Project Update #58: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA?

by Alex Winter

WELL, THE YEAR WENT ROLLIN' BY, YEAH!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Hey Freaks!

It’s been a year since we completed the Kickstarter and got started saving the vault! Most of the available rewards are out, with a few more coming to you soon. Plus, our preservation is getting close to the end, and more juicy surprises are still coming from the vault!

I want my Chrissy, 'n I want my beer!

Many of you have received your mystery bags and other goodies, and we love all the photos and tweets you sent us that showed your appreciation for the rewards.

Believe me, a lot of love (and sweat!) have gone into those rewards and we want you happy! For those of you who still haven’t received your rewards, just know that the art is not all in yet and has to ship with your other rewards. Most those will go out in the next few weeks.

And of course the rewards related to the movie, like the DVD and book, won’t go out until the movie is done. As we’ve explained: First we save the vault, then we tell the story.

I’m beginning to put the film together now, as we wind down the preservation work, so it will be a while before the doc itself is done. But it’s all moving!

Do your job & do it right!

We’re getting it done! The preservation labor has been intense, but we’re in the final stages, with just a few months left to go until our work is done, and all endangered material will be museum-grade archived! So hat’s off to all our backers for the support and making this happen! In the last update I talked about the challenges of the process, specifically the audio preservation. And who better to give us a demo on the work itself, than Vaultmeister Joe?

So, we stuck a camera in poor Joe’s face again and got a few choice words…

https://youtu.be/HUIRywmT1iI

And since I know many of you are like me, and want all the granular details, here's a quick piece of Joe at work with the tape layoff. If gear and process isn't your bag, skip on along to the next section :)

https://youtu.be/rpoKSfkZVAM

The Amazing Mr. Nordegg!

Below are a couple of clips from the vault that were both shot in 1982 by the great Thomas Nordegg, the Viennese manager, artist and guitar and keyboard tech for FZ and many others. In his own words:

"I was Peter Wolfs manager and the keyboard tech for him and Tommy Mars in the band with Terry Bozzio and Patrick O'hara, Chad Wackerman Vinnie Colaiuta. Most unbelievable band. I did at least six to eight tours videotaping the shows with the feed from the camera going directly to the recording truck so they printed it directly with the audio feed. A lot of that stuff Frank used, like the Video from Hell which was all my footage. Besides Frank I worked with Warren Cuccurullo, Terry Bozzio, Missing Persons (from day one until ground zero) and then fifteen years with Warren. And meanwhile a lot of other gigs. I worked with Jimmy Page once, With Toto I did a world tour, The Pretenders. Tears For Fears, Social Distortion I did quite a lot. Yngwie Malmsteen, Mike Keneally. But for the last few years I worked with Steve."

(This is taken from from Nordegg’s interview at the official Steve Vai site.)

CalArts

FZ observes and coaches pianists practicing his scores. Sections of Pedro's Dowry and Sinister Footwear were adapted for two pianos.

https://youtu.be/Se6FZxPmZjA

Unfortunately, the pianists names are unknown and it’s unclear who did the adaptation. Any backers with more info, send it on in!

Genoa

Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris, Genoa, Italy. 7/5/1982
This specific clip shows FZ playing guitar during a performance of "Easy Meat."
The set-list from that awesome show can be found here.

https://youtu.be/aYoI_OYl4n0

Hope you dug the clips!

More in the next update, and more news on our progress on all fronts!

Anon!

Alex Winter

The other one should show up monday. I think that one is the poster. This one was the shirt and swag. Up til now, I've been wondering why people aren't showing pix of the stuff. Well, there is alot of swag! I'll try to post some kinda pic eventually, but I gotta run.

I was really surprised how much cool shit I got. CD's, DVD's, posters, photos, handwritten letters, license plate, wires from the recording studio, keychains, pencils, poncho, badges, stickers and much more.

I was already fixing up my office at work (put in a drop ceiling), so I went out and got a frame for the new poster right away! :)

I meant it in a good way, and you turn it into something bad. Sigh.

My backer box showed up in the mail yesterday!
And it was a large box, like 12"x20"x24".
There were a lot of surprises.
Yes, the t-shirt,
yes the poncho,
some stickers and buttons.
Also, a tote bag.
But there's a Frank Zappa 200 Motels keychain which made me laugh.
And a chunk of UMRK cable.
They threw in sealed copies of
The Yellow Shark on cassette,
Imaginary Diseases on cd and,
The Torture Never Stops on dvd (NTSC).
There's a 'zappa' patch,
an 'F-Zappa' license plate from 'the show me state' made out of metal and encased in shrink wrap while still being suitable for mounting on your car, or your headboard or, whatever,
and a Honker Home Video unsharpened pencil made out of actual wood with the 818-Pumpkin phone number and the Hollywood POBox # on it.

There's also a 'Mystery bag' manila envelope that has a number of individual facsimile items.
Several vintage photo post cards,
many sticker type things including (but not limited to) a concertgebouw concert ticket, backstage passes, a 10-1-74 Basel foldout concert poster, and a couple art pieces that were clearly originally made by FZ.
And several setlists backed by a sheet listing expenses (incl insurance, bmi/ascap, lighting, "poster boys", and food), for 'outside salt palace'. Funny.

Mine arrived today. And since I bought the $150 backer level (you obviously bought the next level up from mine), most of the items I received are the same as the above. Only, I didn't receive the poncho or a piece of UMRK cable and they included a Joe's Menage CD (not Imaginary Diseases) and an original Barking Pumpkin Studio Tan cassette (not The Yellow Shark)...

Very cool indeed!

I got mine. I haven't really looked at it all. There's a Buffalo cd, Freak Out cassette, TTNS dvd, an Old Masters large booklet, and what I believe is a Z-pack. Not sure as I never got one back in the day. And all the other knick knack stuff.

Overall, I'm glad I participated. As evidenced by Chicago 78, there's still great stuff to be mined from the vaults, not to mention what video exists.
