Jane Withers, child star of Hollywood’s Golden Age, dies aged 95

Image

Jane Withers, a former child movie star who won hearts during Hollywood’s Golden Age, has died aged 95.

The Atlanta-born actress died on Saturday evening in Burbank, California, surrounded by her loved ones, her daughter, Kendall Errair, confirmed in a statement to Deadline.

“My mother was such a special lady,” Errair said. “She lit up a room with her laughter, but she especially radiated joy and thankfulness when talking about the career she so loved and how lucky she was.”

The cause of Withers’ death was not disclosed.

Withers got an early start in Hollywood at the age of 8, when she portrayed Joy Smythe, the spoiled and obnoxious child who tormented Shirley Temple’s angelic orphan in David Butler’s 1934 comedy-drama “Bright Eyes.”

This breakout role set her on a path of portraying tomboyish girls in films throughout the 1930s.

A year later, she played the title role in Lewis Seiler’s comedy “Ginger,” as an orphan living in a New York slum apartment with her “Uncle Rex,” an aging Shakespearean actor.

In 1947, at age 21, Withers attempted to retire to raise a family after starring in dozens of films, including “The Holy Terror,” “Wild and Woolly,” “Rascals” and “The Arizona Wildcat.”

But she was lured back to the big screen in 1956 when George Stevens cast her as neighbor Vashti Snythe in his 1956 epic “Giant,” alongside Elizabeth Taylor, Rock Hudson and James Dean.

In 1960, she was recognized for her contribution to film with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Withers achieved another burst of fame in the 1960s and ‘70s as Josephine the Plumber in television commercials for Comet cleanser.

Her final acting role was voicing Laverne the gargoyle in Disney’s 2002 animation “The Hunchback of Notre Dame II.”

Don Everly, half of singing duo who influenced generations of musicians, dies at 84

Image

Don Everly, the last surviving member of the Everly Brothers and a pioneer of rock ‘n’ roll, died at his home in Nashville on Saturday. He was 84.

Don and his younger brother, Phil, were in the first group to be inaugurated in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986, alongside Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Jerry Lee Lewis. Their family harmonies set them apart, as did an out-of-time gentleness: the Everly Brothers’ well-crafted songs floated between country and city and moved with the rhythms of a dream.

In a five-year span from 1957 to 1962, they had 15 top 10 hits, among them: “Bye Bye Love,” which launched them; “All I Have to Do Is Dream,” written by Boudleaux Bryant; and “Cathy’s Clown,” which was a No. 1 hit in 1960 and a No. 1 country hit for Reba McEntire in 1989.

Their harmonies influenced the Beatles and Simon & Garfunkel in the 1960s, and a decade later their Appalachian roots inspired country rockers such as Gram Parsons and Linda Ronstadt, who had a hit covering their “When Will I Be Loved” in 1975.

In 2019, Don was voted into the Musicians Hall of Fame in Nashville; in a video, Keith Richards called him “one of the best rhythm guitar players I’ve ever heard.”

Igor Vovkovinskiy, tallest man in US, dies aged 38

Vovkovinskiy, who was 7ft 8.33in, died of heart disease on Friday in Rochester, Minnesota

Associated Press in Rochester, Minnesota
Mon 23 Aug 2021 13.20 EDT

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/aug/23/igor-vovkovinskiy-tallest-man-us-dies

Image

Igor Vovkovinskiy, the tallest man in the US, has died in Minnesota. He was 38.

His family said the Ukrainian-born Vovkovinskiy died of heart disease on Friday at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. His mother, Svetlana Vovkovinska, an ICU nurse at Mayo, posted about his death on Facebook.

Vovkovinskiy came to the Mayo Clinic in 1989 as a child seeking treatment. A tumor pressing against his pituitary gland caused it to secrete abnormal levels of growth hormone. He grew to become the tallest man in the US at 7ft 8.33in (2.35m) and ended up staying in Rochester.

His older brother, Oleh Ladan of Brooklyn Park, told the Star Tribune of Minneapolis that Vovkovinskiy was a celebrity when he arrived from Ukraine because of his size and the flickering cold war of the late 1980s. But Ladan said Vovkovinskiy “would have rather lived a normal life than be known”.

Vovkovinskiy appeared on the Dr Oz Show and was called out by Barack Obama during a campaign rally in 2009, when the president noticed him near the stage wearing a T-shirt that read “World’s Biggest Obama Supporter”.

In 2013, he carried the Ukrainian contestant onto the stage to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest.

When he was 27, Vovkovinskiy traveled to New York and was declared America’s tallest living person by a Guinness World Records adjudicator on Oz’s show. He edged out a sheriff’s deputy in Virginia by one-third of an inch.

According to Guinness World Records, the tallest man in the world is Sultan Kösen, from Turkey. In 2016, he was measured at more than 8ft 2in.

According to the same source, the tallest person ever recorded was Robert Pershing Wadlow, from Illinois, who was measured at 8ft 11in. He died in 1940 aged just 22, from a septic blister on his right ankle caused by a poorly fitted brace.

In 2012, Vovkovinskiy issued a plea for help to cover the estimated $16,000 cost for specially made shoes that wouldn’t cause him crippling pain.

At the time, he said he hadn’t owned a pair for years that fit his feet, which were size 26 10E. Thousands donated more than double what he needed. Reebok provided the custom shoes for free.

Vovkovinskiy was born on 8 September 1982 in Bar, Ukraine, to Vovkovinska and Oleksandr Ladan, according to Ranfranz and Vine Funeral Home, which will hold a memorial service on Saturday. His father died earlier.
