Donald Trump flouts coronavirus guidelines with golf club gathering,
calls it a 'peaceful protest'

Toluse Olorunnipa·10:21, 9th of August, 2020.

US President Donald Trump seemed happy to facilitate a carefree evening for his members - despite the health risks.

ANALYSIS: On Friday evening (Saturday NZT), members of President Donald Trump's private golf club began streaming into a gilded New Jersey ballroom by the dozens. Some carried wine glasses - few wore masks.

The happy-hour scene just steps from the golf course was orchestrated by Trump, who decided late Friday to hold an impromptu news conference and invite his club members to gather indoors in defiance of state restrictions aimed at slowing the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

With coronavirus cases nearing 5 million in the United States and average daily deaths topping 1000, Trump's retreat to the confines of his private club offered him an opportunity to create a kind of alternate reality in which his presidency is not being beset by numerous crises.

After walking into the room to the sound of applause and Hail to the Chief playing over a loudspeaker, Trump told the crowd that newly released job numbers showed a resurging economy, his border wall was continuing to be built and executive orders were being drawn up to circumvent an intransigent Congress.

The pandemic, he told the room, "is disappearing. It's going to disappear."

Many in the crowd behaved as if the pandemic had already vanished, forgoing guidelines on social distancing, face coverings and avoiding nonessential gatherings.

Playing dual roles as president and business owner, Trump seemed happy to facilitate a carefree evening for his members - despite the health risks.

In the few minutes Trump spent focusing on the health crisis, he presented misleading or incomplete statistics indicating that other countries were facing a new "surge" in infections and America's position as the world's epicentre for the coronavirus was primarily due to the large number of tests being performed, an argument health experts have continuously said is incorrect.

Many people at the golf club event ignored guidelines on social distancing and face coverings.

"We're constantly showing cases, cases, cases, cases are up," Trump said. "Well, the reason cases are up because we're doing, one of the reasons, we're doing a lot of testing."

But health experts say it will take vigilant mitigation practices by the public - not positive spin or wishful thinking - to gain control of a virus that has killed more than 157,000 Americans.

Little of that was on display when Trump's well-heeled club members began making their way into the grand ballroom under a light drizzle Friday. Some people had their temperatures checked at the door; many didn't. The group or more than 100 mingled in one small section of the 5000 square-foot ballroom, with mere inches between each person.

Asked by reporters whether they had been tested for the coronavirus before the impromptu conference, no-one in the crowd responded.

After reporters noted the lack of social distancing in the crowd, a club official told the crowd to "spread out a little bit" because "the tweets are going out”. Masks were also handed out shortly before Trump arrived.

Again on Saturday, Trump gathered a few dozen of his supporters in the grand ballroom of his Bedminster club to witness the signing of four executive orders that he said will help the unemployed during the pandemic after his administration did not reach a deal with Congress, but that are likely to be challenged in the courts.

This time, attendees were handed masks before they walked in an encouraged to wear them. Almost everyone did, though social distancing continued to be the exception rather than the rule.

New Jersey guidelines limit most indoor gatherings to 25 people or 25 per cent of a room's capacity, whichever is lower. People are required to wear masks and maintain a distance of at least six feet (about two metres).

It’s still not clear why Donald Trump decided to stage an unscheduled event at
Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in Bedminster, New Jersey.

The office of New Jersey Gov Phil Murphy, a Democrat, referred questions about Trump's club event to the Bedminster police and the New Jersey attorney general's office.

"At this time we're not going to comment on an alleged violation," Steven Barnes, a spokesman for the attorney general's office, said on Friday. The Bedminster police did not respond to a request for comment.

Asked on Friday why he was staging an event in defiance of state guidelines, Trump denied that the gathering was unlawful. He cited an exemption that allows for indoor gatherings of up to 100 people for political events or protests.

"You have an exclusion in the law. It says peaceful protest or political activity, right?" Trump said. "And you can call it political activity, but I'd call it peaceful protest because they heard you were coming up and they know the news is fake."

The question drew boos from the crowd, and Trump's response was greeted with applause. The president walked away as his club members continued to cheer.

But as the news conference ended, it remained unclear why Trump decided to stage the unscheduled event.

His lengthy opening statement consisted largely of a rundown of many of the things he has been saying for several weeks. He attacked his Democratic rival Joe Biden, pledged to protect the suburbs, railed against "anarchists" in Portland, Oregon, criticised Democrats in Congress, previewed legally dubious executive orders and rehashed his administration's actions on opioids and prescription drug prices.

He promised an executive order soon that would require health insurers to cover pre-existing conditions for all their customers.

"This has never been done before, but it's time the people of our country are properly represented and properly taken care of," he said.

In fact, it has been done before and is a central plank of the Affordable Care Act, the law enacted under President Barack Obama that the Trump administration is seeking to strike down in a case before the Supreme Court.

Masked children sit behind chairs as they wait to watch Donald Trump speak at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.

Members in the crowd were mostly silent during the president's remarks, a far cry from the kind of raucous rallies he held before the pandemic. At some point between Trump's remarks on the "favoured-nations clause" for *SPAM* and the personnel policies at the Tennessee Valley Authority, a little girl in a yellow dress took a seat on the floor.

Before the 40-minute news conference, Trump briefly stepped out to privately address some of the members of his club, which reportedly has a six-figure initiation fee. He promised a one-of-a-kind show to the group, which included men in golf shorts and gem-tone polo shirts, women in sundresses, and a smattering of children in miniaturised versions of these outfits.

"You'll get to meet the fake news tonight. You'll get to see what I have to go through," he told the group, according to CNN, which pulled the audio from a hot mic. "Who's there? Oh all my killers are there, wow. So you'll get to see some of the people that we deal with every day."

But the club's ballroom, described on a company website as "lavishly decorated" with "exquisite French doors, crystal chandeliers and sconces”, struck some as a poor choice to hold a news conference in a middle of a pandemic that has devastated the economy.

Who decided it would look good for Trump to speak to a bunch of rich Trump club members about the need to deliver unemployed Americans relief.

"Who decided it would look good for Trump to speak to a bunch of rich Trump club members about the need to deliver unemployed Americans relief?"

Amanda Carpenter, a former aide to Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas, and a Trump critic who wrote a book titled Gaslighting America: Why We Love It When Trump Lies To Us, wrote on Twitter.

"All this shows is that Trump isn't in Washington, isn't working on this with urgency, and is supported by wealthy loyalists who can't be bothered with masks."

As for the US president, he has expressed no qualms about the optics of meeting with large groups of wealthy supporters at a time when so many are struggling. He is scheduled to hold fundraisers in New York's Hamptons and near the Jersey Shore this weekend before returning to Washington on Sunday.

Trump walks out of news conference after reporter asks him about Veterans Choice lie he's told more than 150 times

By Daniel Dale

https://www.cnn.com/2020/08/08/politics/trump-veterans-choice-paula-reid/index.html

Washington (CNN) President Donald Trump abruptly ended a Saturday news conference after a reporter challenged him on a lie about veterans health care he has told more than 150 times.

Trump, speaking at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, had claimed again that he is the one who got the Veterans Choice program passed -- adding, "They've been trying to get that passed for decades and decades and decades and no president's ever been able to do it, and we got it done."

In fact, former President Barack Obama signed the Choice program into law in 2014. The law, which allowed eligible veterans to be covered by the government for care provided by doctors outside the VA system, was a bipartisan initiative spearheaded by two senators Trump has repeatedly criticized, Bernie Sanders of Vermont and the late John McCain of Arizona.

What Trump signed was a 2018 law, the VA MISSION Act, that modified and expanded the eligibility criteria from the Choice program. Rather than tout that bill, Trump has claimed over and over that he created Veterans Choice itself -- after others had failed for "50 years."

"Why do you keep saying that you passed Veterans Choice?" CBS News White House correspondent Paula Reid asked Trump at the Saturday news conference, during which Trump announced executive actions on coronavirus relief.

As Trump tried to call on another reporter instead, Reid continued, "You said that you passed Veterans Choice. It was passed in 2014...it was a false statement, sir."

Trump paused, then responded: "OK. Thank you very much, everybody." He then walked away as the song "YMCA" played.

Trump had either never or almost never been challenged on the Veterans Choice claim before Reid did so.

Can't stand the heat, what a loser !

Still 86 days to get rid of that asshole.
Apart from some blinded fools, no one will regret him.
Well, for one thing, here in Canada, we will applaud very loud.
Putin will cry, though...

Oh, BTW... the 165000 death mark has been reached.

Donald Trump sought to have his face added to iconic Mount Rushmore
- report

The Trump administration has reportedly investigated the possibility of having the US President's face added to Mount Rushmore - an iconic national memorial in South Dakota featuring the carved faces of four past presidents.

It's not possible to add a fifth face to the mountain, as the remaining rock isn't stable enough to support an additional etching, according to the National Park Service.

However, an article by The New York Times reports that the office of South Dakota's governor - Republican Kristi Noem - was contacted by a White House aide last year inquiring about the process for adding a face. The Times cited a Republican official as their source.

Noem claims Trump expressed his desire to have his face etched into the memorial during their first meeting in the oval office.

"I shook his hand, and I said, 'Mr. President, you should come to South Dakota sometime. We have Mount Rushmore'. And he goes, 'Do you know it's my dream to have my face on Mount Rushmore?'
I started laughing," Noem recounted to South Dakota's primary newspaper, the Argus Leader.

"He wasn't laughing, so he was totally serious."

The Republican governor, known to be a close ally of the President, decided to indulge his wishes by offering the next best thing - a four-foot replica of Mount Rushmore with his face carved into it, The Times reported.

Noem greeted Trump with the model during his visit to the monument for an Independence Day speech on July the 3rd.

Mount Rushmore features 60-foot (18-metre) carved heads of presidents George Washington (incumbent from 1789 to 1787), Thomas Jefferson (1801 to 1809), Theodore Roosevelt (1901 to 1909) and Abraham Lincoln (1861 to 1865).

According to the National Park Service, the four presidents were picked to represent the United States' birth, growth, development and preservation respectively. The memorial is located in South Dakota's Black Hills region in the town of Keystone, and attracts around two million visitors annually.

Noem reportedly quipped to Trump that although adding his face to the monument is not possible, he could "pick out [another] mountain" to bear his likeness.

There's a meme of a Mount Rushmore with Trump, Bill Cosby, Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein.

The USPS Trump bullshit is yet another thing his wacko supporters will just accept. Kult45

It would appear the forum Trump supporters finally gave up. Defending Trumps stupidity wore them right out. Maybe they finally get it but are too afraid to poke back in and admit we were right all along and they were wrong. Narcissism, racism and fascism are for the low IQ folks.

One thing that is very seldom mentioned is that Hilary's emails were never hacked, everyone else's secured servers got hacked including government one's, but the server everyone said was unsecured and the highest risk to security was never penetrated...there is something ironic about that to me... :smoke:

Donald Trump's campaign defends his $8,000 in donations to Kamala Harris before he ran for office saying it shows he isn't 'racist!'

Trump donated $6,000 to Harris's reelection campaign as California attorney general
His daughter Ivanka also donated to her campaign
The contributions could undercut Trump argument she is 'nasty' and 'radical left'
Trump campaign advisor Katrina Pierson said Harris 'is a Black woman [and] he donated to her campaign so I hope we can squash this racism argument now'
Flap over donations comes as Biden prepares to appear jointly with Harris Wednesday

President Donald Trump's presidential campaign defended $8,000 in campaign contributions he and his daughter made to Kamala Harris before he was in office – claiming it puts to rest the 'racism argument.'

Trump campaign spokeswoman Katrina Pierson was asked to explain the contributions just hours after former Vice President Joe Biden announced Harris as his running mate.

Her comment late Tuesday came after the campaign immediately sought to brand Harris as a 'phony,' and Trump from the White House called her 'nasty,' as well as a 'liar' and 'mean,' while seeking to cast her as beholden to the radical left.

Pierson, who was on a Trump campaing press call Tuesday that fielded just two questions, defended the contribution in an appearance on PBS News Hour.

Trump 'donated to candidates across all aisles,' Pierson said. 'I will note that Kamala Harris is a Black woman [and] he donated to her campaign so I hope we can squash this racism argument now,' she said on the program.

Trump has said in a deposition that he made the 2014 contribution at the request of former New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.

'Mr. Schneiderman's former transition committee leader asked my daughter Ivanka if she would arrange for me to make a contribution to a fundraising event sponsored by Mr. Schneiderman for newly elected California Attorney General Kamala Harris,' Trump wrote.

Image

'In response, I made a $5,000 contribution to Ms. Harris' campaign — the highest level of sponsorship listed in the invitation — and Ivanka attended the event together with some of Trump Org.'s other top executives,' he added, in a document unearthed by the Washington Examiner during the Democratic nomination fight.

The Trump Organization had all kinds of business in the New York jurisdiction, which is where a class action case against Trump University ultimately led to a $25 million payment and settlement.

Trump's company also has business in California, where the Trump Organization in 2012 settled a lawsuit against the city of Rancho Palos Verdes. The real estate tycoon sued the city for $100 million following disputes over his 18-hole golf course.

Trump's campaign launched an attack ad Tuesday calling Harris 'phony.' But the campaign struggled to find a unified message, with some criticizing her record putting away criminals as a prosecutor, and others accusing her of bowing to a radical mob.
