RIP Richard Anderson

Mr. Anderson also had a good, small role in this film about military take-over of the U.S. government.

"Sit-down" comedian Shelly Berman dead at 92

*chuckle: That Twilight Zone episode in which he wanted everyone to be just like him.

Sounds similar to "Canarsie, where everyone looks the same."

Conversation between my wife and I just now, as I'm listening to Steely Dan:

her: Here's the problem; that music's a little loud.
me: One of the guys in Steely Dan died.
her: Are you in mourning?
me: Yeah, kind of.
her: I didn't know you liked Steely Dan.
me: I like them a lot.
her: I didn't know that.
me: There's a lot about me you don't know.
her: Oh really.
me: Yeah, I'm also a paid assassin.
her: I wouldn't mind, if the money was good.

RIP Walter Becker.

I was huge with Dan in the 70,s and early 80's...waiting for their releases were filled with anticipation...RIP Walter... :(

While the music played, you worked by candlelight
Those San Francisco nights
You were the best in town
Just by chance you crossed the diamond with the pearl

You turned it on the world
That's when you turned the world around
(Did you feel like Jesus?)
Did you realize
That you were a champion in their eyes?

On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene
But yours was kitchen-clean
Everyone stopped to stare at your technicolor motor home

Every A-Frame had your number on the wall
You must have had it all
You'd go to L.A. on a dare and you'd go it alone
(Could you live forever?)
Could you see the day?
Could you feel your whole world fall apart and fade away?

Now your patrons have all left you in the red
Your low-rent friends are dead
This life can be very strange
All those day-glo freaks who used to paint the face

They've joined the human race
Some things will never change
(Son, you were mistaken)
You are obsolete
Look at all the white men on the street

Clean this mess up else we'll all end up in jail
Those test-tubes and the scale
Just get it all out of here

Is there gas in the car?
Yes, there's gas in the car
I think the people down the hall know who you are

'Cause the man is wise
You are still an outlaw in their eyes

He'll be particularly bummed by the fact that there was almost no coverage in the German media about the death of one of Germany's most important musicians. But the Germans are like that: 1/2 of them haven't even heard of Kraftwerk.

Just curious. What German "classic rock" bands (for want of a better term) are held in high esteem in Germany? Is a band like the Scorpions celebrated?

Most of the papers had coverage about Holger's death and had obituaries the next day at least online. But I doubt that many of those writers have ever heard a note of Holger's or Can's music nor would they ever bother to listen it now. Most articles were copy&paste constructs from Wikipedia etc.

It is always the same: For most people including "writers with the pen in their hand" even Frank was the one hit wonder with one song only.

A few more examples of Genius Holger at work:

Papers, but not TV. My wife is addicted to ZDF news and instead of Holger we got the death of some obscure, crappy artist.

Good question about Germans and their awareness of their own musical history/culture. I think one has to differentiate between East and West. In the East, there is much less knowledge about e.g. "Krautrock". The well known bands are people like Die Ärtze, Rammstein, Die Toten Hosen and possibly the Scorpions. However, any "difficult", innovative or really unusual German bands tend to get easily forgetten, even if they had a hit e.g. Deutsche Amerikanische Freundschaft, Trio, Can, Kraftwerk, Ideal, Faust, Neu, Klaus Schulze.

There is also an awful tradition of "Liedermacher", basically sub Bob Dylan folkies e.g Reinhard Mey and "Schlager" (Modern Talking, Jürgen Drews, Heino - though Jello Biafra is apparently a fan of his).

I once saw a TV-interview long years ago (probably in the 90s). The only thing i remember was a sentence that also could have been said by FZ. He said something like: Only other musicians are capable of understanding and really listening to what a musician does.
