Wow, Mick Taylor's alive? Who knew. Very enjoyable thread........I agree about U2 after Achtung, Baby. Bono has been taking himself way too serious for way too long. I did pick up All That You Can Leave Behind (is that the title? Geez, getting old and losing my memory...) and it was not bad---very good, actually. John Mayer is overrated, bought one of his CD's ages ago, thought it was okay, then saw a televised concert on PBS and most of the crowd were giggly women. Turned me off the music, for some reason. Years ago, I used to like this actor (yes, I'm stepping away from music.), but if I hear about a movie that stars Nicolas Cage, I steer clear. For those old-time Forum members, remember good old Aspy? She started a thread called, "My Titanic", with all the folks she'd like to see sink to bottom of the deep blue. Quite a list, and quite funny.

Great post Dovey! Yes, I remember Aspy's thread, a classic!

Mrs. Jar feels the same way about Mr. Cage.

He's right Galoot. FWIW, Magritte blatantly stole ideas from Jackson Browne. Ever see the cover of Late For the Sky??

This thread has derailed, and that's quite a shame

it appears that to be over-rated, the person etc does not necessarily need to be compared to another.

That's the spirit.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - over-rated:
One teeny rocker song that is now unlistenable, and an overplayed tune so basic that kid rock had to change to make it palatable. The rest is filler.

That Smell. You Got That Right. What's Your Name? Pretty great stuff.

Okay, I think Free Bird is over rated.

Santana. Once you've heard one record, you've pretty much heard them all.

ok wait,
hearing a song too many times and/or hearing it's title drunkenly squalled too many times
= over-rated?

Sure!
For the former, any overplayed song can make the public rate it too high.
For the latter, ask someone from Ireland visiting the US is they want to hear Danny Boy the day after St Patrick's Day.

but only if you put a nanosecond of thought into how repetition "should" work.

oh great,
i posted in a thread on a message board
and the next thing i know
i'm on a wild goose chase questioning the needle-in-a-haystack tourist on his or her musical preferences.

Nope, no refund! :)

I tried to figure out (for many times the recommended nanosecond) and could not determine how repetition should work.

When I am sure you have stopped thinking, I'll give it a try. Deal?

kiss was my first "favorite" band.
i remember listening to the s/t with my dad on one of those huge boxy furniture stereos.
i was initially attracted to them because they scared/confused me.
same goes for pink floyd. another story, another time.

nickleback... wait, they are a real thing?
kidding.
and uninterested.

metallica was my first experience with fast music.
i don't listen to them much these days, but in junior high - hella yes.
metallica was the 1 thing that united "burnouts" & "thrashers".
dude! we like.... like the same fuckin' kindsa stuff! let's party!
+ it took me a while to come to the conclusion, but i really like lars.

When I was about 13, I got a tape of kiss alive1 and quite liked it. A couple of weeks later, I bought that double platinum album and hated it so much I put a scratch on it and took it back to the shop the next day. I swapped it for some deep purple album.
I don't think nickelback are over-rated - no-one really likes them.

ok, you know who else...

billy joel.

i like his writing - in terms of what he is saying/how he is wording it.
but the delivery kills it for me.
such a love-hate thing as far as his music goes.
i just can't do it.

makes me want to punch holes in the ceiling.
