Sadly, no. I didn't get into FZ's music until 1998...

I'll just sign up with a different username and pretend that I saw FZ live back in the day, so he'll be happy!

The Grande Mothers were supposed to play here tonight and tomorrow in Whitehorse but both shows were canceled earlier today. Here's the email I received this afternoon:

Hi,

Unfortunately the Grande Mothers will not performing tonight at the Biltmore. The good people at ticketweb.ca will be sending along a message with cancellation/refund notices.
Jackfruit, the scheduled support band will STILL BE PERFORMING with Hot Potato and some Psych DJ's. Free admission! Come on down!

See below for the press release:

The Grande Mothers, scheduled to play at the Yukon Arts Centre tomorrow night, were denied entry into Canada last night. They were on their way from Los Angeles, where they are based, to Vancouver, where they were scheduled to play a concert at the Biltmore Cabaret tonight, before making their way up to Whitehorse for the concert that the Yukon Arts Centre was presenting on March 5, at 8 pm. ( http://yukonartscentre.com/2009-10/GrandeMothers.htm )

The Grande Mothers, Re:Invented, is a band centered around three Mothers of Invention alumni, and is widely considered to be the closest thing to the original as far as keeping the music of Frank Zappa alive and well. Understandably, the band has been a staple on the international tour circuit for many, many years. Their last Canadian gig was a year ago. in Vancouver.

The Grande Mothers were delayed 5 hours at the border and eventually 2 band members (original MOI members) were sent back to LA, according to their agent in Canada, Todd Jordan of Paquin Entertainment, who received the call in the wee hours this morning. In a phone conversation moments ago, Todd Jordan agreed that Frank Zappa (who was the most vocal defender of freedom of expression in all its forms) must be rolling around in his grave.

We are confident that it is simply a matter of time before we can cut through the red maple tinged tape, at which point we will be only too happy to present the Grande Mothers at the Yukon Arts Centre. It is likely not to be until fall, however. We will keep you posted. The Yukon Arts Centre is offering ticket holders the choice of either getting a full refund or having their tickets held for the new concert date. Patrons can contact the YAC Box Office (667-8574 or tix1@yac.ca), but we will also contact them directly, thanks to our new ticketing system.

For further information on the Canadian customs situation, you can contact Todd Jordan directly at Paquin Entertainment (204) 988-1133, todd@paquinentertainment.com.

They are both convicted sex offenders. Central Scrutiniser found them both a few months ago. What he was doing on a sex registry site is another issue altogether! Scruty I mean! Well hey, I guess it goes with his name!

Frank Zappa Tribute Band head for MacArts

By Rowan Davidson Reporter 17th August
https://www.bordertelegraph.com/news/17843699.frank-zappa-tribute-band-head-macarts/

RETURNING after last years success, Pygmy Twylyte will present a must-see music event at the end of the month.

While local rockers South of Sanity will be opening the show.

After a successful first year together the Scottish seven-strong band are back to keep Frank Zappa music alive.

With guitars, keyboards, saxes and a xaphoon at their disposal, the band has a foot planted in the camp of several of Zappa’s most memorable touring line-ups.

And now officially licensed by the Zappa Family Trust, Pygmy Twylyte present a must-see event for local music fans.

Notable highlights for the band include two shows as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2018, each with entirely different sets.

And a performance at the sold out Belladrum Tartan Heart festival.

If that wasn’t enough, the band also played two special gigs featuring Ben Thomas, former vocalist and multi-instrumentalist of Zappa Plays Zappa, the worldwide touring outfit fronted by Frank’s son Dweezil.

Over the course of his life, and since his death in 1993, over one hundred official Zappa albums have been released, alongside countless bootlegs.

Ranging from 60’s psychedelia with the Mothers of Invention, Jazz and Rock material through to orchestral compositions, everything was tinged with Zappa’s own inimitable spin.

A promoter for the band said: “So prolific was Frank Zappa's output, that it is nearly impossible to present a representative sample of his work in just one concert.

“Navigating the vast Zappa oeuvre then is no mean feat, but Scotland’s Pygmy Twylyte have embraced the challenge with gusto.

“Catch them at MacArts, Galashiels on August 30 to nod along to rock numbers, lose count during jazzy interludes (after all, it’s not dead – it just smells funny) and evade the infamous Frunobulax.”

Pygmy Twylyte return after last years’ phenomenal performance at Mac Arts with support from local favourites South of Sanity.

Galashiels-based South of Sanity are a five-piece classic rock band currently performing covers of bands such as Iron Maiden and AC/DC.

However, fans should keep an eye out as the group are suggesting some original pieces may be on their way.

Mac Arts doors will open on Friday, August 30 at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £10 and are on sale now via the venue box office, or on the door subject to availability for £12.
