'73 Ponty/Marquez band. Next to Dance Me This, a concert or best-of-whole-tour ID-style thing of this band is what I want to have and to hold more than anything. Other than that, well, I'd like to have it all.

Put me down for the 73 Ponty/Marquez/Underwoods/Fowlers band, too. We know from tapes in circulation that there is likely some great stuff from that band in the vaults, particularly from Australia. We can finally get a full "Farther O'Blivion" and the early "boogie"version of Yellow Snow Suite.

The '76 Bianca stuff would be great to hear, too...and since that band also includes Ray White, Bozzio and O'Hearn rhythm there's some great stuff to hear.

A complete show from Ocotober of 78 with O'Hearn and Barrow would be great.

How about Warts and All?

Well, believe it, dickhead!
FZ liked Chad's playing and so do I...besides, you've got your '98 edition to fetish!

Douchebag,
I like Chad's playing too, in fact he's better now than he ever was. Saw him with Holdsworth earlier this year. Just saying YAWYI sounds fine with Logeman, and there's 1000 other concerts/finished albums/lost episodes that are more important to release than what you suggested.

A friend of mine has a bootleg with a version of 200 years old with extended guitar and Duke piano solos. Real paint peelers.

Gimme the full quality version.

The Program included:

- piece no. 2 of visual music for jazz ensemble and 16 mm projector (1957)
- piano pieces from 'opus 5'
- collage one, for string instruments
- two fragments of prepared tape for 'opus 5'
- 'opus 5' for piano, tape recorder and multiple orchestra (full blown)
discussion with the audience

Do you think they have it in the vault?

IIRC, FZ says in the Lost Episodes liner notes that the only copy he had was a boot someone sent him.

I think there's enough in the vault to make infinite YCDTOSA's. And that's what I'd really like. If you think about it, it's quite possible that another bunch of different bands crammed together in an album is gonna happen.

So you wanted to test my knowledge of Zappalogy that is well documented in The Lost Episodes Libereto?

Yes, Frank had stated "not much tape survives" and while the notes make mention of Frank receiving a casette tape from a fan and that the KPFK archives do not contain the original tape from my observation lots of time has passed since that liberetto publication was included with the CD. Could it be possible that the ZFT have somehow obtained the original KPFK Tape or that they can work with an old casettee and rework that in the digital domain? YES.

A tape had been made and had been broadcasted on KPFK. Things are found stored away in places where people had no idea what they had. Be it a cassette from a fan, traded material or if someone found this lost treasure as in the exact tape that had been recorded by KPFK this is a significant event that deserves more attention as compared to if I exactly remember the history of the recordings. Whatever tape exists, technology in 2007 enables audio production of these treasures, be it cassette or the long lost KPFK master to be spiffed up quite a bit.

I'd like to hear any alternate takes or unreleased tunes from Ponty's 'King Kong' sessions

Maybe when Jean-Luc dies, Dweezil can buy them (if they exist)

I wonder if Frank did any other solo's on that session?...hmmm

Think of the ebay potential.

I don't think JLP even has the rights to this. The album's on Blue Note. He gets paid for every one sold, but I doubt he has any say in it. If there are leftovers, I would assume they're in the Zappa vaults and they can release them as they wish.

purely for his own listening pleasure of course! LOL

(funny...I thought the original was on Liberty...but the CD was on Blue Note
I'm prolly corn-fused....mebbe there was an Oz version on another label)

I did pick up that early Duke/Ponty album on eBay years ago
It wasn't King Kong or Canteloupe Island....forget the title actually
hafta dig it out of the garage now...LOL
(and buy a turntable belt....heh)

My wife/waitress (aka mutrongirl) saw the last post and said;
'Ooh....I like a bit o' Sugarcane....specially late at night!'

She also has a thing about Nak Blapkin....
she said if yer say it three times quickly it creates a strange form of cognitive dissonance

Ohhhh, No No Cherry is a GREAT song!!!!!!!!!
have you heard the original by the Turbans?
If not you should definitely listen to Frank and Les Carter on KPPC from 1968 11 27. It's so effin great, I play the whole thing at least once a month.
all the scratches too!!!

I agree. And any unreleased studio stuff with Sugarcane as well.

One of the things that may complicate a Ponty release is a comment I remember reading in an interview with FZ or John McLaughlin that Ponty requested that any piece of music with him soloing should list him as co-composer.
IIRC both Zappa and McLaughlin had problems with this.

yaah...I agree (but I haven't heard the original)
I wasn't particularly picking on that song....
but there are Frank tunes that probably don't change too much from gig to gig
like....I wouldn't wanna pay to have 14 versions of it

Fuck that, Jean Luc solos on "Fifty Fifty", why hasn't he sued ZFT yet? If he hasn't, I don't think there should be a problem releasing some stuff featuring Ponty (such as the spring-summer 1973 tour album).

ok, I knew what ya meant. Me either. I'm a little wowed that there have been so many versions of , say, Chunga's Revenge lately. Don't get me wrong, I love that song, and the variations too, and where things are at, wouldn't THINK of complaining about it, but still . . . wow.
I guess what I'm saying is I ain't gonna complain or wish for any thing over anything else. Since the ZFT became more communicative, more expressive of what they want to do with frank's legacy, I'm a lot more open to the idea that whatever they want to do is fine with me, so long as things keep coming.
Since Wazoo seems very much a fan-wish-driven sort of thing, rather than a Frank-intended-this-to-be-released-so-here-it-is, it does seem more possible for some of our wishes to get released. But, maybe not.

and, what makes you think I'm gonna call you gay?
