Hi Zappa people :smoke:

How many members here are music lover? anyone playing some musical instrument?
I'm now practicing and really trying my best to do this techniques but to be honest I'm really not that good, or should I say I'm having a hard time learning it. Any suggestions?

Oh here's what I have been trying to do, and been practicing for a week now. :(

I play guitar a little bit. The old minor pentatonic scale and some basic chords are the basis for most of what I can play. I've been thinking about getting a bass and starting to plunk around on that too.

I have skills in the low-average range on guitar. It's still fun tho. I can pick out simple chords and melodies on piano, especially if I stick to the the black keys. I borrowed a guy's sax once, and figured out how to use the reed and create basic scales. My secret desire is to be a drummer, above all else, but when I actually tried I sucked. :D

I can do a fair version of "Dirty Love" on the guitar.

My latest attempt on guitar is "In The City" (slideless) by Joe Walsh.

I am a horrible musician and just don't have that gene...but I used to play harmonica quite well to Rolling Stones songs and I have had surprising successes on Bongos and Conga drums for some unknown reason... :?

I took my son's LP under my arm when he stopped taking lessons and did not touch it for a year (I paid for it). I've been learning to play by myself and getting good enough to play some zappa riffs and "take your clothes off wydance". I'm playing a minimum 20 minutes a day every day for the last 3 years. I will have to see a professional teacher soon if I want to get better. I really wish I'd taken it up when I was young. Back then I sang in a couple puker bands around town.

Playing guitar since 1968.
These last few years, interest has vanished quite a bit.
My problem is that I need a team, and I wasn't lucky so far.
Some (lots of) musicians don't really like to learn new things.
It won't get better with the upcoming years.
I don't see too many 60 years old musicians willing to work hard at partitions.
So, they play Blues and ol Rock'n'roll.
No more Prog for the little old me.
:P

Guitar, Bongos, totally wrong Harmonica and the Fool.....

It started some time around 1963-64, my cousin started guitar lessons and he schooled me. There are five boys in their family and they had a very musical household, which in the early years was my second home. All the boys had guitars and guitar lessons, my uncle had a baby grand piano, he showed us some things and we mucked about on that, I can remember opening up the lid and firing marbles and ball bearings along it's strings with Chrissy pumping the pedals trying to get weird sounds out of it, I think we were about eight when the rules went out the window. My auntie was the autoharp queen, I own one, but I've never really got the knack of it, great for a mysteriouso sound or two, but it's mostly decorative. There was an old upright bass which got a hammering, the second to oldest cuz was in a five piece band which often practiced in their garage and would leave their gear set up, so when the band was away, we would play with all their stuff. The third oldest cuz is an excellent guitarist and pianist he was a serious kid and paid attention during his childhood, regretfully I didn't. As a teen it was standard blues all the way, which has stuck with me.

These days I'm drowning in effects pedals and loop pedals (you call that music!) and play about with a couple of cheap keyboards an even cheaper drum machine and an ugly little synthesizer....I have no idea what I'm doing with most of the stuff but I love it, and can burn up millions of dollars of bedroom/studio time with no results other than a spike in the power bill, ringing ears and a wide grin.....

In February I had the privilege of attending a Dweezil Zappa master class which, aside from blowing my mind, encouraged me to stop f@#king around and start really practicing again, which I have been doing in earnest ever since.....

On my latest album I play flute, bass flute, tenor & soprano saxes, bass clarinet, guitar, lap steel, Moog synthesizers (Minimoog, Sub Phatty, Mother 32), and a few notes on glockenspiel.

Wow, a multi-instrumentalist! Nice cover, the Burgess fauna! Way before the Upper Devonian...

Your welcome. Thanks for making it.

Inspired by The_Acadian_2 and Gray_Ghost I decided to start practicing again. I’m going to do at least one hour a day. Got started today. First I’m trying to relearn some things that are or were familiar to me (fingering and picking exercises. Note: The main riff to FZ’s Magic Fingers is a good pentatonic exercise, a few strummy songs, shuffles and turnarounds, bits and riffs to some classic rock songs, plus some blues noodling).

Maybe if folks want to share some practice tips, or good resources, or maybe just what you’re working on or latest musical accomplishment is you can put it on this thread.

Anyone on the internet charging money to show you how to play someone else's song is an asshole.

This one page unravels a bit of the mystery of chords and scales. It's in piano form but applies to guitar etc. The notes are written in the box below the piano if you don't know the keyboard.
