready.

https://www.jpost.com/omg/former-israeli-space-security-chief-says-aliens-exist-humanity-not-ready-651405

Has the State of Israel made contact with aliens?

According to retired Israeli general and current professor Haim Eshed, the answer is yes, but this has been kept a secret because "humanity isn't ready."

Speaking in an interview to Yediot Aharonot, Eshed – who served as the head of Israel's space security program for nearly 30 years and is a three-time recipient of the Israel Security Award – explained that Israel and the US have both been dealing with aliens for years.
And this by no means refers to immigrants, with Eshed clarifying the existence of a "Galactic Federation."

The 87-year-old former space security chief gave further descriptions about exactly what sort of agreements have been made between the aliens and the US, which ostensibly have been made because they wish to research and understand "the fabric of the universe." This cooperation includes a secret underground base on Mars, where there are American and alien representatives.

If true, this would coincide with US President Donald Trump's creation of the Space Force as the fifth branch of the US armed forces, though it is unclear how long this sort of relationship, if any, has been going on between the US and its reported extraterrestrial allies.

But Eshed insists that Trump is aware of them, and that he was "on the verge" of disclosing their existence. However, the Galactic Federation reportedly stopped him from doing so, saying they wished to prevent mass hysteria since they felt humanity needed to "evolve and reach a stage where we will... understand what space and spaceships are," Yediot Aharonot reported.

As for why he's chosen to reveal this information now, Eshed explained that the timing was simply due to how much the academic landscape has changed, and how respected he is in academia.

"If I had come up with what I’m saying today five years ago, I would have been hospitalized," he explained to Yediot.
He added that "today, they’re already talking differently. I have nothing to lose. I’ve received my degrees and awards; I am respected in universities abroad, where the trend is also changing.

Eshed provided more information in his newest book, The Universe Beyond the Horizon – conversations with Professor Haim Eshed, along with other details such as how aliens have prevented nuclear apocalypses and "when we can jump in and visit the Men in Black." The book is available now for NIS 98.
While it is unclear if any evidence exists that could support Eshed's claims, they did come just ahead of a recent announcement by SpaceIL, the group behind Israel's failed attempt to land a spacecraft on the moon in 2019.

Uploaded to social media with the text "Ready to get excited again?," the announcement contained a 15-second video of the moon with text saying "Back to the Moon," followed by the date of December 9, 2020.

It is likely that this is a follow up to the Beresheet spacecraft, which crashed after engineers lost contact with it just minutes before it was due to land. However, the follow up project, titled Beresheet 2, is expected to take three years to be ready.

But sadly, we may never know the truth.

The Jerusalem Post was unable to reach out to this supposed Galactic Federation for comment.

FAA notified after large blue UFO seen above Oahu appeared to drop into ocean

https://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/2020/12/31/faa-notified-after-mysterious-ufo-seen-above-oahu-appeared-drop-into-ocean/

By Allyson Blair | December 31, 2020 at 5:19 PM HST - Updated January 2 at 4:25 AM

HONOLULU, Hawaii (HawaiiNewsNow) - An unidentified flying object spotted in the evening sky over Leeward Oahu prompted witnesses to call 911 on Tuesday.

The sighting happened about 8:30 p.m.

There are multiple videos of what appears to be a glowing‚ oblong mass — both in the sky and in the water.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration say there were no aircraft incidents or accidents in this area at the time. But multiple witnesses reported seeing a large blue object fall out of the sky and into the ocean.

In a one video a woman can be heard saying, “Something is in the sky. What is that?”

Misitina Sape told Hawaii News Now she captured the image at 8:26 p.m. near Haleakala Avenue in Nanakuli.

Not long after, a woman named Moriah spotted what looked like the same object passing over Princess Kahanu Estates.

“I look up and then I was like oh s***!,” she said. “I started calling my husband and them because they were all in the garage. I was like hey. Come look up there. See if you see what I see. They all said yea!”

The 38-year-old says she’s never really been a believer in UFOs, but the bright blue object had them so intrigued they jumped in the car and started following it.

“I don’t know what it was,” she said. “This one was going so fast.”

The journey ended less than three miles from where it began. She says they stopped the car on Farrington Highway in front of the Board of Water Supply building after the object appeared to drop into the ocean.

In one of Moriah’s videos you can hear her say, “(It) went land in the water. Whatever it is.”

She described it as being larger than a telephone pole and says she never heard it make any sound.

“We called 911,” Moriah said, “For have like one cop or somebody for come out and come check em out.”

While officers were on scene Moriah says they spotted a second light.

“My husband went look up and he seen the white one coming,” she said. “The white one was smaller. Was coming in the same direction as the blue one.”

They lost sight of the object after it passed over a nearby mountain.

Thursday morning we asked Honolulu police if investigators figured out what fell in the water. A spokesperson told us they didn’t have any information.

Meanwhile, FAA spokesperson Ian Gregor said the agency received a report from police Tuesday night about a possible plane down in the area “but had no aircraft disappear off radars. And no reports of overdue or missing aircraft.”

Although Moriah’s had a couple days to think about it, she says she’s still baffled by what she saw.

“To this day I don’t know,” she said laughing. “If you guys can find out what it was, I like know, you know?”

Classified UFO Documents Could Be Released Within 180 Days Thanks to COVID-19 Relief Bill

Trace William Cowen
Wed, December 30, 2020, 11:18 AM PST

https://news.yahoo.com/classified-ufo-documents-could-released-191840038.html

Though you may not have seen it mentioned too many times in this week's headlines centered on COVID-19 relief, the increasingly mainstream UAP (unidentified aerial phenomena) research community has reason to be cautiously excited about the implementation of a tucked-away element of the recently signed $2.3 trillion spending bill.

As Christopher K. Mellon—ex-Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Intelligence in both the Clinton and W. Bush eras—explained on Tuesday, the freshly enacted Intelligence Authorization Act brings in the Senate Intelligence Committee's "report language" calling for an unclassified and all-sources report on the UAP (more commonly known as UFO) issue. According to Mellon, "it's now fair to say" this request has bipartisan support.

With the passing of the aforementioned spending bill, which includes the Intelligence Authorization Act, a 180-day countdown has begun.

Included as a "committee comment" in the Intelligence Authorization Act, the committee directs the director of national intelligence "in consultation with the Secretary of Defense and the heads of such other agencies" to submit a report within 180 days of the date of enactment of the Act to the congressional intelligence and armed services committees on UAPs.

The report, per the committee, should include a thorough analysis of available data and intelligence reporting on UAPs. Types of potential data specifically mentioned in the document are geospatial intelligence, signals intelligence, human intelligence, and measurement and signals intelligence.

Mellon spoke with science, tech, and defense news site the Debrief about this latest development. In a statement he shared with the site via email, Mellon—who's been a prominent voice in the UAP field in recent years due in large part to his work with Tom DeLonge's To the Stars Academy of Arts & Science (TTSA)—expressed measured enthusiasm about what's ahead.

"I'm hopeful the new Administration will rigorously execute its oversight prerogatives because the concerns of the public and numerous U.S. military personnel have been ignored by a complacent national security bureaucracy for far too long," he said.

The work of TTSA has been integral to the current moment of pop culture and governmental favor for those who have long pushed for a more united approach to UAP research. Reports circulated earlier this month, however, claiming that both Mellon and fellow TTSA figure Lue Elizondo (who previously served in a leadership capacity for a secret government UAP investigatory group) had left the company. TTSA has not publicly commented on the matter.

On Wednesday, Elizondo responded to the growing news coverage of the 180-day countdown, stating that the achievements of the past three years are due "in large part" to the UAP research community on Twitter.

BACK TO THE FUTURE Why 2021 could be the ‘golden year’ for UFO revelations – from hidden files release to $10billion secret weapon launch

WHETHER or not we are alone in the universe is one of the biggest mysteries in science – bu Harvard's top astronomer is now saying we finally have an answer.

Prof Avi Loeb is making the explosive claim that the unusual interstellar object known as Oumuamua which passed Earth is really alien technology – but even that might not be the most shocking revelation about extraterrestrial life to emerge this year.

Suggestions that Oumuamua, which is a Hawaiian word roughly meaning "scout", was alien technology were quashed by the scientific community after the strange object was first detected in 2017.

But now Prof Loeb has made the stunning claim in a new book out this week, Extraterrestrial: The First Sign of Intelligent Life Beyond Earth, that the mysterious phenomenon must be from an alien civilisation.

The Harvard scientist is among the most credible people to ever claim to have evidence of the existence of aliens.

But his groundbreaking book isn't the only reason UFO hunters think we might be on the verge of a historic revelation about visitors from outer space.

Leaked footage of ‘pyramid-shaped’ UFOs is real, Pentagon says
By Josh K. Elliott Global News

Updated April 14, 2021 2:23 pm

Newly leaked video of flashing, triangle-shaped objects that flew over a U.S. warship is real, the Pentagon said, after UFO investigators released the clip and several other puzzling photos online.

The photos and videos were distributed by documentary filmmaker Jeremy Corbell and George Knapp, a Las Vegas-based reporter who has covered UFO-related stories for decades. The leaks include a night-vision video at sea, a series of grainy infrared images and smartphone photos captured from the cockpit of an FA-18 fighter, which had previously been posted online.

The Pentagon confirmed in a statement this week that the leaked photos and videos were captured by U.S. navy personnel, though it declined to label them Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) — the government’s official term for a UFO.

“I can confirm that the referenced photos and videos were taken by Navy personnel,” Pentagon spokesperson Susan Gough said in a statement to the Black Vault, a site with a long history of obtaining UFO-related documents through freedom of information laws.

“They confirmed they are all genuine, but won’t give their designation,” site operator John Greenewald said.

“The UAP (Task Force) has included these incidents in their ongoing examinations,” Gough said.

“As we have said before, to maintain operations security and to avoid disclosing information that may be useful to potential adversaries, DOD does not discuss publicly the details of either the observations or the examinations of reported incursions into our training ranges or designated airspace, including those incursions initially designated as UAP.”

Corbell says the video and photos were originally shared at an Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI) briefing on May 1, 2020, and later leaked to him. He says he worked with Knapp to verify the authenticity and context of the footage before releasing it online.

“These are authentic photos and video from actual military encounters with UFOs — generated to educate high-level intelligence officers within our military on the nature and presentation of the UAP/UFO phenomenon,“ he wrote on his website.

Perhaps the most startling video is the one recorded from the deck of the USS Russell, which appears to show several unidentified flying triangles “flashing” in the clouds off the coast of San Diego. The brief video was shot through a night-vision camera in July of 2019, Corbell says.

“The USS Russell observed and recorded multiple ‘pyramid’ shaped craft,” he wrote.

The video shows a distinctly triangle-shaped object moving through the clouds above the warship. The object joins two other, fainter triangles in the sky before the video ends.

Photos from the second event show a “spherical shaped craft” near the USS Omaha, according to Corbell. The black-and-white, grainy sequence of infrared photos depicts a black circle seemingly descending into the ocean.

Corbell says the object seemed to slip effortlessly into the water instead of making a splash and taking damage upon impact. He adds that the navy sent a submarine to search for wreckage, but they found nothing.

The third event described in the briefings involves a series of photos captured by a weapons systems officer from an FA-18 jet in Virginia on March 4, 2019, Corbell says.

The weapons systems officer snapped photos of three objects that afternoon within a matter of about 20 minutes, according to Knapp, Corbell’s collaborator. The objects were described as a “sphere,” an “acorn” and a “metallic blimp” in the intelligence briefing, they say.

The nature of all the objects involved remains unknown to the public, despite speculation that they might be of alien origin.

Corbell says the combined trove of footage is evidence that the U.S. Department of Defence is taking UFOs seriously — and that these phenomena are worth exploring in a “rational and transparent” way.

UFOs have long been a taboo subject in the scientific community, and a tongue-in-cheek topic for mainstream news.

Several leaks and Pentagon statements in recent years have added credibility to the discussion, particularly after the U.S. government confirmed that there are some flying objects that it simply cannot identify.

Pentagon officials have taken a more open attitude toward UFOs over the last two years, after studying them in secret for several years. They’ve confirmed several mysterious videos, and have started encouraging military members to document and report their UAP encounters for safety reasons.

“This is all about frequent incursions into our training ranges by UAPs,” Joe Gradisher, spokesperson for the deputy chief of naval operations for information warfare, told CNN in 2019. “Those incursions present a safety hazard to the safe flight of our aviators and security of our operations.”

The Pentagon announced its official UAP Task Force on Aug. 4 of last year. Its mission is to “detect, analyze and catalogue UAPs that could potentially pose a threat to U.S. national security.”

In other words, their job is to identify the strange visitors that keep popping up during military training missions — be they visitors from Russia, China or another world altogether.

A UFO report may soon be public — and it’ll be big, ex-official says

Last year’s gargantuan $2.3 trillion appropriations bill did a couple very obvious things: It provided millions of Americans badly needed coronavirus relief aid and it averted an impending government shutdown.

It also dealt with ... UFOs.

The legislation, which President Donald Trump signed into law, was a bureaucratic nesting doll that ran more than 5,500 pages and contained the Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021, which itself carried an unusual provision in its “committee comment” section, beneath the understated heading “Advanced Aerial Threats.”

The stipulation mandates that the director of national intelligence work with the secretary of defense on a report detailing everything the government knows about unidentified flying objects — known in agency lingo as “unidentified aerial phenomena” or “anomalous aerial vehicles.”

It must be made public, and when it is, it will be big, former intelligence director John Ratcliffe said in a recent interview.

“Frankly, there are a lot more sightings than have been made public,” Ratcliffe told Fox News host Maria Bartiromo on Friday.

The report must include “detailed analysis of unidentified aerial phenomena data and intelligence” gathered by the Office of Naval Intelligence, the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force and the FBI, the provision reads.

It also calls for “a detailed description of an interagency process” that will ensure that data can be gathered and analyzed across the federal government. The report could document sightings from “all over the world,” Ratcliffe said.

“There are instances where we don’t have good explanations for some of the things that we’ve seen,” he added. “And when that information becomes declassified, I’ll be able to talk a little bit more about that.”

That time could be coming soon.

When Trump approved the spending package on Dec. 27, a 180-day countdown began, giving intelligence officials until June to deliver lawmakers their write-up.

However, two factors might delay the report’s release: Agencies have missed similar congressional reporting deadlines in the past; and the provision is not technically binding, as the language was included in the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on the bill, not the bill itself.

“In other words, it isn’t statute, but the agencies/departments generally treat report language as bill language,” said one senior Senate aide familiar with the legislation.

How angry pilots got the Navy to stop dismissing UFO sightings

The office of Sen. Mark R. Warner (D-Va.), chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, declined to comment on the UFO report. A spokesperson for the intelligence director’s office said “we have nothing to offer.”

Ratcliffe’s pronouncement comes months after the Pentagon released three grainy videos of UFOs recorded by U.S. Navy pilots using infrared cameras. The footage shows the objects moving rapidly across the screen. “My gosh,” one pilot remarks. The videos had been circulating for years but the Defense Department move gave them further official imprimatur.

Former senator Harry M. Reid (D-Nev.), a longtime backer of UFO research, said then that the footage “only scratches the surface of research and materials available.”

“The U.S. needs to take a serious, scientific look at this and any potential national security implications,” he said. “The American people deserve to be informed.”

The increasingly vocal crowd of space watchers is eagerly awaiting the forthcoming intelligence agency report. Some of them say that studying UFOs is essential to the country’s security.

In a July interview with Miami’s CBS4 News, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), vice chair of the Intelligence Committee, said the prospect that something otherworldly is behind the flying objects does not concern him as much as the idea that a U.S. adversary could be making secret technological advances.

“The bottom line is if there are things flying over your military bases and you don’t know what they are because they aren’t yours and they are exhibiting — potentially — technologies that you don’t have at your own disposal, that to me is a national security risk and one that we should be looking into,” Rubio said.

Others have argued that the research has been equated with claims of extraterrestrial life and unfairly written off as kooky science fiction.

In the Fox News interview, Ratcliffe described the sightings this way: “We are talking about objects that have been seen by Navy or Air Force pilots, or have been picked up by satellite imagery, that frankly engage in actions that are difficult to explain, movements that are hard to replicate, that we don’t have the technology for or are traveling at speeds that exceed the sound barrier without a sonic boom.”

“There’s actually quite a few of those,” he added. “And I think that that information is being gathered and will be put out in a way the American people can see.”

Christopher Mellon, a former deputy assistant secretary of defense for intelligence, applauded Ratcliffe’s disclosure. Mellon, who also worked with former Blink-182 frontman Tom DeLonge’s To the Stars Academy of Arts and Sciences, called it “an important and noteworthy admission.”

One measure of the level of anticipation surrounding the report can be found on the Twitter account of Luis Elizondo, an ex-intelligence officer who also worked at To the Stars Academy. Last month, Elizondo asked his followers for “the top three (3) things you would like the 180-Day report to address/say.”

He received more than 850 replies.

“Thank you for the overwhelming response to my question,” he wrote. “Another example of how you all are changing the landscape.”
