Hillary Clinton's brother Tony Rodham died on Friday evening, the former secretary of State announced Saturday.

"We lost my brother Tony last night. It's hard to find words, my mind is flooded with memories of him today," she wrote on Twitter.

"When he walked into a room he'd light it up with laughter. He was kind, generous, & a wonderful husband to Megan & father to Zach, Simon, & Fiona. We'll miss him very much," she continued.

Rodham, the youngest brother of Clinton, worked for the Democratic National Committee during the 1992 presidential election and entered consulting later in the 1990s. He went on to work on a series of ventures in the U.S. and abroad.

He faced several questions about his connections to the Clinton White House and efforts to leverage his proximity to the president in his business projects and personal life. The New York Times revealed in 2001 that Rodham helped obtain a pardon for a couple convicted of bank fraud in 1982 over the objections of the Justice Department.

Rodham also made an appearance on the 2016 campaign trail as Hillary Clinton returned to her family roots in Scranton, Pa.

Clinton's tweet Saturday racked up several comments expressing condolences over her loss.

"So sorry for your loss. Prayers for your family," one Twitter user wrote.

Anne Hamilton-Byrne dead: Leader of infamous cult The Family dies aged 98
Matthew Dresch

The leader of Australia's most infamous cult Anne Hamilton-Byrne has died aged 98.

The former yoga teacher ran a cult dubbed 'The Family', which raised a group of adopted children in preparation for an apocalyptic war.

She kept at least 14 children in the community, bleaching their hair blonde and giving them identical haircuts.

The cult, also known as the Great White Brotherhood, was set up in the mid 1960s in anticipation of a third world war, which Hamilton-Byrne thought would wipe out the human race.

The children, who were taught to regard as the reincarnation of Jesus Christ, were all given her surname and told to behave as siblings.

Hiring wealthy professionals to join The Family - including doctors, lawyers, nurses, architects and scientists - the cult was surrounded by rumours of LSD use, child abuse, and strange spiritual rituals.

Now a book, The Family, has delved into its history, revealing for the first time, in full, the strange and shocking story of one of the most bizarre cults in modern times.

Documentarian Rosie Jones and journalist Chris Johnston have collected testimonies from former followers, associates and detectives surrounding the sect.

"The monotony would suddenly be broken by wild outbursts of punishment and violent anger," an extract from the book reads.

"The children never knew exactly how to escape punishment because the rules changed all the time.

"They were not allowed to say they were unhappy. The children became hyper-vigilant, traumatised, anxious: scared of being punished but not sure how to prevent it.

Anne Hamilton-Byrne was described as 'beautiful and charismatic'

"Compliance and silence became important to them, to save themselves. They learned to be helpless, while all the adults had absolute power."

Children who grew up in the strange cult were interviewed for both the book and a sister documentary of the same name, which premiered at Melbourne International Film Festival last year.

They opened up about forced drug-use and the sexual assault of children.

In 1987, police swooped on The Family’s lakeside compound and rescued children who claimed they were part of their leader's "future master race".

The group had fallen largely under the radar until a former member, Sarah, went to the police with her tale of emotional and physical abuse.

The children were disciplined with starvation diets or brutal beatings

Followers accepted the glamorous yoga teacher as the female reincarnation of Christ

According to reports, the children were denied almost all access to the outside world and were often subjected to a discipline that included severe beatings and starvation diets.

"Workmen came one year in the late 1970s to fix electricity lines," another extract reads.

"They needed two weeks. The children were told they should talk to the workmen but act 'retarded', to make them think it was a special school.

"'We were taught how to roll our heads, put our heads on one side, talk nonsense, garbled noises, and act uncoordinated,' said one former Uptop child."

The children were frequently dosed with psychiatric drugs, such as diazepam, and on reaching adolescence they were compelled to undergo an initiation involving LSD.

Survivors say while under the influence of the drug, they would be left in a dark room, alone, apart from visits by Hamilton-Byrne or one of the psychiatrists from the group.

Fashion icon and artist Gloria Vanderbilt dies at 95

Image
Gloria Vanderbilt was an American artist, designer, author and actress.

(CNN) Gloria Vanderbilt died Monday morning, according to her son, CNN's Anderson Cooper. The fashion designer and socialite was 95.

Vanderbilt died at home with friends and family at her side.

"Gloria Vanderbilt was an extraordinary woman, who loved life, and lived it on her own terms," Cooper said in a statement. "She was a painter, a writer and designer but also a remarkable mother, wife, and friend.
"She was 95 years old, but ask anyone close to her, and they'd tell you: She was the youngest person they knew -- the coolest and most modern."

Born in New York in 1924, Vanderbilt grew up in France. Her father, Reginald Vanderbilt, the heir to a railroad fortune, died when she was a baby.

Young Gloria was the focus of media attention at an early age, the subject of an intense custody battle between her mother and her father's enormously wealthy sister, Gertrude. The latter prevailed in court proceedings.

"As a teenager she tried to avoid the spotlight, but reporters and cameramen followed her everywhere," Cooper said. "She was determined to make something of her life, determined to make a name for herself, and find the love she so desperately needed."

Susan Bernard, 71, Dies; Actress and Keeper of a Photographic Legacy

As an actress, Ms. Bernard was probably best known for her role at the age of 16 in the Russ Meyer cult favorite “Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!” (1965), the tale of three go-go dancers on a murderous spree in the California desert. Ms. Bernard played a woman whom they kidnapped.

Lee Iacocca, father of the Ford Mustang who later rescued Chrysler, dies at 94

Image

Lee A. Iacocca, an ambitious immigrant's son and salesman extraordinaire whose blunt and swaggering persona dominated the automobile industry like nobody since Henry Ford, died Tuesday. He was 94.

Iacocca, who spent his last years living in Los Angeles, died Tuesday morning at his Bel-Air home from complications of Parkinson’s disease, according to a family spokeswoman.

Iacocca hacked out a spectacular career, punctuated by his role as father of the wildly popular Ford Mustang in 1964, his epic 1978 firing at the hands of Henry Ford II and his dramatic rescue of Chrysler in the early 1980s.

A powerful speaker with ego to spare, Iacocca became a heroic figure to millions of Americans. He also became a household name by starring in Chrysler’s television commercials, where he pointed a finger at viewers and delivered a sales pitch that entered the lexicon: “If you can find a better car, buy it.”

But Iacocca also attracted countless critics who considered him a hypocrite and self-promoter, and saw his downfall from the presidency of Ford Motor Co. as just deserts for what they viewed as his Machiavellian scheme to reach the top.

In a characteristic response, Iacocca snapped in a 1992 interview with The Times: “Machiavelli, my ass.”

João Gilberto: Brazilian 'father of bossa nova' dies aged 88

Image
The Grammy-award winning artist avoided the spotlight in recent years

Influential Brazilian musician João Gilberto has died aged 88.

The singer and composer was known best as a pioneer of the bossa nova genre, which found international popularity in the 1960s.

Reports say Gilberto died at home in Rio de Janeiro after a period of illness. His son confirmed the news of his death in a Saturday Facebook post.

"His fight was noble, he tried to maintain dignity," Marcelo Gilberto said.

Born in the north-east state of Bahia in 1931, Gilberto began singing aged 18.

His release of the record Chega de Saudade in the late 1950s was considered a game-changer for Brazilian music.

Gilberto's style - mixing traditional and modern musical influences - inspired bossa nova, or new trend, music and many other artists after him.

In 1964, he famously collaborated with America saxophone player Stan Getz. Their album sold millions of copies and won international praise, including a US Grammy for Album of the year.

A pioneer in his field

By Leonardo Rocha, BBC News Americas Editor

João Gilberto introduced bossa nova to the world in 1958: he created a new beat, with his unique guitar style, mixing traditional samba music with modern jazz influences.

His music depicted a period of huge optimism in Brazil: an urban, industrialised country that was building a new capital and dreaming of better

His versions of songs like Quiet Nights and The Girl from Ipanema became standards in world music.

For the past decade, João Gilberto lived alone in Rio, struggling with mental health and financial issues.

Bernardo Araujo, a music journalist for Brazilian newspaper Globo, told AFP news agency last year his influence was "incalculable".

"He was the principal voice of the best known Brazilian style in the world and a revolutionary without even really meaning to be," Araujo said.

The influential musician had not been seen in public for several years.

The cause of his death has not yet been officially announced.

July 13, 2018: Ernie Caswell fell several times at the home he shared with Dennis Day. Emergency responders went to the house at 510 Pine Street and took Caswell to a hospital. He was later taken to a long-term care facility, where he currently lives.

July 17, 2018: Dennis Day was set to visit friends and come back in several days, the Phoenix Police Department learned. Over the next several weeks, officers made welfare checks at the home.

July 26, 2018: A domestic disturbance call in Coos County brought the Oregon State Police to Hwy 42 near milepost 30. There they found a man and woman in Dennis Day's car. The woman, who was driving, was ticketed for driving with a suspended license and the car was impounded.

July 27, 2018: Phoenix police searched Dennis Day's house and weren't able to find anyone inside. He was then listed as a missing person.

August 8, 2018: A "bad smell" was reported to police coming from Dennis Day's home. Responding officers said they didn't observe or smell anything in the area.

January 28, 2019: The Jackson County Sheriff's Office and the Oregon State Police each provide a detective to help the Phoenix Police Department with the investigation.

April 4, 2019: A cadaver dog was brought in to search the house on Pine Street and found a body. OSP took over the lead in the investigation.

June 6, 2019: Using "strong circumstantial evidence," the medical examiner ruled the body found in the house was Dennis Day. But officials have not said how or exactly when he died.

Dennis Day was 75 or 76 years old at the time of his death.
