One day, oh, 15 years ago or so, I wrote something like "Live in NY" and jimmie d informed me that it isn't an album. Its "Zappa in New York". Glad to see I'm not the only one! :)

Zappa LIVE FROM NEW YORK *

vs

hmmm...what stands a chance?

Hendrix - Rainbow Bridge

It's really down to Punky's Whips, Cruising For Burgers and Enema Bandit. With points taken away for the 16 minute Purple Lagoon. Oh, and the horn arrangements are a nice touch.

It's probably an aversion to Eddie Jobson's keys on my part. His violin on Black Napkins has the opposite effect on me. I love it. It's a matter of tone, I suppose. Although the approach to playing the 2 instruments is very different as well.

That Miles collection, is the sound quality as good as it can be? Or is it a knock off? Hard for one double live album, even one as great as ZINY, to stand up against 20 Miles Davis albums.

I just think the solos by all the players on Purple Lagoon are fantastic (Brecker Brothers, Patrick O'Hearn, FZ). I love the head too. It sounds like a pinball machine to me. I never really thought about the keyboard tone. I thought the backing was nice.

I'm no audiophile but the Miles collection sounds fine to me. I think they are just the standard releases that are out there. It came in a nice box with a booklet. I only paid $40 for it.

What's the outcome? We keep pitting FZ albums against each other until there's only one left and either that lasts for ever or whoever knocks it off should move to another forum? I guess, if you haven't got anything better to do ... well, that's usually when I pipe up ...

I think having nothing better to do is a big factor. As far as Zappa vs. Zappa stalemates I think you just have to throw something ridiculous in there every once in awhile to keep the ball rolling. Most of these threads I suspect are just diversions to get us through some of the more mundane moments of our days. Usually I'm out paragliding or cliff diving, but when I'm not, I'm on the Zappa forum.

Come on, Trip. If 20 Miles Davis albums can't beat ZINY how the hell is The Who Quadrophenia live in London gonna beat it? Is that the one with Gilmour on The Dirty Jobs? Gilmour knows which tunes are the best from Quadrophenia, gotta give him credit. But not even the original Quadrophenia from 1973 can hold up against 20 Miles albums, even if you hate anything that gets filed under jazz. We must maintain some thread credibility here.
