Who's going? This sounds pretty cool especially with the involvement and quality of the live musicians.

I enjoy the idea of seeing/hearing ex-members playing FZ's music.
My only concern is that a hologram may limit the amount of spontaneity in the performances.

Edit: slightly longer version of press release, from Eyellusion perspective:

From what I gather, they can animate the figure to do things that aren't already captured on film. So we wouldn't be limited to just seeing a hologram version of a Baby Snakes performance, for example, but they could manipulate the image to sync with any recorded music and the live musicians. Sounds complicated and expensive but, in theory, they could create a unique Zappa concert experience involving any of his music even if it's never been played live before.

I imagine it would have to be scripted pretty tightly to pull it off but they could leave sections for improvisations (by the band, not necessarily the hologram). Hologram Frank could be sitting on a stool smoking while the other guys soloed.

OMG for the love of all that is holy. Stop. This. Utter. Shit.
Why are we focusing on this pap?
DZ used a screen and video to "play" with FZ, in years past. It was ok. It was more about connection.
There is no way in fucking hell DZ is going to be on board with this. So Ahmet can scratch that off his bucket list.
I thought ZFT with Ahmet at the helm would be better.
This is such a bad idea.

ETA: They better not be using the crowd-funding money to save the vault make the doc for this shit.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just get a carboard-cut out to "sit on a stool" while the other's solo'd?
sigh.
Jump said that shark.

Frank talked about wanting to initiate this kind of technology for home theater use in the Real FZ Book.

Will keep an eye on Dweezil & Moon's fb or twitter. There's no fucking way they're on board w/ this, just no way. Vai I could see doing something this cheesy. Keneally I want to think wouldn't touch this either, but then again he did those Dethklok tours, though in the dark and in disguise more or less.

https://twitter.com/DweezilZappa/status ... am-tour%2F

He posted a gif from Goodfellas of Ray Liotta laughing, and someone said "I take it you won't be in the touring band for this farce?" and Dweezil replied "You are correct". Which I think is what Ahmet was hoping for anyway (but I can't speak for him).

Now that I could see.

Paying money to see a concert hologram, not so much.
It sounds like something Frank would parody.

I bet if Ahmet revised the ZFT control to include Dweezil and Moon equally he would do it in a second. As it is, Ahmet is extending a false olive branch that he knows will never be accepted.

This does remind me a little bit of that old SNL spoof about Elvis' sports coat going on tour.

Considering the ZFT's massive debt issues and the fact that Ahmet is already involved with eyellusion, I guess this type of tour was inevitable.

Personally, there is definitely ambivalence. It might actually turn out to be amazingly good...or amazingly bad. Who knows?! I guess we'll find out next year?

On a business level, if Zappa Alumni are indeed going to be involved, then this tells me that promoters are expecting demand to be similar to FZ's final tours in the '80s and ZPZ's first couple of tours in 2006 & 2007 - where demand was virtually the same.

To be honest I am not sure yet how I feel about this in the long run but off the top of my head I have to say it kinda seems a bit cheesy.

The one thing that people are freaking out about is that there will be a hologram of Frank incorporated into the presentation. Take that away and what you have are a stage full of incredible musicians, some who are stars in their own right, who also were parts of our favorite Zappa bands playing Zappa music. What's so terrible about that? If Frank's image was only projected on a screen like it was at early ZPZ shows or like Steve Vai was doing last year would people be more accepting? It's only technology and it's only entertainment. Frank was trying to develop this kind of technology himself 40 years ago!

I wonder how this is going to be cost effective though. As DB said, they must be projecting a pretty significant audience. The participation of guys like Vai, Adrian, and the others will guarantee a pretty great interest in and of itself.

If they don't take time (and money) to do a re-imagining of his Crossfire appearances updated for the Trump era to be played during intermissions, this is indeed an epic fail.

I suspect Eyellusion is financially backing this.

I find this to be bizarre all over and even a little creepy on the side:

Maybe the technology involves a real-time motion capture suit they'll strap onto Ahmet, who'll be off-stage. ;)
I think that would be pretty fucking hilarious. Almost as funny as the people to whom this idea is akin to sacrilege.
