A neighbor captured the scene of heavy smoke filling the sky moments after a US Navy training airplane crashed in a neighborhood in Foley, Alabama, on Friday, October 23.

(CNN) The crew of a Navy T-6B Texan II was killed Friday when the two-seat airplane crashed in a small town near Mobile, Alabama, according to the Navy.
The turboprop aircraft crashed in Foley, which is about 30 miles by air from Mobile, at about 5 p.m. CT, said Cmdr. Zach Harrell, a public affairs officer with Naval Air Forces.

Harrell said the names of the deceased would be released after relatives have been notified. The plane is typically occupied by a student pilot and an instructor.

"It is with a heavy heart that we mourn two of our pilots who lost their lives during an aircraft crash in Alabama today," the Chief of Naval Air Training said in a Twitter post. "Our deepest sympathy goes to their family and friends at this difficult time. Rest in peace, Shipmates. We have the watch."

The Navy is not aware of any civilian casualties, Harrell said.

A home caught fire after the plane crashed but the Baldwin County Sheriff's Office also said no one on the ground was injured.
The T-6B Texan II is a tandem-seat, turboprop aircraft primarily used to train Navy and Marine Corps pilots, according to the Navy.

There are 245 T-6Bs based at the Navy's two aviation training bases, Naval Air Station Whiting Field, which is located 24 miles northeast of Pensacola, Florida, and Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas. Six additional T-6B aircraft are stationed at the US Navy Test Pilot School in Naval Air Station Patuxent River in Maryland.

NAS Whiting Field is "where the future of Naval Aviation begins," its web page says. About 1,200 new pilots go through training there each year.

The airfield is about 45 miles from the crash site.
CNN reached out to the Federal Aviation Administration, which had no further comment.

Scott Dixon wins sixth IndyCar title
to pull to within one of the record

Scott Dixon, left, and boss Chip Ganassi celebrate after winning the NTT IndyCar Series Championship

Scott Dixon has won his sixth IndyCar title to move to within one crown of A.J Foyt’s record.

Needing a ninth or better finish in the season finale in St Petersburg, Florida on Monday morning (NZT), the 40-year-old Kiwi came home third.

“I never doubted it, never doubted it, not with you guys. What a team, thank you all so much, boys and girls, everybody. Well done, well done, this is all you guys, thank you,” Dixon said over the radio moments after crossing the line.

Dixon, who at one stage this season led by 117 points but lost much of his buffer to American Josef Newgarden down the stretch, started from 11th on the grid.

Newgarden had to win to have a shot at winning consecutive titles, and did just that after making a fantastic move from a restart to hit the front with 21 laps to go.

All he could do was hope for Dixon to have a brain-explosion, or get tangled up with another car.

But Dixon held his nerve as rain started to fall on one side of the track, moving from fifth into third with less than a quarter of the race to run.

His latest title goes with his triumphs in 2003, 2008, 2013, 2015 and 2018.

“Six is good, seven sounds better. That's obviously got to be the goal,” Dixon said when asked if he would now allow himself to think about matching Foyt’s record.

Dixon did what was required from the get-go, not taking any unnecessary risks and, crucially, avoiding a few incidents which resulted in yellow flags.

One of those involved fellow Kiwi Scott McLaughlin, who failed to finish his debut race.

Dixon has now won two of the last three titles, a run interrupted last year when Newgarden won his second title.

The Tennessean tied Dixon with his series-best fourth win of the season but was in too large of a hole after Dixon opened the abbreviated and pandemic disrupted schedule with three consecutive victories.

Newgarden went to victory lane to congratulate his rival.

“We weren't good enough,” Newgarden said. “We'll reset, we'll hit them harder next year and I promise you, we will be in the fight.”

Foyt won his final title in 1979 and Dixon is the first driver since to rival that season-after-season consistency.

Election 2020: One referendum passes, another fails
05:00, 31st of October, 2020.

EDITORIAL: If 2020 is set to be the year of surprises, twists and cliffhangers, then it seems fitting that the New Zealand general election offered not one exciting ending, but two.

After the election proper on October 17, we had to wait almost two weeks for the preliminary results of two referendums. Both had enormous legal, moral, social and medical implications. To say they were hotly anticipated was an understatement.

Yet in the end, the preliminary results of the two referendums followed the pattern of pre-election polling more closely than the election results themselves. As was long signalled, the End of Life Choice Act that legalises euthanasia in New Zealand passed with a healthy margin. As for the legalisation of cannabis, most polls had that campaign narrowly losing. Again, despite hopes from some that the left-wing landslide might also favour the cannabis vote, the polls generally got it right.

There will be plenty of examination about why the cannabis argument failed in a country that is generally assumed to be fairly liberal about the widespread recreational use of the drug. Research says that 80 per cent of New Zealanders have tried cannabis at least once. Yet only 46 per cent of voters wanted the same drug to be legally regulated and taxed.

What went wrong? The Labour Government largely stayed away from the issue, leaving the heavy lifting to Green MP Chloe Swarbrick. We learned that Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern voted for legalisation but did not tell the electorate which way she would vote. Would it have made a difference to the end result if Ardern had argued as strongly for the “yes” vote in public as her predecessor, Helen Clark, has been doing? Or would she have introduced an unstable element into the election campaign?

Some will argue that the “yes” campaign got its priorities wrong. We heard a lot about regulatory systems, education, harm reduction, cannabis shops and tax takes, but very little of the essentially libertarian argument. It was worthy but also dull. It was rare to read or hear an account in the media from someone who voted “yes” simply because they find the drug pleasurable and aren’t harming others by using it. The “yes” campaigners often seemed afraid to say why they really wanted it legalised.

End-of-Life Choice referendum: How did NZ vote?

Provisional results, 30th of October

65% Yes

35% No

Source: Electoral Commission • About 25,000 (1%) of votes cast were informal ballots and did not count towards the result.

Legalisation of cannabis referendum: How did NZ vote?

Provisional results, 30th of October

45% Yes

55% No

Source: Electoral Commission • About 19,300 (0.8%) of votes cast were informal ballots and did not count towards the result.

The Green Party and others are pinning their hopes on special votes tipping the referendum in their favour, but that seems like a stretch. However, the growing calls for decriminalisation and reform that emerged during the campaign are unlikely to be silenced. It may be that going directly to a fully legalised infrastructure for growing and selling cannabis was too much for some voters to stomach.

The big political winner of Friday’s results was obviously David Seymour, the ACT leader who introduced the End of Life Choice Bill as a one-man band and now celebrates his victory with nine new friends in Parliament.

At an individual level, euthanasia is just as difficult a moral conundrum as cannabis. The fact that two-thirds of voters supported it suggests that even while they may not personally opt for such a death, they would not get in the way of others who have chosen to do so. Arguably, a similar approach to personal freedom and individual choice should have been highlighted more in the cannabis debate. Yet it’s also clear that some voters, especially parents, were not voting based on their personal choice but their concerns about its effect on others.

A father built his daughter a 50-foot pirate ship for Halloween
By Alaa Elassar, CNN

Tony DeMatteo built a pirate ship in front of his Rochester, New York, home for Halloween.

(CNN)Move over Jack Sparrow -- there's a new captain aboard this pirate ship.

A father in New York won Halloween by building a 50-foot long, 20-foot tall pirate ship that towers in front of his home in Rochester.
"I have no background in this, I just do it for fun for my kids, and that's what makes it so great," Tony DeMatteo told CNN. "It's also been a rough year for a lot of people so we decided this would be a perfect opportunity to put a smile on people's face and just give them a sense of normalcy."
The father of three said he was motivated to build the pirate ship by his children, whose faces "light up with excitement" whenever they see Halloween decorations.

Image
The pirate ship after it was completed.

A few years back, DeMatteo's now 13-year-old daughter asked for a "Pirates of the Caribbean" themed Halloween. To make her wish come true, he designed a small pirate ship. But this year's ship is twice as big.

Made from recycled metal, wood, and rope, the vessel is complete with black pirate flags and a huge skeleton hanging from the bowsprit. It's also outfitted with some impressive effects, including six cannons that light up, a fog machine and even fire blasters. DeMatteo said he also produced a soundtrack that synchronizes with the effects of the cannons and fire blasters.

The whole project cost about $3,000 in supplies and took a week to build, he said.

"It might look expensive but I bought everything second-hand and made a lot of the props myself," DeMatteo said. "It's been gathering crowds and everyone just loves it. When people come by they get so excited, it's fun to see how much people enjoy it."

Image

While the purpose of the pirate ship was to bring joy to his family and his community, there's also a good cause behind this dad's Halloween spirit.

DeMatteo asks people who stop by to bring canned goods or another food donation that he provides to people in need in the community. So far, his garage is completely packed with food donations.

But the fun's not over yet -- on Halloween, two professional pirate actors will be at DeMatteo's home to pirate the ship and give out bags of candy to kids.

Biden Takes Leads In Pa., Ga., Putting Him On Cusp Of Electoral College Win

Three days after Election Day, Democratic nominee Joe Biden took narrow leads in Pennsylvania and Georgia, according to the Associated Press, putting him on the cusp of a victory in the Electoral College.

Early Friday, Biden took a 5,500-vote lead in the Keystone State, after trailing President Trump there for days. He also took a narrow lead in Georgia, giving the Democratic nominee the lead in a state that hasn't voted for a Democrat for president since Bill Clinton was on the ticket in 1992.

Both states remained tight with votes left to count, but those remaining votes are mail-in ballots that have broadly broken in the former vice president's favor. Biden also leads in the popular vote.

Georgia may remain tight and undecided, since voters there have until Friday to return overseas and active military ballots, as well as cure, or fix, mistakes on absentee ballots. Provisional ballots also remain to be counted, as well as mail votes from some GOP-leaning counties.

In Pennsylvania, thousands of mail ballots still need to be counted, many from Democrat-leaning counties.

Biden has multiple paths to the presidency. If he wins Pennsylvania, he doesn't need any of the other states he's leading in to reach 270 electoral votes. Trump, meanwhile, must win Pennsylvania in order to retain the presidency, so both campaigns are watching the state's returns closely.

Pennsylvania's legislature did not adjust election law to allow election officials the ability to process mail ballots before Election Day, resulting in a several days long effort to finish counting mail ballots.

Trump has maintained a steady lead in North Carolina, where there hasn't been much movement, but a call has not come in part because election officials there are allowed to accept mail ballots postmarked by Nov. 3 as long as they arrive by Nov. 12.

Biden holds leads out west in Nevada, which remains too close to call, and Arizona, which the AP has already called for Biden though Trump continues to make up ground there.

In Nevada, most mail ballots remain outstanding in Clark County, home to the Democratic stronghold of Las Vegas. Election officials in Clark County are expected to brief reporters at noon ET and announce tallies from a batch of 51,000 ballots — mostly mail.

Arizona, too, is still working on its count. Biden has maintained a lead there, but it has slimmed as officials in Maricopa County update their tallies. Maricopa County is home to Phoenix, a traditionally-Republican county that has turned bluer this year.

Underlying all of this, the Trump campaign continues to sow doubts about the integrity of the election without evidence. Surrogates have held press conferences in several key states to announce charges of election fraud, without evidence. The campaign has filed lawsuits in several states, too, though judges in many cases have quickly tossed the suits.

Not long after Biden appeared in Wilmington on Thursday night to urge patience as mail ballots continue to be counted, the president went to the lectern in the White House briefing room to baselessly declare that his campaign was the victim of election fraud.

Election experts long said counting the unprecedented number of mail ballots cast this year would take time, and determining a winner would not come quickly in many states where the margins were close.

That did not stop Trump from claiming falsely, "If you count the legal votes, I easily win. If you count the illegal votes, they can try to steal the election from us."

Mail ballots still being counted are legal votes. Trump has lost Wisconsin and Michigan, according to the Associated Press.

A handful Republicans now are scrambling to renounce the president's comments about the integrity of the election, as the country remains on edge about who will win the presidency, and whether the president will accept defeat should he lose.

Biden Wins Presidency, According To AP, Edging Trump In Turbulent Race
November 7, 202011:26 AM ET

https://www.npr.org/2020/11/07/928803493/biden-wins-presidency-according-to-ap-edging-trump-in-turbulent-race

Former Vice President Joe Biden has been elected the 46th president of the United States, narrowly emerging victorious from a contentious White House campaign that stretched days past election night, as vote tallies in several swing states were slowed by an unprecedented surge in mail-in ballots.

Biden edged President Trump, who in the days since voting ended has falsely claimed a premature victory and baselessly said Democrats were trying to steal the election. The Trump campaign is still contesting the process in several states, and said in a statement Friday morning: "This election is not over."

Despite the president's rhetoric, Biden's team projected confidence as ballots were tabulated, knowing that large chunks of the vote still to be counted were in diverse Democratic strongholds like Milwaukee, Detroit and Philadelphia.

The Associated Press called the race for Biden on Saturday when it said that Pennsylvania's 20 electoral votes put him over the 270-vote threshold needed to win the Electoral College.

It's a fitting tipping point state. Biden was born in Pennsylvania and launched his campaign with rallies in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. He spent Election Day visiting his childhood home in Scranton and then rallying supporters in Philadelphia.

Trump had appeared to hold a lead in the state Tuesday night, but the margin was a mirage of sorts, because at the time more than 2.5 million mail-in ballots had not been counted. Biden won the vast majority of those yet-to-be-counted ballots.

The race was closer than preelection polls had suggested, with Trump holding on to contested states like Florida, Ohio and Texas.

But Biden won back the White House the way Democrats vowed to since the day Trump won four years ago: by resurrecting the so-called "blue wall" that Trump dismantled in 2016 — winning Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Biden was also able to flip longtime conservative redoubt Arizona, according to The Associated Press, and held a narrow lead in Georgia as of early Friday.

Violence erupts in Brazil after Carrefour security kills Black man

The death of a Black man at the hands of white supermarket security guards has been compared to George Floyd's death in the US. The man was killed on the eve of Brazil's Black Consciousness Day.

Image

Protests occurred across Brazil on Friday after a Black man died after he was beaten by white security guards at a Carrefour grocery store in Porto Alegre.

A short video captured by a store employee showed one guard restraining the man, Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas, just outside of the supermarket. Another security guard repeatedly struck Freitas' face. Later clips recorded after the initial strikes showed a guard kneeling on Freitas' back.

Protests were held outside several Carrefour stores across Brazil with demonstrators chanting "Black lives matter" and "Carrefour killer." Fires were lit in some stores. Some protesters compared Freitas' death to that of George Floyd, who died while in police custody earlier this year and sparked protests around the world.

Image

"Carrefour's hands are dirty with Black blood," one demonstrator's sign read.

The men who beat Freitas, one of whom the military said was an off-duty military policeman, have been detained and are being investigated for homicide.
Eve of Black Consciousness Day

The beating took place overnight Thursday, on the eve of Black Consciousness Day in Brazil. The day is meant to recognize Black culture in the South American nation.

Eduardo Leite, governor of the state where Proto Alegre is, tweeted his frustration on the day turned sour.

"Unfortunately, on this day in which we should be celebrating those public policies, we come across scenes that leave us all indignant due to the excessive violence that caused the death of a Black citizen at the supermarket," said Leite.

Black and mixed-race people account for about 57% of Brazil's population but are 74% of victims of lethal violence, and 79% of those killed by police, according to the Brazilian Forum on Public Safety, a nongovernmental organization.

Brazilian Vice President Hamilton Mourao told reporters the incident at the Carrefour was unfortunate but denied that it reflected racism.

"Racism doesn't exist in Brazil. That is something they want to import here," said Mourao. "I lived in the United States. There is racism there."

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has also said there is no racism in Brazil.

Carrefour in trouble again

Carrefour Brasil, the local unit of Carrefour, released a statement that said it deeply regretted what it called a brutal death. The company also said it has terminated its contract with the security firm whose employees were under investigation for the death.

The French multinational corporation has a checkered past in Brazil. The security that the company had employed was previously accused of violence, predominately against Blacks.

In August, a Carrefour Brasil worker had a heart attack and died on the floor of a store in the northeastern state of Recife. His body stayed on the floor and was covered in umbrellas and cardboard boxes. The store remained open for business until paramedics arrived.

A security guard at a store in the state of Sao Paulo killed a street dog with a metal bar in 2018. The incident sparked an outcry on social media in the country.

Covid: Argentina passes tax on wealthy to pay for virus measures

Argentina has passed a new tax on its wealthiest people to pay for medical supplies and relief measures amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Senators passed the one-off levy - dubbed the "millionaire's tax" - by 42 votes to 26 on Friday.

Those with assets worth more than 200 million pesos ($2.5m; £1.8m) - some 12,000 people - will have to pay.

Argentina has recorded close to 1.5 million infections and almost 40,000 deaths from the coronavirus.

Image
Demonstrators gathered outside the National Assembly in November when the lower house debated the measure

It has been hit hard by the pandemic, becoming the fifth country worldwide to report one million confirmed cases in October despite only having a population of about 45 million people - making it the smallest nation at the time to surpass that figure.

Lockdown measures have further dented an economy struggling with unemployment, high poverty levels and massive government debt. Argentina has been in recession since 2018.

One of the law's authors said it would only affect about 0.8% of taxpayers. Those affected will pay a progressive rate of up to 3.5% on wealth in Argentina and up to 5.25% on that outside the country.

AFP news agency reports that of the money raised, 20% will go to medical supplies, 20% to relief for small and medium-sized businesses, 20% to scholarships for students, 15% to social developments, and the remaining 25% to natural gas ventures.

Centre-left President Alberto Fernandez's government hopes to raise 300 billion pesos.

But opposition groups fear it will discourage foreign investors, and that it will not be a one-time tax.

Centre-right party Juntos por el Cambio reportedly described it as "confiscatory".

(CNN) An unidentified illness has hospitalized more than 300 people in southeastern India, including one who has died, according to local officials investigating the cases.

Patients in the city of Eluru, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, reported a range of symptoms including seizures, loss of consciousness and some nausea over the weekend, said Dolla Joshi Roy, the district surveillance officer of Eluru's West Godavari District.

This comes as India continues to battle the Covid-19 pandemic, with the world's second-highest number of infections. Andhra Pradesh is one of the worst-affected states, and currently has more than 800,000 confirmed cases.

But Covid-19 wasn't the cause of the mass hospitalizations over the weekend.

"All patients have tested negative for Covid-19," said Roy, adding that about 180 patients have now been discharged, while the rest are "stable." The patient who died had reported similar symptoms to the others, but then had a fatal but unrelated cardiac arrest, she said.

A note released by Andhra Pradesh's Health Department said that initial blood tests did not find any evidence of a viral infection, such as dengue or chikungunya, which are both caused by mosquito bites.

Authorities are now testing water samples in Eluru for contamination, after all the patients were found to receive their water from a common source. Samples have been collected from 57,863 households and sent to a forensic laboratory.

"The cause is still unknown but still we are doing all kinds of testing, including testing food and milk," said Roy.

Specialists from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and a neurologist from out of state have also arrived in Eluru to conduct further neurotoxic tests, and are waiting for the results.

The Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh, Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy, visited the patients on Monday.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A protest at the Oregon State Capitol at the beginning of the special legislative session ended with 4 people arrested and another person being sought, the Oregon State Police said.

Those arrested were identified as Ryan Lyles, Ronald Vanvlack, Jerry Dyerson and Jeremiah Pruitt. The man being sought is Jeremy Roberts.

Authorities said a number of demonstrators arrived around 8:30 a.m. and tried to get into the Capitol, which was closed to the public due to the pandemic. As one person left the building, several protesters used the chance opening to get inside. Troopers asked them to leave and “the altercation became physical,” officials said Monday night.

One of the protesters used bear spray or some other chemical irritant in the vestibule but troopers and the Salem police were able to contain the crowd.

Despite warnings to leave or face arrest, demonstrators stayed. Around 10:30 a.m., the chemical irritant was used again, which led to Lyles’ arrest Lyles. The 41-year-old was charged with being a felon in possession of body armor and unlawful use of Mace.

Vanvlack, 75, and Dyerson, 53, stayed in the vestibule and were arrested for trespass and disorderly conduct.

Then around 1:30 p.m., protesters again tried to get into the building through a door on the west side. Officials said a window to the door was broken but no one got in. That’s when Pruitt, 35, was arrested for criminal mischief and disorderly conduct.

The man being sought, 40-year-old Jeremy Roberts, is believed to have tried to get into the building in the afternoon and is believed to have attacked 2 reporters.

Despite their attempts to disrupt, the Oregon legislature completed their special session and passed a series of COVID relief bills.
