Tomorrow I'll cut the knot to make a decision on an impromptu holiday to Cologne... I've never been on holiday by myself, never even organized any form of vacacion...

Today I broke my personal sjoelbak record. Means nothing to people who aren't Dutch.

There are 30 disks in total that you have to shove into the slots marked 1 to 4, you're given three attempts. (no jokes please)
Even spreading gives double points: one in each is worth 20 points.
With 30 disks, the maximum is 148.

My personal record was 128, that I reached many times but never broke. Yesterday I scored 132.
The average score of the world's first official championship shuffleboakd was 135.

My BF's grandfather is a regular over 140 scorer. Never had that...

There are rules for people who manage to pot all disks before they're on their third attempt.

My youngest son got his A-level (Abitur) exam results yesterday. Best results were in English and History, he did better in Biology than expected and German was passed, too (just). He ended up with an average of "2", which means he can join his brother at University, too. Both of them got there due to hard work and brains, though I suppose we must have done something right, too - which makes me feel quite proud of them and us.
He's going off to China to teach English in a Chinese school for a year before starting University. The wife's a bit worried about this, but both he and I think it's time for a bit of independence.

Cool ! You can't overlook the cathedral. Make sure you visit the top and the basement, where the Dom treasure is hided. Next to the cathedral is Römisch-Germanisches Museum (Köln was roman once), the river Rhine, and Museum Ludwig, which has got a great collection of modern art. Shopping paradise is also very close to the central station: Hohe Straße and Schildergasse, were you'll find a church, Antoniterkirche. Behind the church is Café Stanton. I would like to recommend it. There a crowds of shoppers in the Schildergasse, and when you go behind the church you'll find a place of silence and something to eat and drink. Eat and drink ! Cologne is famous for its beer. Kölsch. There are a lot of brewery pubs, where you can get fantastic beer and food. Himmel und Äd is a classic, mashed potatoes, stewed apples, fried black Pudding, and lots of onions …. hmmmmm. Other dishes are yummy, too. If you have emptied your glass of Kölsch, the waiter (Köbes) won't ask whether you want another beer. He will put another beer on your table. Cologne has one of Germany's largest universities. Fritz is an alumni :-) The student quarter is around Zülpicher Straße. And so much more ...... nice place.

Now, I'm homesick :P

Congratulations Caputh!

Oh I'll definitely visit the Dom, Fritz - not sure about all the other things. Maybe shoeshopping since my size isn't common in The Netherlands. I'm a keen museum visitor but I'm a bit short on time...

Thanks, Plook and BBP.

BBP, why don't you post a few photos of what you've seen after you've been?

Nearly involved in a high-speed rollover on the expressway while driving 75mph. A white blur zipped past in the left lane going 85-90mph and swerved tightly in front of me and just behind a semi and then back again in half a second in just enough time to see the springs and shocks decompress from the abrupt energy slosh. Texas plate. Were they texting, applying make-up, receiving road-head? Based on all the youtube videos I've seen, I was sure I was a goner. Phew, dodged a potential life ender there.

Three years later: "Whatever became of MB? Haven't heard from him in a while."
