WTF? Didn't she recently tell that she took a few hundred $ from her Valley Girl money for an abortion at an age of 18?

Here is the whole story in graphic detail for those of you who may have missed it a couple years back:

This puts a fresh and honest perspective on the inner workings of the Zappa household. Remember all those magazine article and interviews 80s and early 90s painting FZ as a semi "conservative" all American dad? This shoots a lot of holes in that image. Funny how these articles never touched on FZ's infidelity (groupies at the breakfast table, STDs etc.), workaholism, or severe addiction to legal substances. The response that MZ portrays her parents having to the news of her abortion sounds like the quintessential hippy dippy reaction, which is disappointing. Most of this is old news to a lot of us, but I feel that its important for it to be here to keep an objective view of FZ.

My brother got his print back from the framers. Shown here cropped since I'm guessing he doesn't want the # shown on the internet.

Why is this qualified to be considered the "honest" perspective?

Objective view? He's dead. What do I need to be objective about?
He had severe legal addictions? Oh. Unlike today with our healthy internet and television addictions. Cell phone addictions. Addictions to energy. To money.
Is anyone going to give enough of a shit to publicly analyze/critique our personal choices after we've died? ugh. Who are we to judge FZ?

That's none of our business is it?

Is it?

How bad society is, or people are now is a moot point. FZ frequently railed against the addictions of other. This certainly opens him to the criticism of his own. However, I'm NOT judging him (certainly no puritan myself) just pointing out some things I do not feel were portrayed accurately in the media. Seems with GZ being gone the Z Kids have been more open about things, thus bringing certain truths to light. It's honest because it is coming from a family member who was there, MZ. As far as it being any of our business, that pretty much went out the window when MZ made this very public announcement. She clearly wanted people to know about this. No the picture nor myself are qualified to establish any of this. Just something I noticed.

A couple examples of what I was referring to in my original post. Everything is open to interpretation. Personally I get a vibe of painting FZ in a more conventional, mainstream way than he was previously thought of.

FZ & MZ on Late Night w/ David Letterman 1982:
https://youtu.be/2TZk1gYj2xo?t=134

FZ & Zkids on Nite Life 1986:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nK5q4vY3-Uo

Don't get me wrong here, I worship the ground that FZ walked on. For some reason I got the image in my mind that he sheltered his kids more than what MZ portrayed in her video; it just surprised me. I'm going to leave it at that.

I continue to be a full on fan of FZ's music. I disagree with a lot of what he said and am only marginally interested in his political/social commentary. A lot of it was just bullshit.

FZ had just about the least amount of bullshit of any "rock star" out there. Sure, he had some bullshit. But "a lot"? I don't think that's fair.

FZ was right on, time and time again, about the music industry, American politics, American television/media, and the general lack of an appreciation of culture in America. He was also generally fair and honest with his fans. He never coasted.
Here's a lengthy interview from 1984 where FZ seems to have run completely out of bullshit.

(1) "If you end up with a boring miserable life because you listened to your mom, your dad, your teacher, your priest, or some guy on television telling you how to do your shit, then you deserve it." - FZ

What is often wrong with the world is perpetuated by children being brain washed by their parents. Who a child ends up being in terms of their unique physical self and the unique situation they're born into is not of their choosing, so if they end up being brain washed, how is it that they deserve that? People who break the mould are exceptions, not the rule. It's mould breakers who change the world and eventually others wake up and tune in.

(2) I saw that video where FZ was celebrating the fall of the Soviet Union. Yes it was fucked - the 1917 revolution in Russia was subverted a long, long time ago in its early stages by Stalin and his cronies. Meanwhile, the cess pit in the West grinds ever more bleakly and FZ celebrates the failure of an attempt to do something different. We should be trying to find ways of moving on from this shit heap not sneering at the failures of those who have tried.

(3) He was basically a conservative. He benefited significantly form the status quo and ultimately wasn't that driven to change it. He spent most of his time working on his music - he didn't have enough spare time away from that to produce a lot more than not very illuminating political one liners. Let's face it, he wasn't a revolutionary by any stretch.

(4) All that puerile humour, that achieved what?

In the American media's war against our consciousness he was a revolutionary. For sure. And brave. And now you want to strip any heroism away from him? I don't know. In a way he was on the front lines over here. Maybe you can't grasp that because you are not here.

(4) What did it achieve? Made some sad people laugh. Broke through some sick American repression that you might not totally understand.

He's talking about any unworthy authority figure. That's aimed mostly at Americans who are likely quite capable of healing themselves. He's trying to inspire people to not be victimized. We have a lot of hidden child abuse here. Mental, physical, spiritual. Some of the abuse is considered normal parenting!

I don't need to defend him. I accept that you think he is often full of shit. In the American cultural wars he's a hero. Listen to what he left us!

I love his music. And yes, he did a lot for me on a personal level at one time and I'm not trying to take that away from him. But his politics were all over the place.

And don't start bringing "grasp" and "understanding" into it if you want to stay friends.

Project Update #70: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA?
by Alex Winter

Production Diary entry

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Hola Freaks! A very quick, down and dirty update from the wilds of Bruce Bickford's home studio compound in Seattle.

We just shot an amazing interview with the amazing Mr. B! Making art and talking FZ.

I just wanted to show some images from this great day. Most of our interviews will be filmed later in the year, but I'm grabbing a few select interviews early in the process to work with in edit.

And don't fret, a proper update is coming very soon!

Anon!

Alex

Project Update #71: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

HEY THERE, PEOPLE!

Checking in from deep inside the doc-making machine! More rewards, movie update and another nugget of pure gold from the vault!

A TOKEN OF HIS EXTREME (GRATITUDE)!

Как дела, Freaks?! On the Kickstarter front we have undergone an overhaul, brought in more team support and are kicking up the whole process a few notches to get everyone squared away! This is a big campaign with a lot of backers, a lot of rewards and a lot of moving parts, so thanks so much for everyone’s patience! R i n g tones and wallpapers are heading out the door, as are the extra Groening print for those who got these rewards. Here’s a snippet of one of the wallpapers: Zappa at the Whisky a Go Go in 1968, an FZ era that is near and dear to my heart
Image
FZ at Whisky a Go-Go

So hope you enjoy the booty and thanks again, we couldn’t be doing what we’re doing without your participation and generosity. So much material was saved, preserved and archived and that’s all on you! Which leads me to…

OH GOD I AM THE AMERICAN DREAM!

That would make an excellent title for the doc, tho too much inside baseball methinks. The movie is in the early stages of editorial, and it’s going great! The vault material is a treasure trove we're diving into to lay out FZ’s story as it’s never been told. Me and editor Mike Nichols are bashing away and hope to have a first pass at the whole animal within the next six months, with the movie done and out hopefully by Spring or Summer of 2019. I’ll keep everyone posted on the progress and here we are slaving away:

A ZAPPA AFFAIR!

Even though our preservation work is completely done, we're still discovering new gems as we edit the movie. As some of you may know, The Berkeley Symphony Orchestra performed a series of concerts called A Zappa Affair,

Here's a little of FZ clowning around with the beautiful ballet dancers.

Hope you dug it! And watch this space for more doc news as we rumble along down that road!

Project Update #72: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

CIVILIZATION PHAZE IV
Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A quickie update in which we hoist our collective bodies up from the Zappa trenches with movie news, reward fun and extractions from the vault of a decidedly Synclavier nature!

THE JELLY & PAINT ON THE 40 WATT BULB!

مرحبا freaks! We have been very busy on all fronts Zappa. The documentary is roaring along, with almost 1000 hours of mostly unseen archival footage to work with and an incredible, decades-spanning epic story to tell! It is still early in the editorial process, but I am thrilled with the progress so far. I’ll have more to talk about in the new year, but suffice to say we are up to our ears in beautiful footage and treating it all with the love and reverence it deserves!

But it’s not all about the movie, it’s also about the rewards, which we continue to organize and get into your hands! My production offices are now doubling as a bustling shipping center, and there's more cool stuff to come!

Here’s our team painstakingly mounting the film strips for those backers who got ‘em. These are all original 16mm frames from Zappa’s vault, and you will love them!

SAMPLES FROM HELL!

There’s a ton of great stuff in the vault from FZ’s seminal work on the Synclavier. This little batch of clips is from August 30, 1985 -- Frank records and then builds a vocal sample patch on the Synclavier, employing some very cool stereo effects.

Hope you dig those as much as I do! And as always, more anon!

RAISIN' IT UP, WAXIN’ IT DOWN

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

An update in which we barrel along the road of making the film, and a timely nugget from the vault.

DONG WORK FOR YUDA

Hoe gaat het met jou, freaks? All is well here, immersed in editorial, and scouring our ballot guides for the upcoming vote. Like all of you, right?? With so much archival to log and identify, it’s been a gratifying, but enormous task to wrap our arms around this footage as we build the edit. Happy to report that we are in a great place, and taking our time to get it right!

Most of our work is editorial as the vast majority of the film will be archival footage from the vault. We are shooting a small selection of FZ insiders as we go. This past week we had the honor of interviewing the mighty Steve Vai https://www.vai.com/ at his home in Los Angeles. Aside from being a musical genius with an extraordinary career, and having profound insight into working with FZ, Vai also provided the air guitar licks in Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey and the music for the Reaper Rap, so he and I go way back. And yes he will be returning for the air guitar on B&T3.

Here’s some shots of our gang at work. Including maestro DP Anghel Decca, http://www.angheldecca.com/ who also shot our Gail interviews and a lot of other work with me over the years.

CHECK OUT THE POLITICS PRACTICED BY THIS OAF

With the big midterm vote coming up, GOTV is on everyone’s mind. And we all know FZ was a huge activist for voter registration and the importance of a citizenry that takes part in the election process.

This vault clip is from the Today Show in 1988. Zappa interviewed with MTV exec Lee Masters. It's classic FZ.

https://youtu.be/EtX8ij_4mEg

Hope you dug it! Next update will include some snaps of our upcoming Vault Tours rewards. We have backers coming in from all over the world and we have a great time in store for them!

Project Update #74: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

JAMBON, JAMBON, THANK YOU OH THANK YOU, YOU'RE REALLY TOO KIND!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Backer tours here in sunny LA and amazing audio from the vault while in the thick of the documentary-making madness!

IN THE RECTORY BASEMENT!

Sveiki freaks! This past week we spent a couple of lovely days taking a select group of backers down into the vault, on the road around Hollywood to FZ haunts, inside FZ’s very own Rolls Royce and over to the ZFT, where our fabulous group from around the globe was able to get up close and personal with many of the art pieces, photos and other artifacts from the original UMRK and FZ office.

And big thanks to Ahmet, Diva and Vaultmeister Joe for taking part and being so cool and generous with all of us! It’s always a thrill for me to meet the backers in person, share Zappa stories and favorite tracks and discuss what me and the team are doing on the doc! The Kickstarter was hard work and it’s a lot to manage, but I LOVE the community of backers from all over the world and we couldn’t have saved the vault without you guys. So it’s been a really special journey for all of us here on the team.

Now here’s some of you enjoying the tour:

Image

Backers at the ZFT

Alex & Ahmet bore everyone to tears.

All glory be to FZ.

On the tour bus to the vault.

Snapping FZ's ride.

Another great group!

I HEARD THAT SOME SHEIK HAS BOUGHT NEW JERSEY LAST WEEK!

While we all enjoy the personal and background archival media, we crave new audio! So here’s something we unearthed in the vault; FZ and co performing Sleeping In A Jar, live at the Civic Center in Trenton New Jersey, April 29th, 1975.

The band is choice:

FZ- Guitar

Tom Fowler- Bass

Terry Bozzio- Drums

Napoleon Murphy Brock- Sax

Bruce Fowler- Trombone

Denny Walley- Slide Guitar

George Duke- Keyboards

Beefheart is in the band during this time, but not on this track. I love the energy of this performance, and am fairly certain you will too!

Hope you dug the track! Next update will include a really juicy surprise! Meantime, back to the editorial salt mines for me!
