Just wondering if there's an uncensored version of Harry You're a Beast out there, or if anyone knows what was being said there. I think it's just reversed, but haven't actually tried flipping it.

Anyone know?

Don't come in me, in me, don't come in me, in me, (repeat)

There are uncensored versions.

....which was a tip of the hat to Lenny Bruce, from his piece "To Come"

aka "To is a Preposition, Come is a Verb"

"To . . . is a preposition.
To is a preposition.
Come . . . is a VERB.
To is a preposition, come is a verb.
To is a preposition, come is a verb.
The verb intransitive.
"To Come"."To Come".
I've heard these two words my whole adult life
and as a kid when I thought I was sleeping.
"To Come". "To Come".
It's been like a big drum solo.
"Didja come?"
"Didja come good?"
"Didja Come? Good."
"Didja come good?"
<laughter>
"Didja come good?"
<louder and louder>
"Didja come good?"
"Didja come good?"
"Didja come good?"
"Didja come good?"
Rest yer hard teacup cuz I can come better with you sweetheart than with anybody in the whole goddamn world.
<feminine voice>
"Heard he came so good--
and he came so good cuz I love you."
<soft feminine voice>
"Heard he came so good. I come better with you sweetheart than with anyone in the whole world. So good. So good. . . .
But don't come in me.
Don't come in me"
<loudly, aggressively>
"Don't come in ME, memememmeme don't come in memememememe.
Don't come in me."
<softer>
" Don't come in me, inme inme. Don't come in me, in me inme."

"I can't come."
<laughter>
"Cuz ya don't love me, that's why ya can't come."
<laughter>
"I love ya, I just can't come. That's my hang up. I can't come when I'm loaded."
"Cuz ya DON't love me. Just what the hell is the matter with ya? What has that to do with loving?"
"I just can't come, that's all."
<laughter>

Now if anyone in this room, or the world, finds those two words decadent, -- or obscene, immoral, amoral, asexual . . . if the words 'to come' really make you uncomfortable, if you think I'm really rank for sayin it to you, if the ear of the beholder gets rank from listenin to it . . . you probably can't come.
<laughter>
And then, you're of no use. Cuz that's the purpose of life. To recreate it."

Lenny Bruce, this version from Let The Buyer Beware

They reversed parts of it, left parts of it unreversed, changed around the different parts of the verse...basically, it's completely impossible to edit an uncensored version of the song with the original rythm tracks unless you own the original masters. FZ put out an uncensored version of the track in 1986, but it was an altered version with new drum and bass overdubs.

Record labels are still doing this to artists. If you ever accidentally listened to a censored version of an album with a "parental advisory" sticker* (referred to as "clean" versions of the albums by record labels, and "unlistenable shit" by fans who own the REAL versions of the albums), you'd notice that all the curse words are reversed, if you play the album backwards, they're still there. People who are offended by these words wouldn't be offended if they heard 'em backwards. There's a strange level of twisted humor in that.

Isaac

*These can possibly be found at your local library, as most people who buy 'clean' versions of these albums purchase them accidentally and are unable to sell these albums in order to get the uncensored versions.

That's what makes me think FZ did that censor himself. It looks like too much work was put in to fit the music.

One thing I've never figured out is if "Madge" is crying from the traumatizing fact that Harry has just fucked and come in her or if she's laughing because she never knew how much she would enjoy getting fucked.
I can't tell from the voice which it is.

I've always thought it was crying, but other people always say she's laughing.

I've always thought it was crying. Harry apologetically says he couldn't help it, so why apologize if she enjoyed it.

Yes, it does sound more like she's crying hysterically after the "censored, censored, censored" ("Don't come in me!") part (Obviously something craftily done by Zappa, not the record company assholes who censored, "and I still remember mama with her apron and her pad feeding all the boys at Ed's cafe", actually believing "her pad" was a bloody kotex pad!) with Harry saying, "Madge I, Madge I couldn't help it, I doggonit."

For a lot of married folks in the '60s and before, birth control consisted of the man pulling his weenus out just before ejaculation, and then spooging all over the outside of her, to try to prevent conception. Lots of folks didn't trust the old birth control pills, as it turns out, for good reason,and Catholics especially didn't wantr anything to do with the pill or condoms.

I'm guessing Madge is upset because Harry came inside of her and the last thing she wants is to get knocked up again.

including the "uncensored version". Well worth a listen.

Maybe we'll get the original from the vaults in MoWOIIFTN (2008?).

It could be possible that, while attempting to do the deed, he, uh, got soft. And Madge is laughing mercilessly. (Considering Zappa's choice of naming the male lead in Thing-Fish "Harry", it's possible.)

But it doesn't really fit with the rest of the song.

Considering Zappa's style it could well be an example of Conceptual Continuity Feral. However the whole 'pulling out prior to ejaculation' 60s thing (which I have no real knowledge of) is another plausible theory. I wonder if Frank was ever asked in an interview, or would it have been taboo in magazines back then?

ever since I understood the words (and the situation, since I was only 11 when I heard it the first time...), I've only heard it as your first alternative. Madge is crying because Harry came in her and she's afraid she might get pregnant. I don't see any other possible interpretation.

The censored line is "Don't come in me..."
The original runs - 'Don't come in me, in me, in me...
- Don't come in me, in me, in me...'
then the censorship stops...
The censored lines are not just chopped and turned backwards, but the offending word(s) are partially fluffed out...
If anyone has an uncensored version of the song itself, on vinyl (obviously, so not subject to new world -digitalis censoriusmus) feel free to mp3 me a copy... I would really like to build a 'We're only in it for the money...' censorship (if not Abosolutely-) free... (I've got the Motherpeople bit already)...

Madge is crying because Harry attempted (perhaps unsucessfully) to have sex with her because she has been raised to think that sex was unclean, animal and nasty. Harry tries to slip it to her in his desperation. Hence, "Harry, you're a beast". It was the Amurrican way. God Bless Vespucci Land.
