Project Update #71: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

HEY THERE, PEOPLE!

Checking in from deep inside the doc-making machine! More rewards, movie update and another nugget of pure gold from the vault!

A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME (GRATITUDE)!

Как дела, Freaks?! On the Kickstarter front we have undergone an overhaul, brought in more team support and are kicking up the whole process a few notches to get everyone squared away! This is a big campaign with a lot of backers, a lot of rewards and a lot of moving parts, so thanks so much for everyone’s patience! R i n g tones and wallpapers are heading out the door, as are the extra Groening print for those who got these rewards. Here’s a snippet of one of the wallpapers: Zappa at the Whisky a Go Go in 1968, an FZ era that is near and dear to my heart
Image
FZ at Whisky a Go-Go

So hope you enjoy the booty and thanks again, we couldn’t be doing what we’re doing without your participation and generosity. So much material was saved, preserved and archived and that’s all on you! Which leads me to…

OH GOD I AM THE AMERICAN DREAM!

That would make an excellent title for the doc, tho too much inside baseball methinks. The movie is in the early stages of editorial, and it’s going great! The vault material is a treasure trove we're diving into to lay out FZ’s story as it’s never been told. Me and editor Mike Nichols are bashing away and hope to have a first pass at the whole animal within the next six months, with the movie done and out hopefully by Spring or Summer of 2019. I’ll keep everyone posted on the progress and here we are slaving away:

A ZAPPA AFFAIR!

Even though our preservation work is completely done, we're still discovering new gems as we edit the movie. As some of you may know, The Berkeley Symphony Orchestra performed a series of concerts called A Zappa Affair,

Here's a little of FZ clowning around with the beautiful ballet dancers.

Hope you dug it! And watch this space for more doc news as we rumble along down that road!

Project Update #72: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

CIVILIZATION PHAZE IV
Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A quickie update in which we hoist our collective bodies up from the Zappa trenches with movie news, reward fun and extractions from the vault of a decidedly Synclavier nature!

THE JELLY & PAINT ON THE 40 WATT BULB!

مرحبا freaks! We have been very busy on all fronts Zappa. The documentary is roaring along, with almost 1000 hours of mostly unseen archival footage to work with and an incredible, decades-spanning epic story to tell! It is still early in the editorial process, but I am thrilled with the progress so far. I’ll have more to talk about in the new year, but suffice to say we are up to our ears in beautiful footage and treating it all with the love and reverence it deserves!

But it’s not all about the movie, it’s also about the rewards, which we continue to organize and get into your hands! My production offices are now doubling as a bustling shipping center, and there's more cool stuff to come!

Here’s our team painstakingly mounting the film strips for those backers who got ‘em. These are all original 16mm frames from Zappa’s vault, and you will love them!

SAMPLES FROM HELL!

There’s a ton of great stuff in the vault from FZ’s seminal work on the Synclavier. This little batch of clips is from August 30, 1985 -- Frank records and then builds a vocal sample patch on the Synclavier, employing some very cool stereo effects.

Hope you dig those as much as I do! And as always, more anon!

RAISIN' IT UP, WAXIN’ IT DOWN

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

An update in which we barrel along the road of making the film, and a timely nugget from the vault.

DONG WORK FOR YUDA

Hoe gaat het met jou, freaks? All is well here, immersed in editorial, and scouring our ballot guides for the upcoming vote. Like all of you, right?? With so much archival to log and identify, it’s been a gratifying, but enormous task to wrap our arms around this footage as we build the edit. Happy to report that we are in a great place, and taking our time to get it right!

Most of our work is editorial as the vast majority of the film will be archival footage from the vault. We are shooting a small selection of FZ insiders as we go. This past week we had the honor of interviewing the mighty Steve Vai https://www.vai.com/ at his home in Los Angeles. Aside from being a musical genius with an extraordinary career, and having profound insight into working with FZ, Vai also provided the air guitar licks in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey and the music for the Reaper Rap, so he and I go way back. And yes he will be returning for the air guitar on B&T3.

Here’s some shots of our gang at work. Including maestro DP Anghel Decca, http://www.angheldecca.com/ who also shot our Gail interviews and a lot of other work with me over the years.

CHECK OUT THE POLITICS PRACTICED BY THIS OAF

With the big midterm vote coming up, GOTV is on everyone’s mind. And we all know FZ was a huge activist for voter registration and the importance of a citizenry that takes part in the election process.

This vault clip is from the Today Show in 1988. Zappa interviewed with MTV exec Lee Masters. It's classic FZ.

https://youtu.be/EtX8ij_4mEg

Hope you dug it! Next update will include some snaps of our upcoming Vault Tours rewards. We have backers coming in from all over the world and we have a great time in store for them!

Project Update #74: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

JAMBON, JAMBON, THANK YOU OH THANK YOU, YOU'RE REALLY TOO KIND!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Backer tours here in sunny LA and amazing audio from the vault while in the thick of the documentary-making madness!

IN THE RECTORY BASEMENT!

Sveiki freaks! This past week we spent a couple of lovely days taking a select group of backers down into the vault, on the road around Hollywood to FZ haunts, inside FZ’s very own Rolls Royce and over to the ZFT, where our fabulous group from around the globe was able to get up close and personal with many of the art pieces, photos and other artifacts from the original UMRK and FZ office.

And big thanks to Ahmet, Diva and Vaultmeister Joe for taking part and being so cool and generous with all of us! It’s always a thrill for me to meet the backers in person, share Zappa stories and favorite tracks and discuss what me and the team are doing on the doc! The Kickstarter was hard work and it’s a lot to manage, but I LOVE the community of backers from all over the world and we couldn’t have saved the vault without you guys. So it’s been a really special journey for all of us here on the team.

Now here’s some of you enjoying the tour:

Another great group!

I HEARD THAT SOME SHEIK HAS BOUGHT NEW JERSEY LAST WEEK!

While we all enjoy the personal and background archival media, we crave new audio! So here’s something we unearthed in the vault; FZ and co performing Sleeping In A Jar, live at the Civic Center in Trenton New Jersey, April 29th, 1975.

The band is choice:

FZ- Guitar

Tom Fowler- Bass

Terry Bozzio- Drums

Napoleon Murphy Brock- Sax

Bruce Fowler- Trombone

Denny Walley- Slide Guitar

George Duke- Keyboards

Beefheart is in the band during this time, but not on this track. I love the energy of this performance, and am fairly certain you will too!

Hope you dug the track! Next update will include a really juicy surprise! Meantime, back to the editorial salt mines for me!

DOES THIS KIND OF LIFE LOOK INTERESTING TO YOU?

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A field update from the crazy buzzards making this behemoth of a documentary. Some news about the movie shoot and an exclusive audio gem from the vault!

MOTHER PEOPLE

We're well into a good, working cut of the doc now, after literal years of screening and shaping the archival media. Lots of work to do still, but there is a tiny, pinprick of light at the end of this deep tunnel of Zappa goodness.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of filming interviews with two extraordinary gents from two very different periods in FZ's career; the legendary Bunk Gardner from the first iteration of the Mothers and uber-brilliant Mike Keneally who joined Frank's cockeyed caravan in the 80's.

Here are a few choice shots from the day. And oh my, the stories they told...

Got a postcard today addressed to me on a sticker.
It also had a red on silver sticker celebrating the 20th anniv of Intercontinental Absurdities.
and a stamp of a shell.
It looks like a handwritten thanx note from Alex Winter.
The reverse says Greetings from ZappaMovieland
superimposed on a hazy photo of ...
Steve Vai? Thomas Nordegg?
I'm not sure, but they look old
and they're sitting in front of a bunch of guitars
which makes me think it's Mr Vai.
But I'm not sure.

Thanks ZappaMovieProject!
Neat to get the postcard.
I imagine others will chime in here.
The thing's alive!

I got a postcard (at my office) a couple of weeks ago. It had a "Dope: You Are What You Use" sticker on it.

Project Update #76: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA?
by Alex Winter
March, 21st, 2019

THEY ARE WHAT THEY IS

An update about a lotta shooting, cutting and crawling to the finish line! And more nuggets and reward news!

THAT WOULD BE THE END OF THAT

ਸਤ ਸ੍ਰੀ ਅਕਾਲ Freaks! We're in the home stretch! Been a titanic undertaking, but the end of editing this beast is in sight. The plan as it stands is to complete the edit over the next few months, then we go into a long and arduous sounds design and mix, followed by the roll out plan, which should see the film premiere coming some time between fall of this year, or early next. We'll post info as we have it! And for those of you who are getting rewards tied to the movie itself, as we get close we'll be sending word about the premiere screenings, as well as preparing the book, the soundtrack and all the goodies that required a finished movie to make!

THE BEST BAND YOU (N)EVER HEARD IN YOUR LIFE

At the end of my production process I always shoot a final burst of interviews, which is what we've been doing over the last couple of months. Here's some snapshots from a few of those!

THE VAULT NEVER STOPS

We've continued to mine the media we preserved throughout the editorial process, constantly discovering new things, and missing puzzle pieces of FZ's life and work. Here's an unseen outtake from a bygone interview at FZ's house from August of '85, with a hilarious and typically insightful exploration of the lyrics to 'Louie Louie,' a song Frank had a storied history with. https://youtu.be/kyrB_IC-qwA

Hope you enjoyed the update and more coming as we got it!

Sure glad Ian, Scott, and Ray were identified in the captions, because I wouldn't have recognized any of them.

I recognized Ray because I met him a few years back in Chico and I recognized Scott because he played with ZPZ a couple of years back and we sat right in front of him in the third row, but I did not have recognized Ian... :smoke:

Ian was in that Apostrophe/Over-Nite Sensation Classic Albums doc that came out 10 years ago or so and he looks more or less the same as he did then. Scott has been active on social media and been playing in a popular Nor Cal band in recent years called Mother Hips as well as that ZPZ run so he’s still very recognizable to me, and I saw Ray several times with ZPZ as well as that show in Chico Plook was referencing. I’ve followed him quite a bit on social media too, touring with Project/Object and whatnot.

I see that Alex and Keanu Reeves are set to start filming a new Bill & Ted movie. I hope it doesn’t slow down the doc although it should be kind of fun to see Bill & Ted at 50.

Project Update #77: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA?
by Alex Winter
April 29th, 2019

RIP Bruce B

Heartbroken today. I spent some very quality time with the truly amazing Mr. Bickford over the last few years. Grateful for that time and the work he did on the doc. Look forward to sharing it with everyone.

THAT WOULD (SOON) BE THE END OF THAT

Movie status, summer plans and a big mother of a vault nugget to tide you folks over...

WAY BACK A LONG TIME AGO!

And what a wondrous journey it's been. We started this project over four years ago, and are now locking up picture on the edit and moving into the mixing phase. It will still be some time before it's all done and in your hot little hands, but lion share of the labor to build this thing is nearly done. I'm turning reels over to our genius sound designer and mixer Lon Bender who will spend the next few months constructing soundscapes and making the whole thing sing! We will then look at our roll out and I'll let everyone know as soon as we do where and when it will world premiere.

Here's a couple shots of the process from where we're sitting:

Image
Editor Mike Nichols & Sound Designer/Supervisor Lon Bender in pre-mix.

Image
Here's Mike Nichols' edit timeline for the whole movie!

YOU CAN'T DO THAT ON STAGE ANYMORE!

For those of you who've been asking, yes I'm making another Bill and Ted movie and we'll be heading off shortly to shoot said madness. So this will be the last update for a little while. I'll be returning to finish the mix and color correct and all the graphics when I'm done, and when the sound team has had time to work to the tracks.

To tide you over, here's a particularly meaty and never before seen visual of Zappa going OFF, at the Pier in NYC in August of 1984. With the following wizards on stage:

Ike Willis, Ray White, Scott Thunes, Chad Wackerman, Allan Zavod & Bobby Martin

https://youtu.be/H9yTpROg8So

Hope you dug the clip! I'll post further news as I have it, about completion of the film and our plans for moving forward with the premiere and roll out!

Video clip redux

Sorry, we had an issue with the video. Kickstarter doesn't allow editing updates so here's the clip again and my blurb on it:

Project Update #80: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

WAIT A MINUTE!

Posted by Alex Winter
Oct 4, 2019

An update as we toil in the final stages to get this movie done and out to all of you!!

OUR BIZARRE RELATIONSHIP

It’s been a long long road to get to the finish line. I’ve really enjoyed meeting so many of you, both in person and online, and talking all things Zappa! I also owe a huge debt of gratitude to Joe Travers for his time and expertise, and letting me raid the vault on a regular basis. Here I am on a recent trip to pull masters to replace the offline media we’ve been cutting with for the last couple of years. It’s amazing to see the pristine footage. I can’t wait for you to see it too!

Image
AW in the new vault

Now that picture is locked, I’ve spent the last several months with our Trouper production team and our lawyers, painstakingly tracking and licensing the vast amount of visual and audio media that we’re using in this film. I was determined to construct the film primarily from original and unseen Zappa archival, which requires an enormous amount of labor to be able to use all that footage. And use it we did!

Now we’re closing out that process and beginning the work of color correction and the laborious sound mix, all of which will take us to New Year. At the same time, we’ve begun the process of making the Zappa book that many of you have ordered. It will be a treasure trove of imagery; some from the film and some from the archives, and all previously unseen. I can’t tell you yet who we got to write the text for the book, but it’s a superstar Zappa expert and I’m really honored to have him. Will divulge soon!

Thanks again for everyone’s patience. It’s extremely important to get this film right and not skimp on any part of the process. And that takes time. But I’m thrilled with the movie we made and excited to get it out into the world. Once we get closer to finishing post-production we will being our roll out plans, and I’ll let everyone know what we’re doing soon as we know!

And what good is an update without some Zappa gold from the vault?
