Listening to "The Gumbo Variations" for the first time in ages, I think I can hear elements of FZ's later guitar style in some of the violin soloing, while FZ's guitar is still not yet where it would be a few years later.

Anyone think that FZ took some pointers from Sugarcane? Or am I imagining it?

Maybe you are right, or maybe it is a bit of convergence form drinking from the same blues' fountains influence...

I hope not - I can't stand sugarcane or ponty.

I certainly hear bits that remind me of later FZ guitar. Of course, as pointed out, that could be common influences.

Has FZ talked specifically about his influences in terms of soloing? I haven't read The Real FZ book since it came out, unfortunately.

EDIT: Electric violin on The Gumbo Variations vs. outro electric guitar solo on "I'm the Slime" and solo on "Dirty Love".

(No guesses as to which album I'm listening to as I type.)
