Project Update #61: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

Kickstarter

L.A. IN THE SUMMER OF 2017!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A shout-out from the depths of the vault and more goodies from therein!

Buenos dias, freaks! As I’ve said, we’re winding up the preservation work through the summer, so not a lot to report. Currently we’re waiting for the last batches to be complete, then we’ll go through it all and start to close this up!

IN THE RECTORY BASEMENT!

I wanted to give the floor to one of the hardest-working members of our team, J Warner. J has been on this cockeyed caravan from the beginning, dug into the bowels of the bunker alongside Vaultmeister Joe, helping to oversee the painstaking preservation and cataloging of all the media. He’s not just an amazing talent, but a lifelong Zappa devotee, and an all-around awesome fella. But I’ll let him speak for himself:

https://youtu.be/NHaP7SlWxWM

DO-DO-DUN TO-TO…. DORO!

Today’s vault batch comes from the cameras of the famous Austrain production duo known as DoRo; named after the founders Rudi Dolezal and Hannes Rossacher. More on them here. I included a few gems we discovered amongst the filmed footage in the vault. This stuff is really special, and gives an amazing, fly-on-the-wall sense of the band and tours around this time.

Concert Prep. Filmed at Tower Theater, Upper Darby, PA in 1980, at the sound check.

https://youtu.be/PNe0qtWJ-pc

I gotta think about this. Filmed in the dressing room for the same show and date above.

https://youtu.be/VUWUlNodK4w

Set List. Filmed as above. Featuring L.Shankar, Arthur Barrow, Tommy Mars and Ike Willis.

https://youtu.be/InEmeL9XIds

Coffee shop. Shot in a coffee shop during the above tour. This one came to us without sound. We may find the sound separately down the road, but we very well may not. This is old stuff folks!

https://youtu.be/r70NVZCKeuA

Hope you enjoyed the clips! Once the final batches are in we’ll go through those and send out more archival updates as we get ‘em! And when we have this wrapped up and catalogued we’ll set about getting the doc done. Very exciting!

Anon,

DELIGHTFUL LITTLE MORSELS

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Archival StatRep, Doc progress and some gold from the vault!

Guten Tag, freaks! We’re closing in on the end of the preservation/archival phase of this project and easing our way into the documentary phase. Very exciting! And as we wind it down, we continue to find unknown nuggets of gold in the vault!

WE'RE COMING TO THE BEGINNING OF A NEW ERA!

This past week we moved the archival system from the vault to my Trouper production offices, as we transition from preserving the material to logging it all for hand off to the editors and starting the documentary!

Image

So what are we doing? At this stage we’re mostly finishing up with the remaining video, 3/4" U-Matic videotapes and Betamax formats, which includes baking the older material and then archiving through our system. And when we’re done with this batch, WE ARE DONE!

LET'S SAY YOU WERE A TRAVELING ROCK AND ROLL BAND!

Wanted to share some recent gems we uncovered from the video preservation work. These are clips from FZ on the road in Europe in 1982. Starting in France and ending with some glorious live footage in Germany. All from the great Thomas Nordegg’s VHS archives.

FZ Flag Photo and FZ Industrial Photo

Shot on 5/16/1982 in Paris, France. FZ poses for photographs with an American flag and rummages around an industrial area looking for places to shoot.

https://youtu.be/mj75ZbzzTUs

https://youtu.be/M7KPT6c7_j4

Prank Beer, Pre Show Pranks & Tour Toilet

Off we go to Fréjus, France, 5/29/1982. As we find Nordegg wandering around the venue during soundcheck, with John Smothers making practical jokes and FZ directing Thomas to the toilet. Good times.

https://youtu.be/iffWKx0SjSU

https://youtu.be/_VqW5cWpqek

https://youtu.be/tXkJDHo2Hos

Bobby Brown Performance

Last but not least, we travel to Schüttorf , Germany on 6/5/1982 for highlights of a performance of "Bobby Brown", one of my favorite FZ tunes.

https://youtu.be/sl1ogI1zPng

That’s all she wrote! We’ll keep you updated as we make our way through this phase and onto the next, and continue to share materials as we find ‘em!

Update: 63

HELLO HELLO (CAN'T YOU TURN IT UP ANY MORE THAN THAT?)

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

Checking in with our backers so you don’t think we fell down the archival rabbit hole and died. Joe T on a video baking frenzy and some rare outtakes from the archives!

Maalin wacan, freaks! Haven’t updated for a while because there ain’t been much to update! We’re digging through the last vestiges of the preservation work, waiting on the remaining batches to return and putting together all the digital vault pass material for those of you who have so patiently been awaiting that reward. It was difficult for our small team to do until we had the lion share of archive to work with. Now we do so off we go!

BEEN CHECKIN' OUT THE NEWS UNTIL MY EYEBALLS FAIL TO SEE!

As last reported, the venerable Vaultmeister Joe has been here at Trouper Productions working away, and mostly on video materials. A lot of this stuff is old and needed to be baked and Joe is doing that baking himself, right here on our premises. Just like a Keebler elf (not really but kinda).

Image

Image

Joe is not one for self-promotion so he’ll probably kill me for sharing this, but I really dug a recent interview with him: https://www.udiscovermusic.com/stories/ ... ltmeister/ where he talks about all his great work keeping Zappa’s work alive!

BE IN MY VIDEO!

We found some really cool previously unseen (as far as I know) video from the ‘We Don’t Mess Around” shoot in Germany in 1978. Zappa rented the big top of Circus Krone to rehearse and some of this was videotaped by the Bayerischer Rundfunk and aired on German TV.

Here’s some info on the lineup, culled from the indispensable geniuses at Globalia:

FZ—lead guitar/vocals Ike Willis—guitar/vocals
Denny Walley—slide guitar/vocals
Tommy Mars—keyboards/accordion/vocals
Peter Wolf—keyboards
Ed Mann—percussion/vocals
Arthur Barrow—bass/vocals
Vinnie Colaiuta—drums/seal call

https://youtu.be/k0kO5srJcBY

https://youtu.be/KHP-C31JDbM

https://youtu.be/n4_Z8JmaFqc

https://youtu.be/pHhCIg6Rb84

https://youtu.be/EJd5vHdWICk

Das sind alle meine Freaks! Will keep working on the vault passes and when the next and final batches are in we’ll be sure to share some of that gold with your good selves!

GET A LITTLE!
Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

AN AUDIO-ONLY UPDATE BY POPULAR REQUEST!
नमस्त, Freaks! Going to keep this short and sweet. We’re still awaiting last batches to come in. Though one piece of very cool news to share is that we are saving the last original 35mm print of Baby Snakes!

https://emails.kickstarter.com/mpss/c/6 ... 0j-2BHzupj

That’s going through the preservation process as we speak! But that’s not why I’m here. We’ve received some messages from backers over the last month asking us to share more audio in the updates, so I wanted to comply poste-haste.

ENEMAS, BANDITS AND GUITAR SOLOS!!
What we’ve got for you is a guitar solo from The Illinois Enema Bandit,

https://emails.kickstarter.com/mpss/c/6 ... Lx6VWE9RUZ

recorded live sometime in 1980. It was remixed by FZ at the UMRK from an 8-Track 1" Master Tape. FZ hand-selected this solo to mix, for what, we'll never know. It was transferred from a tape that contained no information as to where and when it was recorded. but it was mixed in the late 80's. I’m sure all of you diehard fans will be able to identify the info once you get your hands on it!

https://emails.kickstarter.com/mpss/c/6 ... uohxwr3Oo3

Hope you dug it! And for those awaiting the last rewards, much work is going into compiling audio and video for the digital vault pass, Cal Schenkel is busy signing prints, and the mighty Matt Groening got in touch last week to say his homemade goodies are about done. So hang in there, we’re close to getting all of this out to all of you!
Onward!

Project Update #65: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

THE ENIGMATICALLY MYSTERIOUS RDNZL!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A ONE-GEM UPDATE BECAUSE WE LOVE YOU!

ဟယ်လို, Freaks! As the last of the preservation work rolls out, we’re gearing ourselves up for the doc work. This work took us longer than expected, but obviously it couldn’t be rushed, and there was no clear way of knowing exactly how much content there was to preserve and archive, how many rolls of film in each can (answer: much more than estimated) and how many three-quarter video tapes would work and how many were too far gone (answer: the surgical genius Joe Travers rescued them all).

But save the vault we have, and we have because of all of you!

YOU SAY REDUNZL, I SAY RDNZL!!

This is one of my favorite FZ tracks, maybe because it’s a genius piece of ornate composition, or maybe just because it has the brilliant Ruth Underwood on it and Ruth can do no wrong. As many of you fans know, the exact meaning and inspiration of the title and the song itself has been debated for years, with no absolute answer that I know. Part of what I love about FZ; just enjoy the music and moment and don’t get bogged down in logic and answers is what so much of his music says to me.

With that I want to give you a taste of one of the coolest Nordegg pieces we found in the vault. This has been heard, but never seen before. It’s RDNZL, being performed in Dusseldorf, Germany, May 22nd, 1982. Ruth isn’t on this of course, as she wasn’t touring with FZ by this time but the personnel ain’t shabby: FZ, Steve Vai, Ray White, Scott Thunes, Chad Wackerman, Ed Mann, Tommy Mars, Bobby Martin

This excerpt is from an epic, 15-minute performance of the song, which includes a FZ-conducted improv and will be fully available as a Digital Vault Pass reward, for those of you who have that coming!

https://youtu.be/7umQ2MrJtzM

Hope you dug it! More news soon on the end of the vault work and the beginning of the flick work!

Project Update #66: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA?
By Alex Winter

Kickstarter

OH YES!!!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

A new year, a new movie and a super historic 60’s nugget!

Happy New Year Freaks! I can officially announce (to the backers anyway) that the documentary process has begun! The editors are coming aboard, the drives are being plugged into our system and the first phase of production will now commence: sifting through the masses of FZ gold that we spent the last year and change preserving and building a timeline so we can shape it all into a big, juicy narrative epic documentary for your enjoyment!

We will make a more formal announcement soon, but meantime I wanted to celebrate with a little something we found down in the vault:

OH NO!

This clip is from the very last performance of the original Mothers of Invention in Ottawa CA 1969. I can only share a very short taste of it, so don’t start throwing digital tomatoes at your screen, but it’s super rare and it made my heart skip a beat and I’m sure it will for you too!

https://youtu.be/PIx5cEVZCkY

Hope you dug it. And can’t wait to share more news on the film as we roll into production!

Great Point boosts EFM slate with Frank Zappa doc, retired superheroes comedy (exclusive)
By Tom Grater 6 February 2018
Image

London-based Great Point Media has bolstered its sales slate ahead of this month’s European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin.

The company has picked up Zappa, Alex Winter’s upcoming documentary about the pioneering musician Frank Zappa. Currently in pre-production, the feature is from Glen Zipper, the Oscar-winning producer of American Football doc Undefeated.

Director Winter is known for his acting roles as Ted in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and its sequel Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey. His previous filmmaking credits include docs Downloaded and Deep Web.

Previously titled Who The F*@% Is Frank Zappa, the project set a record on crowdsourcing platform Kickstarter in 2016 by raising more than $1.2m, the most ever for a documentary.

Currently in pre-production, Zappa will have unprecedented access to a vault of archive material (music, films, photography) about the musician that has been compiled and preserved by his family.

Supervized

Great Point has also boarded sales on Supervized, an upcoming comedy about a retirement home populated by aging superheroes.

Directed by Steve Barron (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles; Mike Bassett: England Manage) and produced by Barron and Kieran Corrigan (Evelyn), the film will star Tom Berenger (Platoon), Beau Bridges (The Mountain Between Us) Fionnula Flanagan (The Others), and Louis Gossett Jr (An Officer And A Gentleman).

Supervized follows a group of senior superheroes who have been put out to pasture in a care home but decide to come out of retirement to take down one last villain.

Great Point Media’s EFM slate also includes Damsel, the Robert Pattinson and Mia Wasikowska-starring comedy-drama that premiered in Sundance and will have its international premiered in competition at Berlin.

The team will also be premiering footage from two further titles: Hot Air, from director Frank Coraci (The Wedding Singer) starring Steve Coogan, Neve Campbell and Skylar Astin and Johnathan, directed by Bill Oliver and starring Ansel Elgort, Suki Waterhouse and Patricia Clarkson.

Project Update #67: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

WE'RE TELLING THE STORY!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

IT'S OFFICIAL!!

The documentary is up and running! News just posted here: https://www.screendaily.com/news/great- ... 42.article about our partnership with the awesome folks at Great Point Media: http://www.greatpointmedia.com/home. GPM are independent financiers which gives us maximum creative freedom to make the movie we all want. I couldn't be more excited to be working with them and making the movie in this manner. Fully independent, the FZ way!

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN EXACTLY?

It means the doc is fully financed and our work has begun! It's going to be a long haul so don't expect to see the movie until well into 2019 at the earliest. We're telling an epic tale with a LOT of amazing archival media, thanks to all of you! So we will post some milestones as we go and have a better idea of schedule and the shape of it.

How an indie doc works is that at some point along the process of making the movie we will secure our partners for distribution. That can happen before we're done, or when we're done and showing the film at festivals. In any case we will keep everyone informed.

SO WHAT ARE WE DOING ALL DAY?

We have an enormous amount of archival footage (like you don't know that already) and will spend the better part of the next several months going through the material and getting it to a place where we can work with it in editorial. Here's J and Jayne working away on just that at Trouper Productions:
Image
Once that process is further along then the heavy lifting in edit and the interview process can begin in earnest. So thanks again to all of you for making this happen. Because of our amazing backers we have saved the vault and will now tell the story!

MUCH more anon!

BE A JERK - GO TO WORK!

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

News on the doc, news on the updates and a gem from the vault!

Happy March, Freaks! All is well and busy here at Trouper, where the sausage is being made!

I SIMPLY ADORE MONSTER MOVIES!

And docs too! And our documentary is up and running, with much going on! Most of our work for the next several months involves digging into the archival media with a fine tooth comb, tracking what we have and digging for the shiniest pieces of gold. I won't start the bulk of the interview process for some time, however I can divulge that we did film an absolutely incredible interview with a stellar lady who excels at many instruments, some of the xylophonic variety, and this extraordinary soul just might have allowed us to film her playing a particularly difficult piece of FZ's music. Anyone recognize what this is from?

Image

WHILE YOU WERE ART!

Most of you have all your rewards, but for those waiting for the Digital Vault Pass, that's about ready to go out, so thanks for your patience! And also we had a long wait for the Matt Groening print, as he's a busy man! But the wait was worth it, the piece he made just for us is incredible, and due to the wait we're adding an additional Groening piece to the delivery. Here's a little look at the early sketches for what became the final Groening art:

Image

WHO'S LOVIN' YA NOW?

We are! As we embark on the documentary and work our way through a treasure trove of material, saved by all of you, we continue to be filled with gratitude for our awesome backers. Here's a nugget we found; Zappa playing at Largo, Maryland. November 4th, 1976. With rare footage of Lady Bianca singing. Enjoy!
https://youtu.be/s_0cRm9Kp1Y
Hope you dug the music! I'll post more details about the movie as we move through the process!

Project Update #69: WHO THE F*@% IS FRANK ZAPPA? by Alex Winter

UPDATE 69 DUDES!

Backer 3 x

Posted by Alex Winter (Creator)

The Vault Pass Arrives with Bounty from the Depths of the Vault and the doc is cooking along!

REWARDS, THE HARD WAY

First, a word about rewards.

At this stage, just about everything has gone out that’s due, including – drumroll please – the Digital Vault Pass, which is launching right now. Everyone whose rewards included the Digital Vault Pass will receive an email from Backer Kit this weekend, with a URL and login information for a password protected site.

Plus, Bickford rewards have shipped, and the Groening prints are going out in early April – we’re investing in better packing material to make sure they arrive safely! Beyond that, the remaining rewards are all tied to the movie (like the DVD, the book, the soundtrack, etc), and will come to you when the film is done next year. We really appreciate everyone’s patience, especially on the Vault Pass!

We’re SUPER happy with the stuff we’re sharing with you, it’s really special material. The audio material is also amazing and rare. As you all know, the lion’s share of our preservation work was saving visual media that was in danger of deterioration. Even so, we didn’t want to not include a healthy stack of kickass audio, so Joe T. dug deep for rare music and other audio gems to share. In any case, it’s all done, and ready for you to stream and/or download! That said, keep an ear and eye out for a few more goodies that might make their way into the Vault Pass down the road.

Lastly, remember that while our backer support team is small, we are here to serve, so please get in touch at kickstarter@zappamovie.com if you’re missing anything, or have a question and we’ll get back to you!

OF COURSE WE'RE ONLY DREAMIN'

It's been so gratifying to finally be getting into the nitty-gritty on the documentary! We're mapping out future interview shoots and viewing and logging all the media we pulled down from the vault, almost a thousand hours of incredible footage! As I said I won't be getting into filming interviews for several months so we can better wrap our heads around the media we have, but I am going to make a trip up to Seattle soon and film the marvelous Mr. Bickford because that is something that must be done!

A LOAF OF CONFINEMENT, RELEASED!

Here’s a particularly cool piece we found in the Vault. Quality isn’t great but it’s a good indicator of the range of material we have. Some is pristine, some is crappy, but man the content…

For those who don’t immediately know, this is the guitar solo from "Any Kind of Pain", recorded by fan Chris Boulet and the very same as appears on the "Broadway the Hard Way" album, but we're not sure if it's from Cleveland on March 5th or Columbus on March 6th. According to notes on the tape, it's 3/6, but according to Globalia.net, it's 3/5. The BTHW album liner notes don't have details, so the only way to confirm would be to play back the master tape from the Vault which is not an option right now.

(Do any of you awesome backers have recordings of both shows and want to solve the mystery?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIx5cEV ... e=youtu.be

Hope you enjoyed that. And so you know, that clip is 100% of the footage we have from this show!

More news as we have it!

Audio only:

1. FZ Interview w. Matty Biberfeld

WRVR NYC - NY Summer 1967

Taped by FZ off the radio as it aired.
Source: 5 inch Reel-To-Reel 1/4” Mono Analog Tape

2. Oh No
(Live at the Palace Theater)

Live at the Palace Theater, Los Angeles, CA 7-20-84

Recorded direct to digital 1630, 2-Track stereo.

Players
FZ: Vocals
Napoleon Murphy Brock: Vocals
Ike Willis: Guitar, Vocals
Ray White: Guitar, Vocals
Bobby Martin: Keyboards, Vocals
Alan Zavod: Keyboards
Scott Thunes: Bass
Chad Wackerman: Drums

"A good example of a disappointing find from the Vault. During the recording of this show, the clocking was malfunctioning, causing audible artifacts throughout the entire master. FZ did not save the multi-track masters for this show, all that exists is this faulty document. For this Kickstarter reward, the audio was run through a de-clicker filter, a maximizer plug-in to achieve some gain (as the level of the recording was extremely low) and was slightly equalized to enhance top end. It’s rare, hope you enjoy!"

3. Pound For A Brown/
Sleeping In A Jar

Source: 1/4” 2-Track Analog Stereo Master

Players
Frank Zappa: Guitar
