Looks like no one here has heard of Kaki King. They say she's the best solo guitar composer to come along in decades. I dunno if I agree with that but she's definately great.

You guys should check out her stuff.

..they had Ellen M'cillwaine..(sic?)..playing at this low budget music fest in Smithers....she called Lester Quitzou..(sic?) up to jam . they ripped it up awesome..she had her amps cranked and it was echoing all over the valley...never seen a women guitarist whip it out quite like that.......then she sorta disappeared into obscurity...

The International Guitar Festival is playing in my area next week. All female guitarists this year. Patty Larkin, Mimi Fox and Kaki King. I'll be checking it out.

Ani DiFranco gets my top vote. Her percussive and harmonic sensibility blow my mind. But I got a promo DVD from the Great Kat through work recently. And I must admit, while she shreads like a MF, the tunes are WAY freakin' out there. Silly shit, but I count myself a fan.

Thank you yetiwonka for giving well-deserved kudos to Kristin Hersh - terrific singer/songwriter, and if that other guy doubts her ability to play lead guitar, he should listen especially to some Muses tour tapes from the mid-'90s. You should've mentioned Tanya too, for her guitar contributions to the original Muses.

I'm surprised that no one else has mentioned:-

Sylvia Juncosa - and, of course -
CLAIRE LEMMON!!
Ani DiFranco when she feels like it can play like nobody else's business. she doesn't do the gtr thing so much anymore but those first coupla records -- she single handedly changed the wholescene. and sing? and write great poetry? and put it all together? she doesn't have to hit you to make you know she's there
and you won't forget it either anytime soon.
too bad she doesn't do bar mitzvah's anymore -- y'know, a chick with a guitar, layin a one-person posse on yer young and troubled son's ass? he'd know he's a man after that!
whew! :-*

I don't know if she has been brought up yet (didn't read thread), but...
How about Samantha Fish?

Don't rate her LM.
But if she was playing my local I'd have a shufty.
Joanna Shaw is a lot better.

Wait, I think I got it...
YOU don't rate her, because you think she isn't that great of a player.

Right?

I dont rate her - correct.
She's not a bad player - I've heard MANY better players though.
On talent alone, she'd struggle to get on many local festivals round here.
But she's got T&A, and that seems to make the difference for her.

As for having a shufty, I watch lots of local bands - some fabulous / some not good
But I still usually buy their CD.

Yeah, I see what you are saying.
But I do happen to like that cover she is doing.

And I wouldn't rate any guitar player on T&A... "thumbwork & age" ... right?
