Several people have been expecting a video/audio snippet. My guess is this is just an announcement.

Update #82Backers only

CAN'T WAIT TILL THE REST OF THE PEOPLE ALL OVER THE WORLD...

Alex WinterCreator
January 15, 2020

The movie is COMPLETE and headed to its world premiere at our favorite film festival in March, baby! Here we discuss the deets, the ever-bountiful vault and info on future events for backers!

GET OUT YOUR JAZZ DISCHARGE PARTY HATS!

The movie was accepted to the great SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. I’ll announce the screening dates as soon as I have them! I couldn’t be more thrilled; this is both a movie and music festival and draws a huge crowd of music lovers. Please come join us if you can. And thanks to Rolling Stone for this cool piece on the premiere!

Of course now we will also be scheduling the other backer screenings in the different cities around the country. We are working in collaboration with the mighty Alamo Draft House who know how to put on a great show, and I can’t wait to meet all of you at those screenings! Look for announcements of those dates to follow the SXSW premiere, as well as additional film festivals worldwide!

The coffee table book is being made as we speak; stuffed with never before seen images and the text being written for us by the legendary David Fricke, with design by the great Mike Mesker. It’s going to be amazing! The soundtrack is also in the works, with original album cover art being created by the genius Cal Schenkel. We’re not f*cking around! And all information on the dates for those and the other remaining backer rewards will go out as soon as we have them!

WE GOTTA COME UP WITH SOME NEW SHIT!

Here's a cool little thing from the vault; a contact sheet from the photo shoot of FZ and Zubin Mehta for their concert together with the L.A. Philharmonic Orchestra at UCLA in May of 1970. And here's what Rolling Stone had to say about it, courtesy of the good folks at the Zappa Wiki.

I WANT TO THANK YOU!

I know it’s been said many times over the years along this journey, but I can’t thank all of you enough for the support. Together we saved the vault and told the story! The preservation mission was a huge feat in itself that took two full years of labor and cost a small fortune, but allowed us to see an enormous amount of precious and endangered media in Frank’s vault preserved and professionally archived. And now the story has been told and will soon go out into the world! And I’m SO excited for you all to see it. We worked very hard to craft a narrative that conveys the essence of FZ's life and work. Hopefully many more movies and other projects will be made to honor Frank, as it’s a vast and complex legacy.

But again it's all because of you folks. And it's so greatly appreciated. I love the interaction we've had along the way so far and the awesome stuff you guys send our way. Like this portrait of Zappa by the great artist Eddie Ruscha, which is on the wall at the studio of his father, artist Ed Ruscha. Keep it coming!

That’s enough out of me. More news soon!

Alex Winter’s Frank Zappa Doc ‘Zappa’ Premieres at South by Southwest
“This film is by far the most intimate and expansive look into the innovative life of Frank Zappa,” his son, Ahmet, tells Rolling Stone

Filmmaker Alex Winter's documentary 'Zappa,' about Frank Zappa (pictured above, right, with engineer Kerry McNabb), will premiere at this year's South by Southwest festival.Yoram Kahana/Zappa Trust

A little more than four years after filmmaker Alex Winter started making a documentary about rock iconoclast and classical composer Frank Zappa’s life, the movie — simply titled Zappa — will premiere at South by Southwest. The festival will take place in Austin, Texas, between March 13th and March 22nd.

Although Zappa has been the subject of many films, Winter’s movie is unique in that it covers the artist’s entire life; he had access to the Zappa family’s vault of uncirculated and rarely seen footage. The film will include commentary from Frank, his wife Gail, his one-time “stunt guitarists” Steve Vai and Mike Keneally, Mothers of Invention members Ruth Underwood, Ian Underwood and Bunk Gardner, and GTOs member Pamela Des Barres, among many others. Winter, who is perhaps more popularly known as “Bill” from the Bill and Ted movies, has also made several award-winning documentaries. He sifted through hundreds of hours of footage to make the picture.

“Zappa was an extremely complicated and brilliant man who had as many detractors as he had fans,” Winter tells Rolling Stone. “I hope that our audience finds him as captivating and significant an American artist as I do.”

“Alex had unfettered access to everything in our vault and total creative freedom to make this movie, unlike other filmmakers,” Zappa’s son, Ahmet, says. “This film is by far the most intimate and expansive look into the innovative life of Frank Zappa, narrated by Frank in his own words. It’s quite unbelievable what Alex has achieved. This is the definitive Frank Zappa documentary.”

Ahmet says he thinks fans of Frank will especially like seeing all the home movies that the family held onto. Some of these include films from high school of Frank with Don Van Vliet (later known as Captain Beefheart), rehearsals at the Gerrick theater and personal documentation of his struggles toward the end of his life; Zappa died of prostate cancer in 1993.

“When I first began the preservation work on the vault, I discovered hours and hours of never-before-heard interviews that Frank had stored down there from throughout his life,” Winter says. “Many of these were just Frank and his friends shooting the shit in his basement office. He’s a great storyteller and I was able to have him essentially narrate the story of his own life. Meaning he would begin an anecdote in 1969, continue the thought in 1980 and finish the same story in 1991. It allowed us to create a kind of kaleidoscopic perspective of Frank in time, not unlike his music.”

Winter thinks the intimacy of the film will stand out. “It’s not your standard album-to-album music doc,” the filmmaker says. “It’s really an in-depth examination of an artist’s life, using mostly Zappa’s own words and media from his personal archives. The film is filled with surprises for fans, but I think they will be most struck by the intimacy and a real sense of who Zappa actually was.”

But does the film satisfy the hope that Gail had for it shortly before her death in 2015? Earlier that year, she told Rolling Stone she hoped the doc would answer one question: “Why the fuck would anyone want to be a composer?” Winter says it does.

“I realize now that one of the reasons she allowed me the access to tell his story when she had refused so many others before is that my pitch to her was for a film that specifically looked at Frank as one of our great 20th century composers, mistakenly defined as primarily a rock guitar player,” he says. “He was an artist who was often at odds with both the times and himself. So the film absolutely examines what it means to be an artist and specifically a composer in America at the time that Frank was alive, with all that was going on politically and culturally.”

Little update about the movie touring festivals around the world, other events coming up and more FZ goodies if you missed out!

WE WOULD PLAY IT AGAIN 'N' AGAIN 'N' AGAIN!

The SXSW premiere is coming up and if anyone is coming to Austin you can find info on those screenings here, as well as the panel with several of the key players on our team. Come along if you’re in town! We’ll also be playing other great festivals around the world before our general release and the next one is the prestigious CPH:DOX in Copenhagen! We’re working on the distribution plan now so we’ll post news on that and other festival screenings as we have it. And of course those who chose the Hollywood premiere are aware and news is going out on the dates for the other private backer screenings that I will also be attending. I look forward to meeting everyone and discussing all things FZ! As we told everyone, the digital and dvd copies of the movie will go out once we’re into the general distribution, along with the book and the soundtracks! We are so proud and in love with this movie and can't wait for you all to see it!

I just saw that SXSW was cancelled due to the coronavirus. So maybe the Copenhagen showing will be the world premiere now?

A QUICK WORD ABOUT COVID-19 AND OUR ROLLOUT

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alexwinter/frank-zappa/posts/2781288

Alex Winter Creator
March 10, 2020

Hey all. I hope everyone is staying safe out there as the world deals with the expanding Covid-19 health crisis. There are much more important issues at play here obviously, but I wanted to leave a quick note about how our film is being impacted so people are aware. The SXSW festival cancelled, which prevented our film from having its world premiere there. We are currently scheduled to screen at CPH:DOX in Copenhagen on March 19, unless they too cancel. And there are other festivals around the world that have accepted the film, which we can't name until they officially announce, and at this time we aren't sure if they will continue as planned or cancel. Likewise, as Los Angeles is in a state of emergency, we had to postpone the Hollywood premiere and other backer screenings until such time that we can safely hold these screenings.

It's very frustrating for us, as I'm sure it is for all of you. But safety is most important and the health crisis at hand is a very serious one. Wishing everyone the best at this time, and I will post more news as we have it.

Many thanks,

I just heard (Folha de São Paulo newspaper) SXSW will stream movies online... Does it apply to Zappa?

I doubt it. It seems to be limited to interviews and festival stuff.

Hey all, I very much hope everyone is safe and hunkered down. Unsurprisingly, the movie's rollout is on hold until business resumes. We will post an update as soon as we have any kind of conclusive word on when we can resume our process. In the meantime we're continuing to work on what we can in this climate, which is primarily finishing the Zappa Book and the soundtrack and EP rewards for those who got them. They're looking amazing! We hope to be able to get those out to people as soon as they've been printed and mastered, provided there's enough infrastructure available to ship them.

More as we have it, and the most important thing is that we all get through this challenging time.

Be well,

Alex

I just wanted to check in quickly and say that everything continues to move very slowly given the pandemic. I will post our distribution and roll out plan as soon as we have it locked in. Hopefully that will be soon. Until then just know we're doing everything we can, which is very little given the circumstances. And a reminder that we don't own the film, our financiers do, so we don't have the right to stream the film in any form. That's something we can get into once our distributor is on board.

Thankfully we have been busy with the book and soundtrack for those who are getting those, and they both came out great!

Thanks for your patience, it's a very frustrating situation for all concerned but it is what it is.

Anon,

Alex
