Some nice words by Henry Rollins, on his weekly radio show from a few weeks ago:

"Last Wednesday, on October 7, Gail Zappa passed away at age 70. She maintained the integrity of her husband’s massive body of work with creativity and the utmost vigilance, putting out unreleased material and making sure the FZ catalog remained in print and upgraded sound quality when the opportunity presented itself. All those great remasters and super cool releases of FZ through the years—you can thank Gail for that.

For the last few years, I was kindly invited to her birthday party which was on January 1. It was easy to tell how happy everyone was to be there and how happy she was to have the place filled with such amazing people. I am extremely lucky to have met her a few times and experience her kindness and generosity. I miss her.

I thought it would be right and respectful to re-make the show and put in some great Frank Zappa music so we could all think of Gail and the Zappa family."

I'm not going to let tardiness prevent me from showing my sadness at the death of and appreciation for Gail Zappa.
(My choice of images should be self-explanatory.)

Been and Gone: Gail Zappa

Our regular column covering the deaths of significant - but lesser reported - people of the past month.

Gail Zappa spent the latter part of her life fiercely defending the musical heritage of her husband Frank who, together with his band, The Mothers of Invention, was one of rock's more eccentric talents. They met when she was working at a New York nightclub, where her first impressions were that he was remarkably casual about his personal hygiene. This did not prevent the couple eventually moving in together and they married a week before the birth of their first child, Moon Unit. The relationship survived the pressures of a rock lifestyle until Frank's death in 1993. He left behind a huge body of unreleased work which she issued over the ensuing years. She also came down hard on anyone who attempted to cash in on the Zappa legacy, including clamping down on tribute bands.

Someone posted a tribute video on Youtube. It is a collection of images with Carl Franzoni's recollections of Gail and Frank. It's very moving, I urge you to watch it.

That's a nice tribute but there are a couple of places where Carl gets the people wrong.
