from "Consequence of Sound .com"

Over the the summer, Rush embarked on their “R40 Tour” celebrating the 40th anniversary of drummer Neil Peart’s membership in the band. At the time, bandmate Alex Lifeson said it would likely be the band’s final full-scale tour together due to his psoriatic arthritis and Peart’s chronic tendonitis. While Lifeson left the door open for future projects, including smaller tours and soundtrack work, he said the band’s ultimate fate lays in the hands of music’s greatest drummer.

If that’s the case, it appears Rush is no more. In a new interview with Drumhead Magazine (via Jambase), Peart spoke frankly about his coming to terms with retirement. “… Lately Olivia has been introducing me to new friends at school as ‘My dad– He’s a retired drummer.’ True to say–funny to hear. And it does not pain me to realize that, like all athletes, there comes a time to… take yourself out of the game. I would rather set it aside then face the predicament described in our song ‘Losing It’ (‘Sadder still to watch it die, than never to have known it’).”

Aside from aforementioned health issues, Peart previously mentioned his desire to spend more time with family. Following the tragic deaths of his daughter and first wife in the late ’90s, Peart remarried in 2000. He and his wife had a daughter, Olivia, in 2009.

Teal Peart.

Sorry to hear about him, I hope he isn't in too much pain...

This is actually a good thing.

This man has given plenty of anticipation & delight with his craft over the course of 4 decades.

There is no reason why a musician who is no longer enjoying himself should just go through the motions while putting his body through agony while making a bad condition even worse. One cannot phone-in a Peart performance and because of this he retires an undisputed champ. Nobody unseated him, he didn't have an overdose, or crash his motorcycle into a truck. The band is well respected and created their own sound. They came, saw & conquered. They all lived happily ever after.

RUSH's GEDDY LEE Says NEIL PEART Hasn't Retired.

RUSH bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee has shot down reports that the band's drummer, Neil Peart, has retired.
Lee insists that nothing has been decided about RUSH's next move and that Peart was simply explaining his decision to take a break.

Lee tells U.K.'s Prog magazine: "There's really nothing to say. I think Neil is just explaining his reasons for not wanting to tour, with the toll that it's taking on his body. That's all I would care to comment on it."

He continued: "We'll get together eventually and chat about things. But in my view, there is certainly nothing surprising in what he said. Neil just feels that he has to explain with all the thousands of people asking, 'Why no more tours?' He needs to explain his side of it."

Asked whether he feels Peart's quote was taken out of context, Lee said: "I think that's absolutely right. That's their job. Talking about something when there's nothing to talk about."

He been talking about retiring for years and if he's ready to hang it up, good for him. Maybe he can go hang out with Bill Bruford and play some shuffleboard.

This gives new meaning to the idiom, "jumping the gun."

Nice find Doug, at least we could still get material out of Rush, they're just done coming to our backyards.

Who mentioned a gun, there are threads for that.

Or to the touring.
Both?

I imagine they will still make studio albums as well as play a few shows here and there that will be simulcast in theatres for fans to watch. It'll take care of the non-touring option.

Good run Neil. We know your arms hurt.

Now it's time to enjoy your day of leisure.

An old orchestra-practice rule sez:

1. If you go one day without practicing, You yourself can tell
2. If you go 2 days without practicing, the Conductor can tell
3. If you go 3 days without practicing, the Audience can tell

With all this talk of NP still recording or performing, my question is, now that NP is retiring due to physical troubles... will he still be practicing? I don't see NP being the kinda guy who'd want to record or perform anything other than at the best of his ability.

apparently he's retiring in three months time, when he finishes his current drum solo.

I don't think so. He's done. Good for him.

I hope he enjoys the fuck out of his retirement. Thanks for all the years of great music, and the fantastic books as well! I think I need to read Ghost Rider again now.

Some people in this thread give new meaning to the idiom, "jumping the gun."

I saw a feed from my Facebook last night with Geddy saying that article was completely taken out of context.

I saw the same quote, right here in this thread. :)

I doubt they'll stop. They will do something. But even if they ended it now, it would be a great career.

That's cool. He's just a guy who's seemed that he wouldn't mind hanging them up for good at some point based on his comments over the years.

i think it is cool and apt to put this thread in legends, myths and fantasies.
i can TOTALLY see neil floating over the river of gantanguian, smoking a scepter, and revealing the key of kinatanakuoi.
