Hey Mikey,

My main concern about the forum, as it has been in the past, is about the join up process. I really don't like the activation thread idea, where a new member has to post a one post thread that can't be replied to. The system was obscure and drove away many people trying to join. Here's an example:

Tony Germon's first and last post in 2010

This is a person asking a genuine question that never got an answer here. There are plenty more examples like this.

Activation threads that could be replied to would go a long way to fixing this especially if email notifications to the created thread were turned on by default. That way, if someone answered their question they'd be getting notification of it. Once they become familiar with the forum they can then take control over their notifications.

Thanks polydigm. We are going to upgrade to the latest version of this forum software, and it has far more robust spam protection. The activation idea was set up at a time when we were getting hit with hundreds of spam bots, but it was a stop-gap measure that stayed too long.

The new forum will be adaptive so it can be easily used on mobile devices.

We are all about having new Q&A threads for Ahmet and for Joe, and there will be a more attentive moderation (not censorship, but general moderation and cleanups that make for a good message board,) as well as regular maintenance.

We would like this place to be somewhere were fans old and new can engage in lively discussion of their choosing.

What won't be tolerated is bullying of other members, and trolls who end up driving most people away. We've removed the worst offenders here so far, and will certainly do it again if more pop up.

We'll also be dropping giant signatures..

More soon...

As previously stated, I have posted on probably 4-5 other music-related message boards over the years and have never seen one that wasn't moderated as you state above. So good for you, and good for us.

Well Mikey, these things sound good. It's been ten years since the last upgrade, so I suppose it's time.

I hope you can save the pumpkin emojis. I'm rather fond of those little critters...

We are moving the forum this weekend!

This is being done ahead of the upgrade.

The forum will be down from tonight until possibly Monday.

When we return, the forum will live at http://forum.zappa.com

We will be launching a BETA version of the new Zappa.com early next week too.

Have a great weekend,

Mikey

Don't stop holding your breath yet, this was just a holus-bolus move to a new subdomain, not a rejig. Nonetheless, I've noticed the active topics link now works.

Caveat: I'm not saying "just" to undervalue what was involved, only to compare this to what is to come, which is probably why Mikey's talking about having a beta version first to see what happens.

Personally, I don't care if we lose everything, including my post count (so what?) and start from scratch, just as long as the old one is archived read only somewhere. Then the thread repeat police can tell people to go and look it up in the archive and the irretrievably nostalgic can remove themselves from real time entirely if they so desire.

Yes - we will upgrade the actual forum software and the skin in the near future.

A new site Zappa.com will be launching this week. We've gone back and rebuilt the site from the ground up and will be going live in "beta" mode with limited content. Beyond that, we'll continue to add to, expand and improve!

So far, so good, nothing seems to be missing.

It would be lovely to have a chat button with a link for it, if possible. Thanks.
