Phyllis George Dies: Miss America, Pioneering NFL Sportscaster, TV Host, Entrepreneur And First Lady Of Kentucky Was 70

Image

Phyllis Ann George, the 50th winner of the iconic Miss America pageant, pioneering sportscaster, and former First Lady of Kentucky, died Friday, May 14, following a long struggle with a blood disorder.

George was born June 25, 1949 in Denton, Texas. She attended the University of North Texas for three years until being crowned Miss Texas in 1970. At that time, Texas Christian University awarded scholarships to Miss Texas honorees, and as a result, she left UNT to enroll at TCU, where she studied classical piano until she won the Miss America crown in the fall of 1971.

Her 1974 role as Allen Funt’s co-emcee of the Candid Camera show launched her career in television. That same year, CBS recruited her to join Irv Cross, Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek on the NFL Today’s pre game show, where she co-hosted live pregame shows before National Football League games.

She was one of the first women to have a nationally prominent role reporting for television sports. She also covered horse racing events, including the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes. In 1978 George became the host of the entertainment show People, the television version of People magazine. In 1985 she co-anchored the CBS Morning News show, where she interviewed prominent guests, including then-First Lady Nancy Reagan.

I've seen him in "La Grande Bouffe" and in "Themroc".
In 1974, I spent 2 months with Claude Faraldo who did the film "Themroc".
Piccoli was a great actor in these days.
You may like "Themroc", a story about a painter turned anarchist who, at night, hunt for CRS (policers), and
bring them back in his place to cook them. Weird it is.

Macau gambling king Stanley Ho dies aged 98
3 hours ago

Image

Macau gambling king Stanley Ho, who built a business empire from scratch in the former Portuguese colony and became one of Asia's richest men, died on Tuesday at the age of 98, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) reported.

The flamboyant tycoon, who loved to dance but advised his nearest and dearest to shun gambling, headed one of the world's most lucrative gaming businesses through his flagship firm, SJM Holdings Ltd, valued at about $6 billion.

Shares of the companies in the family empire surged after the news. SJM rose as much as 8.5%, passenger transport firm Shun Tak Holdings Ltd jumped 17.6% and casino operator Melco climbed 4.9%, outpacing a 2% gain for the benchmark index.

Born in Hong Kong, Ho had four wives and 17 known children, and was forced to restructure his business after a legal battle erupted within the family in 2012 over his fortune.

Analysts do not expect his death to have a big impact on day-to-day operations.

His privately held company, Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau, or STDM, has stakes in everything from luxury hotels to helicopters and horse racing.

Ho spearheaded what is known in Macau as the junket VIP system, whereby middlemen act on behalf of casinos by extending credit to gamblers and taking responsibility for collecting debts.

Some of Ho's children have become successful gaming operators in their own right. Daughter Pansy is the co-chairperson of MGM Resorts' Macau unit while son Lawrence runs Melco Resorts & Entertainment.

Bucky Baxter, Pedal-Steel Player for Bob Dylan & Steve Earle, Dead at 65

Bucky started studying the pedal steel guitar in the 1970s and in the 80s, he met country singer Steve Earle. Bucky played on Steve’s 1986 debut album Guitar Town, as well as his 1988 LP Copperhead Road and The Hard Way, which was released in 1990. Bucky was also a founding member of Steve’s backing band The Dukes.

While on tour with Earle and The Dukes, Bucky met Bob Dylan, who asked the musician to teach him how to play pedal-steel. Eventually, in 1992, Bucky joined Bob Dylan’s touring band. According to Rolling Stone, Bucky toured with Bob Dylan throughout the 1990s on his Never Ending Tour and played “more than 750 shows, including a 1995 MTV Unplugged concert, and adding pedal steel to Dylan’s Grammy-winning 1997 album, Time Out of Mind.”

Former Misfits drummer Joey Image dead at 63

By Scott Munro (Metal Hammer) 3 hours ago

Band confirm that Joey Image, who played with Misfits between 1978-1979, has died

Former Misfits drummer Joey Image has died at the age of 63. The news was confirmed by Misfits on Facebook.

No cause of death has been revealed, although Image had been battling liver cancer in 2016.

Born Joey Poole in 1957, Image joined Misfits in 1978 and played on the Horror Business and Night Of The Living Dead singles. He left Misfits after their ill-fated 1979 UK tour with The Damned and went on to play with artists including The Undead.

Image briefly reunited with Misfits in 2000 for a show at Fort Lauderdale’s Culture Room, stepping in at short notice after Dr. Chud quit the band.

In an interview with the Miami New Times in 2017, Image reflected on landing the gig with Misfits.

He said: “They see me playing, and they’re like, ‘Hey, you think you maybe wanna join our band?’ So I took their tape and learned it, and two weeks later I was playing at Max’s Kansas City club in New York.

“I was in the band. That’s how quick it all happened. I was just in the right spot, basically. Plus, I did kick ass.”

Announcing Image’s death, Misfits shared a picture of the drummer onstage with the band at Irving Plaza in New York on Halloween night in 1979.
