Six healthy reasons to drink more beer

There is good news for beer lovers: Scientists have found several health-promoting properties of beer. So you can raise your glass with a clear conscience. Here's to that!

1. Beer increases bone density
Various studies have shown that beer has an increased silicon content. This helps to connect muscle and bone tissue to each other and increase bone density. Dark beer in particular, with its high hop content, contains silicon. So, moderate consumption of dark beer can certainly help prevent osteoporosis.

2. Beer lowers the risk of heart attack
According to Harvard University, more than 100 studies have found an association between moderate beer consumption and reduced risk of heart attack by 25 to 40 percent. So, if you want to do your heart some good, treat yourself to a nice, cold beer with dinner every now and then.

3. Beer lowers your cholesterol level
Scientists have found that beer consumption contributes to increasing the proportion of healthy HDL cholesterol in the body. Two beers a day can have a positive effect on cholesterol levels.

4. Beer decreases your risk of getting diabetes

In comparative studies, a relationship between moderate alcohol consumption and a lower risk of type 2 diabetes was found. American researchers found that of those who drank 1-4 10 oz beers per day, the risk of getting this disease was lower.

5. Beer can prevent kidney stones
You wouldn't wish kidney stones on your worst enemy. Fortunately, this study found that the probability of getting kidney stones drops to up to 40 percent when you drink a bottle of beer a day.

6. Beer protects from dementia

Of course, it sounds strange at first: using alcohol to combat dementia! Anyone who has ever had a blackout is probably now shaking his or her head in disbelief. But the above mentioned xanthohumol can actually also help to prevent oxidative stress. This is one of the factors that promotes dementia in old age. Therefore, beer (of course in moderation) can actually keep the brain fit for its age.

thanks coe!

Last night (Jan 29, 2017) at the Downington location of School Of Rock hosted a tribute to the music of Frank Zappa. The students and instructors were joined by surprise guest Dweezil Zappa, who spent time with the kids and then took to the stage to perform with them.

Downington School Of Rock instructor and Brothers Past member Thomas McKee wrote about the very special night on his Facebook page:

I’ve seen some incredible things at School of Rock in the ten years I’ve been a part of this wonderful organization, but last night may have topped them all.

Dweezil Zappa visited our school to catch some of our Zappa tribute. He was gracious enough to spend some time with the kids before the show, and even took the stage to perform Apostrophe and Muffin Man. He took photos with anyone who asked, signed autographs, and spoke to the kids from his heart. It was one of the most genuinely amazing things I’ve ever experienced.

The show was incredible, but the atmosphere was something I will never forget. The energy was through the roof, both onstage and off. It was truly a special night and there are no words to adequately express how I feel right now. I am proud of all the kids, all of the teaching staff and members of our team here, and blown away by the sincerity and passion of Dweezil. Big props go to Brian Davis for directing the show, raising the bar once again at our school, and inspiring with his passion, heart and dedication.

There are three celestial events happening at the same time this weekend !

Image

Space, the final frontier. Whether you’re studying it, hiding from it or knocking boots underneath it, there is some cool shit floating around up there. Just recently we had the most epic super moon ever, but that is nothing compared to the celestial event you’ll be able to witness.

This weekend you’ll be able to observe a snow moon, a comet and a lunar eclipse. Now I know that sounds like a lot of sitting around and searching the stars, but fortunately for you, it’s all happening at the same time.

Image

I’m sure you’re aware that a comet is a small body of ice that travels too close to the sun, causing it to evolve into a gasses and burn up before your eyes. I’m sure you’re also equally aware that a lunar eclipse takes place when the moon passes directly behind the earth, causing it to all but disappear. Good for you Mr. Wizard. Did you also know that a snow moon is a full moon that falls in February, the month Earth historically sees the most snow?

Image

Each one of these individually is pretty cool, but may not measure on your “get off the couch” meter. However, seeing all three of these events at one time should be enough to at least get you to a window, you hermit. To see all three at the same time, you’ll have to observe the sky, preferably away from the light of the city, Friday between 7:45 – 9:53 EST.

DID YOU KNOW? Jimi Hendrix wrote “Spanish Castle Magic” about a favorite club of his outside Seattle. The line "Takes 'bout a half a day to get there" referred to the beat-up car he drove at the time.

Dweezil Zappa Announces ‘What’s In A Name?’ Storytelling Tour
Feb 10, 2017
•7:15 am PST
•By Scott Bernstein

Guitarist Dweezil Zappa has announced his first ever series of spoken word concerts. Zappa’s What’s In A Name? run will find him telling stories, answering questions from the crowd and discuss his father Frank Zappa’s legendary career all with guitar accompaniment.

Dweezil will preview the run with a special show at Silo’s in Napa, California on February 26. He then begins the series of shows in July. Zappa will play City Winery venues in Chicago on July 7, Nashville on July 8, Atlanta on July 9 and New York City on July 11.

“I look at it what I do like an old-school Italian family business,” said Dweezil. “I want to carry on a tradition in a way that respects my father’s intentions as a composer and his integrity as a person. At the same time I have my own music to create and share with people. The best way to carry everything forward is to play the music live and share stories.”

Alone Yet Not Alone (2013)
Best Original Song
In 2014, the title song from this Christian film was nominated for Best Original Song. Two weeks after the announcement was made, it was disqualified. The Academy discovered that the song’s composer, Bruce Broughton, was a member of the executive committee of the Academy’s musical branch. Since he had access to the emails of everyone else on the committee, he emailed the other 239 members to remind them about his film during the voting period.

That’s definitely against the rules. He misused his position and it backfired on him.

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer than left-handed people do.
