How can someone complain about a man yet still go out and play his music for a living? It's beyond me. If Zappa died in '71 I'm sure he would have less people bitching about him. I never realized Marc Bolan was considered obscure or a footnote. T-Rex was always pretty popular in England and some of their songs are still played all the time on the radio.
