Thanks for the cool pictures, bigbird! I guess that settles it... FZ _did_ play with the Floyd.

Now, if only a tape of the complete gig would surface...

I thought this had been settled at least back when LumpyGravy quoted page 147 from Neil Slaven's Electric Don Quixote. Slaven was there and he is giving his eyewitness account on pp 146, 147 & 148. Slaven didn't really get to speak to Zappa because of how much the latter was hating the whole event " ... his basilisk stare warned me off. I apparently did the right thing ... " Slaven says as he met Zappa on later occasions and they both "reminisced" about the Amougies Festival. But, as LumpyGravy has already pointed out, Slaven says he saw Zappa playing with Pink Floyd, among others at the Amougies Festival.

I have the Slaven book as well (although I don't have it at hand here, it's still in a box at my parents' house somewhere), but considering that the book was published over 20 years after the festival happened, he might just have misremembered, especially as Zappa jammed with several groups during the festival.

FZ himself couldn't recall his jam with Pink Floyd even a few years after it happened. I do agree that an extra eyewitness account does add up to the evidence.

most likely since it was "the blackest period of his life" he just blocked the whole thing from memory...i think we all have those moments we "choose" to forget and over time, that's just what happens.

but yeah, judging from those photos, it does indeed look like he jammed. that is definetly Nick and Roger and while Dave primarily played strats, i have quite a few pics of him playing tele's.

Nick Mason's new book Inside Out was no help either as it jumps from October '69 to June '70 without mention of the festival.

I've read some eyewitness accounts from the Actuel festival at Amougies, and supposedly it indeed was a horribly disorganised festival. Cold, poor food, not enough toilets, etc., and like I said before, the BYG label that organised this festival later gained a reputation of being con artists and even mobsters who screwed anyone who recorded for the label out of their royalties (like Gong, Sun Ra, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Archie Shepp, etc.).

I can see why most artists would rather forget about having played there.
Someone posted a torrent on Dime A Dozen that claims to contain an audience recording of FZ jamming with various bands at the Amougies festival, including "Interstellar Overdrive" with the Floyd.

Haven't had time to listen to it myself, but the guys at Zappateers seem to be convinced that this one (finally) is the real deal.

-- edit: listening to it now, no doubt that's FZ on guitar with the Floyd. What a find...

The Zappateers are hosting this torrent as well right now:
http://www.zappateers.com/bb/viewtopic.php?t=3906

The quality is pretty decent for a thirty+ year old mono audience recording.

I guess I could convert it to MP3 and host that for those who don't know how to work the Torrent/FLAC thing or with limited bandwidth, although transcoding to lossy formats is frowned upon in trading circles.

I met Roger Waters backstage at Maple Leaf Gardens in 1984. (I hung out with David Ezrin) I asked Waters this very question and he confirmed the jam.

I first heard of the performance from a guy I met at a Zappa show in Buffalo in 1981. I was going to see Zappa again in Buffalo a few months after I saw Waters so the story came to mind when I was shaking Waters' hand.

Waters laughed and said, as near as I remember, that Zappa would never admit ever hearing of Pink Floyd, much less performing with us.

Did a search of all the Amougies / Floyd topics and couldn't find this picture previously posted, so have uploaded it to an external link. Shows that FZ's guitar is indeed a Telecaster.

http://www.yourfilelink.com/get.php?fid=31341

If anyone can post the picture it would be better!

That's priceless! ;D Roger had Frank's personality figured out well.

So Sheas_81, am I right in guessing that the Ezrin you were hanging out with was related to Bob Ezrin? Bob Ezrin is one of my unsung heros.

Pink Floyd are releasing a new 27 disc box set in November. It includes a DVD with the Zappa performance on Oct. 25, 1969. http://shop.pinkfloyd.com/the-early-yea ... -1965-1972

That's a lot of stuff. I'm not saying it's not worth it, but I'm not sure if I could justify spending the $550. Something to think about.
