This is an excerpt from Nicolas Slonimsky's PERFECT PITCH.

One late Saturday evening in the spring of 1981, I received a telephone call. "Nicolas Slonimsky?" (correctly pronounced) the caller inquired. "This is Frank Zappa. I never realized you were in Los Angeles, and I want so much to get in touch with you about your book of scales."...

For the rest of it....

You're probably wondering why I'm here
(not that it makes a heck of a lot of a difference to ya)

Nice! Hopefully, Mr. Slonimsky's performance will be released some day.

I got 'Perfect Pitch', his autobiography, and was delighted by his memories of FZ. There was clearly a mutual respect, and vis a vis a previous post about Zappa's status as a 'composer', Slonimsky's endorsement says more about FZ's 'status' then any academic musicologist ever could.

It's worth a read.

That was indeed neat ...

I made a suggestion to one of the morons that runs the Portland Symphony that they add new music to their repertoire since they are losing money and not getting any new folks seeing the symphony ... and I suggested that they do some Frank Zappa ... the guy looked at me and said ... "you gotta be kidding me, that's not music!" ... I told him that he would be the one out of a job, if he didn't find a new audience and that none of the kids had anything the orchestra played in their iPods ... and that he was out of touch until he wakes up!

I apologized for being rude, but I said that the reality was bigger ... and Frank was one of America's greatest and most prolific composers. I turned, snapped my butt oohh lala style and left!

Btw ... he's not there any more either!

PS ... note -- 03/25/2011 .. the Portland Symphony is doing an evening of Beatles music ... how original and creative that is, hey? ... that's the extent of their talent ... so ... yeah ... they wouldn't be able to play Frank Zappa anyway!
