Vehicle carrying governor struck Black Lives Matter protester who blocked the road

A vehicle transporting Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds struck a Black Lives Matter protester Tuesday as the protester was intentionally blocking the car's path.

A group of about two dozen Des Moines Black Lives Matter activists showed up to Reynolds' public events in Steamboat Rock and Ackley, each about 90 miles from Des Moines, on Tuesday to urge her to immediately sign an executive order restoring voting rights to people with felony convictions who have completed their sentences. Reynolds has said she will sign the order but not immediately.

The activists were not allowed into Reynolds' events, which were held on private property, so a group of them stood in the driveway of Family Traditions Meat in Ackley to block Reynolds from driving away.

Jaylen Cavil, an organizer with Des Moines Black Lives Matter, said he was standing in the driveway hoping that Reynolds would roll down the window of the vehicle and speak to them.

"The SUV that Gov. Reynolds was driving in drove right up to me. I was standing right in front of the car and I just stood there. I was like, 'I’m going to stand here. Surely the driver of the governor is not going to hit me with her car. This is the governor, my governor, who’s supposed to be representing me. I’m sure that her car is not going to intentionally hit me.' I was wrong," he said.

Cavil said he was not injured, but it was shocking when the vehicle hit him. He said the impact spun him around and lifted him slightly onto the hood of the vehicle.

Reynolds' spokesperson, Pat Garrett, declined to comment but a spokesperson for the Iowa State Patrol confirmed the incident.

"The Iowa State Patrol is aware of an incident that occurred near Ackley, Iowa, involving a demonstrator and a vehicle transporting the governor. Preliminary reports from law enforcement at the scene suggest the demonstrator intentionally stepped in front of the moving vehicle. The demonstrator appeared to suffer no injuries, did not request medical treatment, and continued with his activities. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating the circumstances," Sgt. Alex Dinkla, a spokesperson for the Iowa State Patrol, said in a statement.

The vehicle drove away after it struck him, Cavil said. Afterward, Cavil said an Iowa State Patrol officer walked up to him began yelling at him and called him an idiot.

Cavil said he believes the driver of the vehicle hit him intentionally. He said the driver stopped in front of him for a second and then accelerated.

"I 100% think they intentionally hit me," he said. "There's no way that this driver could not see me right in front of his car."

Two other activists, Matthew Bruce and Grace Merritt, confirmed Cavil's account of what happened.

Dinkla did not respond to questions about who was driving the governor's vehicle and whether a trooper threatened to arrest Cavil, as Bruce claimed.

Cavil was part of the group of Black Lives Matter activists who met with Reynolds twice in her office at the Iowa Capitol to demand she sign an executive order restoring voting rights to felons who have completed their sentences. Reynolds has said she will sign an order by the late summer or early fall, but activists and every Democratic member of the Iowa Legislature have urged her to sign the order by July 4.

Cavil said he and other activists will continue attending Reynolds' events to pressure her to sign the order.

"We just want answers. That’s why we’re following her around. We want her to know that we are not going to stay silent," he said.

Ghislaine Maxwell, longtime Jeffrey Epstein associate, arrested for recruiting and abusing girls in sex-trafficking ring

https://www.cnn.com/2020/07/02/us/ghislaine-maxwell-jeffrey-epstein/index.html

New York (CNN)Ghislaine Maxwell, the onetime girlfriend and alleged accomplice of accused sex-trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, was arrested Thursday morning and charged by federal prosecutors in New York for her alleged role in recruiting, grooming and sexually abusing underage girls as young as 14 as part of a years-long criminal enterprise.
Maxwell, 58, whose whereabouts were being tracked by federal agents, was taken into custody in New Hampshire without incident and charged with six criminal counts. The charges include enticement and conspiracy to entice minors to travel to engage in illegal sex acts, transportation and conspiracy to transport minors with intent to engage in criminal sexual activity and two counts of perjury, according to a federal indictment unsealed Thursday.

Between 1994 and 1997, according to the indictment, "Maxwell assisted, facilitated, and contributed to Jeffrey Epstein's abuse of minor girls by, among other things, helping Epstein to recruit, groom, and ultimately abuse victims known to Maxwell and Epstein to be under the age of 18."

Maxwell and deceased multimillionaire Epstein are accused of luring the girls to an array of residences, including his Upper East Side mansion, his Palm Beach estate, and his sprawling Santa Fe ranch, as well as London, England, where she has a home.

Maxwell was arrested in Bradford, New Hampshire, nearly a year after federal authorities in New York arrested Epstein as he returned to the United States on a private jet from Paris.

During a teleconference appearance in New Hampshire federal court, Maxwell waived her right to a detention hearing. The judge ordered her remanded to the custody of the US Marshals Service and said she will be transferred to New York for a detention hearing there.

An attorney for Maxwell, Lawrence Vogelman, declined to comment Thursday. Maxwell has previously denied wrongdoing, and in a deposition has called at least one of her accusers "a liar." She faces as many as 35 years in prison if convicted on the most serious charges.

Though Maxwell's whereabouts had been unclear—and the source of much speculation since Epstein's arrest last summer—FBI New York Assistant Director in Charge William Sweeney said during a news conference Thursday that authorities have "been discreetly keeping tabs" on her, adding that they pounced when they learned recently that she "slithered away to a gorgeous property in New Hampshire." The indictment was filed under seal on June 29.

In court documents asking a judge to order that Maxwell be detained pending trial, prosecutors said she had been "hiding out" in various locations around New England for the past year, changing her phone number and email address, and ordering packages under a different name to avoid detection. Prosecutors identified 15 different bank accounts associated with Maxwell that at times held as much as $20 million.

'Prequel' to Epstein case

A British socialite who is the daughter of deceased newspaper tycoon Robert Maxwell, Ghislaine Maxwell has been a central focus of federal prosecutors' ongoing investigation of alleged co-conspirators of Epstein in the wake of his jailhouse death by suicide while awaiting trial in August 2019.
Prosecutors had charged him with having run a trafficking enterprise in which he paid hundreds of dollars in cash to girls as young as 14 to have sex with him at his Upper East Side home and his estate in Palm Beach, worked with employees and associates to lure the girls to his residences and paid some of his victims to recruit other girls for him to abuse.

Since Epstein's death, public pressure has mounted to hold those who assisted him -- perhaps including Maxwell and a coterie of young women who allegedly worked under her -- accountable not only for his actions, but also for their own roles. She and other women have been named in multiple lawsuits by women who said they were abused by Epstein.

During Thursday's news conference, Audrey Strauss, the Acting U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, described the case against Maxwell as "the prequel to the earlier case that we brought against Jeffrey Epstein."
Strauss said the investigation into additional co-conspirators "remains ongoing."

According to Thursday's indictment, Maxwell was the principal recruiter for victims of Epstein's sex trafficking ring. The indictment describes Maxwell's relationship with three victims, identified only as Minor Victim-1, Minor Victim-2 and Minor Victim-3.

Maxwell, along with Epstein, is accused by prosecutors of luring the young girls into their circle, inquiring about their schools and families, taking them to the movies or shopping. After developing a rapport with them, Maxwell would allegedly steer the relationship into sexual territory, talking to them about sexual topics or undressing in front of them, followed by encouraging them to give Epstein massages, during which the girls were fully or partially nude, the indictment says.

Those massages, some of which Maxwell participated in, sometimes turned sexual, according to the indictment, which says Maxwell was "present for and participated in the sexual abuse of minor victims." In the indictments of both Maxwell and Epstein, federal prosecutors described the abuse Epstein allegedly perpetrated during those encounters, which included touching a girl's genitals, using a sex toy on them or directing a girl to touch him while he masturbated.

The indictment alleges that Maxwell participated in "multiple group sexual encounters" with Minor Victim-1 in New York and Florida between 1994 and 1997, gave

Minor Victim-2 an unsolicited massage in New Mexico in 1996 while the girl was topless and encouraged Minor Victim-3 to give massages to Epstein in London between 1994 and 1995, "knowing that Epstein intended to sexually abuse [her] during those massages."

Prosecutors may face a legal hurdle
The perjury charges in the indictment stem from a 2016 deposition of Maxwell conducted as part of civil litigation. As Strauss put it Thursday, "Maxwell lied because the truth, as alleged, was almost unspeakable."

During that testimony, Maxwell denied having given anyone a massage, specifically denied having given Minor Victim-2 a massage and said, "I wasn't aware that [Epstein] was having sexual activities with anyone when I was with him other than myself.
Asked whether Epstein had a "scheme to recruit underage girls for sexual massages," she replied: "I don't know what you're talking about."

In charging Maxwell, however, federal prosecutors in New York may face a legal hurdle. In 2007, Epstein signed a non-prosecution agreement with federal prosecutors in Florida that appeared to immunize his accomplices. The document says that "the United States also agrees that it will not institute any criminal charges against any potential co-conspirators of Epstein, including but not limited to" four alleged accomplices. Maxwell isn't listed among them, but her lawyers may argue that she is covered by the phrase "but not limited to."

That deal allowed Epstein to plead guilty in 2008 to two state prostitution charges and serve just 13 months in a Florida state prison.

When Epstein himself was indicted, New York federal prosecutors said they believed the Florida agreement didn't restrict their office from prosecuting him, but his lawyers argued otherwise. Prosecutors hold the same belief in charging Maxwell and pursuing other potential accomplices as part of their ongoing investigation.

The developments Thursday brought relief for those who say they were victims of Epstein and Maxwell, but not a sense of closure. Attorney Spencer Kuvin, who represents six Epstein victims who have remained anonymous, said Maxwell's arrest "is hopefully just the beginning."
"We're hopeful that there will continue to be additional arrests with respect to other co-conspirators," he said.

Brad Edwards, an attorney who represents 55 alleged Epstein victims, said his clients were "relieved and happy that this day has finally come."
Still, many victims have spoken over the years about their disappointment with prosecutors' ability to properly punish Epstein and his alleged accomplices, citing his lenient 2007 plea deal and his capacity to escape trial by committing suicide. On Thursday, Strauss said her office is "sensitive" to the need to protect

Maxwell and that prosecutors would have "a dialogue" with the Bureau of Prisons if she is detained pending trial.

CNN's Sonia Moghe contributed to this report.

VERIFY: Yes, there really is a coin shortage in the US
Fed Chairman Jerome Powell said the situation is temporary.

HOUSTON — Is the pandemic causing a coin shortage? Someone asked the Verify team that question after seeing a notice at a local store.

The notice on the door at Lowe’s says, “Attention customers: the U.S. is currently experiencing a coin shortage. Please use correct change or other form of tender if possible. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Tomi asked the Verify team, “Is this accurate?”

Our sources for this are Jerome Powell, chairman of the board of governors of the Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserve, itself.

The Federal Reserve said in a news release on June 11, “The Covid‐19 pandemic has significantly disrupted the supply chain and normal circulation patterns for U.S. coin.”

A week later, Powell addressed the shortage before the U.S. House Committee of Financial Services.

“What’s happened is that with the partial closure of the economy, the flow of coins through the economy has kind of stopped,” Powell said.

Because of that, some retailers are asking customers to use exact change to help minimize the impact.

So we can Verify there is a coin shortage across the country.

Powell said the situation is temporary and now that the economy has started partially opening, they are starting to see some progress.

RG Kat was telling me about this over the weekend, she said it is pretty bad and their merchants are pissed because they can't get the usual amount of coinage they need, her bank is being supplied 40% less coinage then before the Pandemic...

^^^^^ frightening..... and no flour! :P ^^^^^

On the Covid-19 front

According to the man and by man I mean Jacinda, NZ now has:

1,537 coronavirus cases

1,187 confirmed

350 probable

23 Active

22 dead

1,492 recovered

We had a wee spike in cases that were attributed to people flying in and not
isolating. The NZ boarder is now closed to all non NZ citizens, the privileged
few incoming folks must agree to 15 days quarantine (expenses paid house
arrest at nice hotels estimated to cost $4,000.00 per person) including testing.
The government has requested that airlines stop booking flights into NZ for fear
of overloading the quarantine system.

Last week a woman escaped a quarantine hotel by crawling through a hedge,
only to get lost and ask a cop for directions.....arrested and charged under "the health act".

Yesterday a guy (who has tested Covid-19 positive) fled his hotel by blending in with the
departing fencing contractors who had just completed the security fence to control people
coming and going from the hotel.....
He returned an hour and a half later and was arrested and charged under "the health act".
He went shopping, the supermarket has had to be sanitized and 18 staff isolated for 14 days,
police are going through closed circuit tv footage to trace his movements and other folks he's
rubbed up against.....

As it's an election year the National (fat cat) main opposition party are doing and saying
anything for air time and political point scoring.....recently they claimed, through an
unnamed anonymous source that a homeless man had quarantined himself at a 4 star hotel
for a free couple of weeks on the tax payer. Despite deep state levels of investigations it
couldn't be proven, or disproven.....

Last week a list of Covid-19 patient's personal information was leaked to the media,
the National (fat cat) party screamed the house down on every media platform
sloppy shabby inept government and demanding a crown inquiry etc etc
Turns out it was leaked to the media by a National (fat cat) party member of parliament
who got it from the former president of the National (fat cat) party who's involved
with a rescue helicopter service and is not being entirely truthful about her source.....

They both resigned today.....

Bolsonaro Tests Positive for COVID-19

Angel Boligan
Image

Another day, another prominent person diagnosed with COVID-19. On Tuesday, it was Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro. He developed clear symptoms over the weekend, was tested on Monday, and announced the results via a televised address on Tuesday, conceding "Everyone knew that it would reach a considerable part of the population sooner or later. It was positive for me."

The subtext of this story is the reason it's on the front page of pretty much every news site and newspaper in America. Bolsonaro and Donald Trump are not only right-wing populists, they have also downplayed and/or denied the virulence of COVID-19, with the not-coincidental result that their nations have had the worst outcomes in the world in terms of the disease. And so, the general idea is that now that the Brazilian president has fallen victim, the American president is not far behind. We shall see what happens, although it is hard to imagine Trump publicly admitting a positive diagnosis, even if he gets one. Of course, if he ends up at Walter Reed and Mike Pence invokes the 25th Amendment, it will be harder to hide.

Looks like there's no end for good news these days. . . That and the Trump/Biden polls.

To be clear: I don't wish COVID-19 to no one but when a stupid leader like Bolsonaro gets it I can't help myself smiling.
Imagine the number of folks who could have been saved from COVID-19 if it was not for him and Trump.
When stupids get their due, rejoice ! That's justice.

‘It was like being preyed upon’: Portland protesters say federal officers in unmarked vans are detaining them

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/07/17/portland-protests-federal-arrests/

By
Katie Shepherd and
Mark Berman
July 17, 2020 at 1:31 p.m. PDT

Federal customs officials said Friday that their agents had detained a demonstrator in Portland, Ore., who had described being “terrified” by an encounter with unidentified men in military fatigues, offering a defense amid intense criticism of accounts of federal officials circulating in the city in unmarked cars.

Mark Pettibone, a 29-year-old demonstrator, told The Washington Post he was scared when men in green military fatigues and generic “police” patches jumped out of an unmarked minivan early Wednesday. Reports of similar incidents have sparked condemnation from civil-rights activists and lawmakers.

Pettibone told The Post in an interview he did not know who detained him. In a statement on Friday, U.S. Customs and Border Protection said its agents had taken the action and that they “had information indicating the person in the video was suspected of assaults against federal agents or destruction of federal property.”

When the agents approached him, Customs said, “a large and violent mob moved towards their location. For everyone’s safety, CBP agents quickly moved the suspect to a safer location for further questioning."

The agency also disputed his description of not knowing who detained him, saying: “The CBP agents identified themselves and were wearing CBP insignia during the encounter. The names of the agents were not displayed due to recent doxing incidents against law enforcement personnel who serve and protect our country.”

In Pettibone’s account, when several men in fatigues approached him, his first instinct was to run.

He did not know whether the men were police or far-right extremists, who frequently don militarylike outfits and harass left-leaning protesters in Portland. The 29-year-old resident said he made it about a half-block before he realized there would be no escape.

Then, he sank to his knees, hands in the air.

“I was terrified,” Pettibone said. “It seemed like it was out of a horror/sci-fi, like a Philip K. Dick novel. It was like being preyed upon.”

He was detained and searched. One man asked him if he had any weapons; he did not. They drove him to the federal courthouse and placed him in a holding cell, he said. Two officers eventually returned to read his Miranda rights and ask if he would waive those rights to answer a few questions; he did not.

And almost as suddenly as they had grabbed him off the street, the men let him go. The federal officers who snatched him off the street as he was walking home from a peaceful protest did not tell him why he had been detained or provide him any record of an arrest, he told The Post. As far as he knows, he has not been charged with any crimes.

His detention, which was first reported by Oregon Public Broadcasting, and videos of similar actions have raised alarm bells for many. Legal scholars questioned whether the detentions pass constitutional muster.

“Arrests require probable cause that a federal crime had been committed, that is, specific information indicating that the person likely committed a federal offense, or a fair probability that the person committed a federal offense,” Orin Kerr, a professor at University of California at Berkeley Law School, told The Post. “If the agents are grabbing people because they may have been involved in protests, that’s not probable cause.”

Federal officers from the U.S. Marshals Service and Department of Homeland Security have stormed Portland’s streets as part of President Trump’s promised strong response to ongoing protests. Local leaders expressed alarm at news of Pettibone’s detention and echoed calls for the feds to leave that have grown stronger since Marshals Service officers severely wounded a peaceful protester on Saturday.

“A peaceful protester in Portland was shot in the head by one of Donald Trump’s secret police,” Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) wrote in a Thursday tweet that also called out acting DHS secretary Chad Wolf. “Now Trump and Chad Wolf are weaponizing the DHS as their own occupying army to provoke violence on the streets of my hometown because they think it plays well with right-wing media.”

Civil rights advocates suggested the Trump administration is testing the limits of its executive power.

“I think Portland is a test case,” Zakir Khan, a spokesman for the Oregon chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, told The Post. “They want to see what they can get away with before launching into other parts of the country.”

Jann Carson, interim executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, called the recent arrests “flat-out unconstitutional” in a statement shared with The Post.

“Usually when we see people in unmarked cars forcibly grab someone off the street, we call it kidnapping,” Carson said. “Protesters in Portland have been shot in the head, swept away in unmarked cars, and repeatedly tear-gassed by uninvited and unwelcome federal agents. We won’t rest until they are gone.”

Nightly protests have seized Portland’s downtown streets since George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis in late May. For more than six weeks, Portland police have clashed with left-leaning protesters speaking out against racism and police brutality. Tear gas has choked hundreds in the city, both protesters and other residents caught in the crossfire. Protesters have spray-painted anti-police messages on the Mark O. Hatfield Federal Courthouse and Multnomah County Justice Center, which serves as the local jail and a police headquarters.

After Trump sent federal officers to the city, allegedly to quell violence, tensions escalated. The feds have repeatedly deployed tear gas to scuttle protests, despite a newly passed state law that bans local police from using the chemical irritant except to quash riots. On Saturday, federal agents shot a man in the face with a less-than-lethal munition, fracturing his skull. Local officials, from the mayor to the governor, have asked the president to pull the federal officers out of the city.

“I am proud to be among the loud chorus of elected officials calling for the federal troops in Portland’s streets to go home,” Portland City Commissioner Jo Ann Hardesty said in a statement shared with The Post on Sunday. “Their presence here has escalated tensions and put countless Portlanders exercising their First Amendment rights in greater danger.”

Pettibone says he was simply exercising his free speech rights on Wednesday when he was detained. He and a friend were walking to a car to drive home after a relatively calm demonstration in a nearby park. He said he did not do anything to instigate police that night, or at any of the other protests he had attended over the past six weeks.

“I have a pretty strong philosophical conviction that I will not engage in any violent activity,” he told The Post. “I keep it mellow and try to document police brutality and try to show up for solidarity.”

DHS did not immediately respond to a request for comment Thursday night, and likewise did not answer questions from Oregon Public Broadcasting. The Marshals Service told the radio station its officers had not arrested Pettibone and said the agency always keeps records of its arrests.

Trump has cheered harsh tactics by officers in Portland, and the acting Homeland Security secretary has vowed to keep federal forces in Portland until local leaders “publicly condemn what the violent anarchists are doing.”

“We’ve done a great job in Portland,” Trump said at a news conference on Monday. “Portland was totally out of control, and they went in, and I guess we have many people right now in jail. We very much quelled it, and if it starts again, we’ll quell it again very easily. It’s not hard to do, if you know what you’re doing.”

Yet the scene on Portland’s streets late Thursday reflected a different reality.

Protesters once again filled the streets in downtown, defiantly moving fencing meant to keep the crowd away from the Multnomah County Justice Center. And once again, federal officers launched tear gas into the protest.

As police, both local and federal, have responded to demonstrators with increasing force, the protests have grown more unwieldy and determined. Neither side appears ready to surrender.

“Once you’re out on the street and you’ve been tear-gassed and you see that there’s no reason — the police will claim that there’s a riot just so they can use tear gas — it makes you want to go out there even more to see if there can be any kind of justice,” Pettibone told The Post.

Portland mayor demands Trump remove federal agents from city

People detained far from property agents were sent to protect
Trump looking for a confrontation, says governor

The mayor of Portland has demanded that Donald Trump remove militarized federal agents deployed to the city after some detained people far from the federal property they were sent to protect.

“Keep your troops in your own buildings, or have them leave our city,” Ted Wheeler, the mayor, told the president, at a news conference on Friday.

The Democratic governor, Kate Brown, said Trump was looking for a confrontation in the hopes of winning political points elsewhere, and for a distraction from the coronavirus pandemic, which is causing rising numbers of infections in Oregon and across the nation.

Brown’s spokesman, Charles Boyle, said arresting people without probable cause was “extraordinarily concerning and a violation of their civil liberties and constitutional rights”.

The Oregon attorney general, Ellen Rosenblum, said she would file a lawsuit in federal court against the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the Marshals Service, Customs and Border Protection, and Federal Protection Service, alleging they have violated the civil rights of Oregonians by detaining them without probable cause. She will also seek a temporary restraining order against them.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Oregon said the federal agents appear to be violating people’s rights, which “should concern everyone in the United States”.

“Usually when we see people in unmarked cars forcibly grab someone off the street we call it kidnapping,“ said Jann Carson, ACLU interim executive director. “The actions of the militarized federal officers are flat-out unconstitutional and will not go unanswered.”

Federal officers have charged at least 13 people with crimes related to the protests, Oregon Public Broadcasting reported on Thursday. Some have been detained by the federal courthouse, the scene of protests. Others were grabbed blocks away.

The protests following the police killing of Floyd in Minneapolis have often devolved into violent clashes between smaller groups and the police. Tensions have escalated since an officer with the US Marshals Service fired a less-lethal round at a protester’s head, critically injuring him.

“This is part of the core media strategy out of Trump’s White House: to use federal troops to bolster his sagging polling data,” Wheeler said. “And it is an absolute abuse of federal law enforcement officials.”

One video showed two people in helmets and green camouflage with “police” patches grabbing a person on the sidewalk, handcuffing them and taking them into an unmarked vehicle.

“Who are you?” someone asks the pair, who do not respond. At least some of the federal officers belong to the DHS.

Customs and Border Protection said in a statement its agents had information indicating the person in the video was suspected of assaulting federal agents or destroying federal property.

“Once CBP agents approached the suspect, a large and violent mob moved towards their location. For everyone’s safety, CBP agents quickly moved the suspect to a safer location,” the agency said.

However, the video shows no mob.

In another case, Mark Pettibone, 29, said a minivan rolled up to him around 2am on Wednesday and four or five people got out “looking like they were deployed to a Middle Eastern war”.

Pettibone told the Associated Press he got to his knees as the group approached. They dragged him into the van without identifying themselves or responding to his questions and pulled his beanie over his eyes so he couldn’t see, he said.

“I figured I was just going to disappear for an indefinite amount of time,” Pettibone said, adding that he was put into a cell and officers dumped the contents of his backpack, with one remarking: “Oh, this is a bunch of nothing.”

After he asked for a lawyer, Pettibone was allowed to leave.

“Authoritarian governments, not democratic republics, send unmarked authorities after protesters,” the Democratic US senator Jeff Merkley said in a tweet.

US attorney Billy Williams in Portland said on Friday he has requested the Department of Homeland Security’s office of the inspector general to investigate the actions of DHS personnel.

In a letter, Oregon’s two senators and two of its House members demanded that the US attorney general, William Barr, and the acting homeland security secretary, Chad Wolf, immediately withdraw “these federal paramilitary forces from our state”.

The members of Congress said they would be asking the DHS inspector general and the US Department of Justice to investigate.

“It’s painfully clear this administration is focused purely on escalating violence without answering my repeated requests for why this expeditionary force is in Portland and under what constitutional authority,” Senator Ron Wyden said.

On Thursday night, federal officers deployed tear gas and fired non-lethal rounds into a crowd of protesters. Wolf visited Portland on Thursday and called the demonstrators, who are protesting racism and police brutality, “violent anarchists”.

He blamed state and city authorities for not putting an end to the protests. But Portland police said on Friday they wound up arresting 20 people overnight.

At least two protests occurred Thursday night, one near the federal courthouse and the other by a police station in another part of the city. Police told protesters to leave that site after announcing they heard chanting about burning down the building. Protester Paul Frazier said the chant was “much more rhetorical than an actual statement”.

Portland police chief Chuck Lovell told reporters his officers are in contact with the federal agents, but that neither controls the others’ actions.

“We do communicate with federal officers for the purpose of situational awareness and deconfliction,“ Lovell said. “We’re operating in a very, very close proximity to one another.”

Remembering the late 60's, 70's when multiple antiwar protests a year were normal, most no trouble, uncommon was this reaction, it happened quick this time.

Even though the wars got permanent, the protests stopped, which is interesting. Then we start protesting again and this.

The unrest has gotta happen though, we need it I think, but not at our brothers, not divide and conquer.

"Katniss, remember who the enemy is."

Trump signals he will send federal agents to major cities
Brett Samuels 1 hr ago

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics ... d=msedgntp

President Trump on Monday signaled he may order federal agents to be deployed to Chicago, New York City, Philadelphia and other major cities as he threatens to crack down further on unrest across the country.

Trump was asked in the Oval Office about reports that the government was sending 175 federal troops to those cities to aid local law enforcement.

"Well, it depends on what your definition of 'troops' is," he told reporters. "I mean, we're sending law enforcement."

Trump cited heightened violence in Chicago and New York City, in particular, both of which have seen a rise in shootings in recent weeks. In the latter's case, he blamed city and state officials for restricting police from taking a stronger response.

"I'm going to do something - that, I can tell you," Trump said. "Because we're not going to let New York and Chicago and Philadelphia and Detroit and Baltimore and all of these - Oakland is a mess. We're not going to let this happen in our country. All run by liberal Democrats."

The government is expected to send 150 agents to Chicago this week. White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany told Fox News that the Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security would roll out specific plans of actions on deploying federal resources later in the day.

Trump has for weeks threatened federal intervention in major cities as protests against police brutality and racial inequality persist in the wake of the death of George Floyd in late May. He has fixated in recent days on the situation in Portland, Ore., where demonstrations have continued for more than 50 days leading to the administration sending in federal law enforcement to respond.

Democratic leaders and civil rights groups have condemned the Trump administration's actions in Portland, where people were reportedly being picked up by agents in unmarked vans over the weekend. Video has gone viral of law enforcement using a chemical irritant to disperse a group of mothers protesting in the street.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler (D) said Sunday the presence of federal law enforcement is leading to more violence in the city and called for their removal. Oregon Gov. Kate Brown (D) has also called for federal officers to be removed from the city and Oregon Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum (D) sued federal agencies on Friday over the detention of protesters.

But Trump on Monday argued that federal agents in Portland had done a "fantastic job" and claimed the Democratic leaders in the cities he named were unwilling to act to deter further violence.

"The governor and the mayor and the senators out there, they're afraid of these people," Trump said. "That's the reason they don't want us to help them. They're afraid. I really believe they're actually maybe even physically afraid of these people - because what they're doing is incredible.

I think I got the quote wrong, it's more appropriate in full, Katness was about to let go of the string and shoot the obvious enemy Finnick, when she remembered the words of Haymitch...

"Katniss, when you're in the arena, remember who the enemy is."

(Not Finnick, not blacks or whites nor any other way they distract/divide us... the capital is the enemy, the people we elected to represent the 1% in the war of the rich on the poor, the same as it's always been).

We're in the arena, and the enemy is the dupoply, and the 1% who have bought it.

The Republicans and the Democrats, Two Wings, Same Bird.

"When the U.S. citizenry recognizes the power it has at the ballot box, and rejects the candidates of the two major parties, real change will finally happen. "

and...

Why Government Mostly Helps People Who Need It the Least…Even During a Crisis

That money poured into the stock market and fueled its rise. The U.S. Treasury provided unprecedented direct cash supports to much of corporate America.

Over the same time, government economic support for the working class was too little, too late, and totally inadequate to what could and should have been done. In their unequal impacts, government economic policies were cruel and unjust. In this, they resemble government public health policies. With under 5 percent of the world’s population, the United States accounts for about 25 percent of COVID-19 cases and about 24 percent of COVID-19 deaths globally. All but the most ideologically blinded (and government supporters) know what such a statistic means.

I focus here on how the government’s economic policies affected corporations versus employees, the rich versus the middle class and the poor. Direct government support sustained most corporations. Bigger and richer corporations hire more and better lobbyists, make larger actual or potential donations to politicians and parties, and so on. They thus got big portions of government help.

...

Banks, corporations, and the rich used most of the new money to buy stocks from one another. That drove up stock prices. Each purchase by one Fed beneficiary was later sold to another Fed beneficiary at a higher price.

...

Recoveries for corporations and the rich were not matched by what government policies achieved for most employees. The differences were stark. Employers fired more than 40 million employees who were thus forced to file for unemployment benefits. The government did not rehire those millions (to undertake COVID-19 testing of the U.S. population, a Green New Deal for infrastructure, etc.). The unemployed faced mounting difficulties in meeting their financial obligations.

Neither GOP nor Democratic leaders generated anything like the set of government programs that saved the working class from greater catastrophe during the 1930s Great Depression. Then, FDR’s New Deal included establishing Social Security to provide monthly checks for all over 65, federal unemployment insurance, a minimum wage, and a federal jobs program that employed many millions of those fired by private employers.

It wasn’t just incomes that were lost by the millions who have been unemployed since March (losses usually far above the $1,200 check given many and the extra $600 per week for the insured unemployed). No guarantee was provided that their old jobs would be available to them again or that their eventual wages and benefits would be what they were before COVID-19. When would their unemployment insurance fall or end? If they refused to return to unsafe workplaces...

...

The government mostly does what its constituents with money and power make it do. In U.S. capitalism, most of the money and power are concentrated in a small minority: the corporate rich and their closest subordinates and allies. Occupy Wall Street referred to them as the 1 percent. Their interests prevail in government policies unless and until a genuinely countervailing power emerges from an organized mass of employees. Our big problem is not the government but the concentrated wealth and power that drive and control it. Above all, it is the economic system—the division in production, inside almost all enterprises, between a minority of employers profiting from a majority of employees—that concentrates wealth and power. The needs and demands of that concentrated wealth and power dominate what “our” governments do and do not do."

baddy's notes:

The rich want us back at work earning more money for them. Instead of subsidizing 70% of wages through employers so we'd have jobs to return to as other countries did, we got $1200 and tens of millions lost their jobs, and corporations got tens of billions of taxpayer's future earnings...this way we'll all be broke and be forced to go back to work...same with getting the kids back in school, so their parents can get back to work.

It's advantage to the rich for old people to die, they are expensive and increase taxes on the rich...much better we die off and leave the worker bees...they don't give a fuck about us...even if we elect Biden, they still don't give a fuck about us, (as VP Biden (and Obama)received multiple warnings of the upcoming pandemic, that we should prepare like South Korea who's cases spiked, and through contact tracing and disinfection, their numbers dropped back to nearly normal, and now their people can go out and back to school and work safely...we should have prepared decades ago...

...even in the mist of the pandemic we still have no coordinated plan for contact tracing and testing.... and H5N1 is coming with it's 60% death rate in 20 to 35 year olds... it WILL kill billions, the WHO, FEMA, and the CDC are warning about it, but it's kept off the news so the public does not know.

Faucci on the coming H5N1 pandemic, "Get rid of the if, this IS going to occur."

Gregory Poland of the Mayo Clinic in his testimony to congress (he failed in his attempt to get congress to do something), on H5N1: "I want to emphasize the certainty the pandemic will happen.... When this happens time will be described by survivors as before and after the pandemic. Billions will be killed, we are now half a step away from catastrophe."

Why isn't H5N1 on tv? Cuz the rich don't care about us, they're all set in their gated mansions with plenty of food and water to last the 18 months of H5N1 deaths.

Image

If South Korea could do it, why couldn't we, the richest country in the world do it? We may be the richest, but 1% own almost all of it and they don't care about us, they don't want to spend a dime on shit like protecting the low life bottom 90%.

And the rich and their TV has got the blacks and whites fighting now, they're happy our eyes are still not on them.

"If you're watching the news, the only thing you can be sure about is that you're not thinking about what you should be thinking about."
-baddy

"When you're in the arena, remember who the enemy is."

We're in the arena.

This chart shows the constant trajectory of the top 1% getting richer, and the bottom 90% hand over more and more and more of their earnings to the top 1%.

The trajectory is constant; the trajectory does not turn around and reverse when Democrats OR republicans are in the presidency or in control of congress...both parties are corrupt and our choices are either to reject the duopoly through our ability to simply vote the bastards out, OR continue to play their game and accept the trajectories in the chart.

The truth is the truth, here it is:

Two brothers, woman arrested following ‘massacre’ of friends on Florida fishing trip

FROSTPROOF, Fla. (WFLA) — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office arrested two brothers and a woman following the “massacre” of three close friends in Frostproof, Florida, Friday night.

Tony “TJ” Wiggins, 26, who Sheriff Grady Judd said “did the damage,” was charged with three counts of murder.

TJ’s girlfriend, Mary Whittemore, 27, and brother, Robert Wiggins, 21, were arrested and charged with being accessories to the murders.

The sheriff’s office said the victims, Brandon Rollins, 27, Keven Springfield, 30, and Damion Tillman, 23, planned a nighttime catfishing trip near Lake Streety Friday evening.

At 10:56 p.m. that night, Rollins’ father received a phone call from his son pleading for help. When his father drove to the lake where he knew his son would be, he found him and his two friends “shot up.”

Judd said just ten minutes prior to Rollins’ phone call to his father, Rollins’ friend Tillman was at a nearby Dollar General getting supplies for the fishing trip. Behind Tillman in line, Judd said, was TJ Wiggins. Also in the store were Robert Wiggins and Mary Wittemore.

Judd said TJ heard Tillman tell the clerk he was “going fishing with Keven Springfield.” TJ reportedly replied, “What? Keven’s gonna be there?” Judd said security footage showed Tillman and Wiggins have a somewhat normal conversation in the store before Tillman walked out.

The Wiggins brothers and Whittemore left the Dollar General after Tillman and got in their car. Robert Wiggins, who Judd said has been most cooperative with police, told detectives his brother told him to “go to the lake,” as he pulled away from the store.

Near the lake, the Wiggins brothers and Whittemore pulled up behind two trucks that had stopped with their windows down to talk. Inside one truck was Tillman. Rollins and Springfield were inside the other.

Judd said TJ got out of the vehicle, ran up to their trucks and asked, “Where’s Keven?” TJ Wiggins found Keven in the truck with Rollins, and allegedly pointed the gun at him demanding, “Where’s my truck? You stole the engine out of my truck!”

Judd said TJ Wiggins shot Brandon Rollins and Keven Springfield 9-10 times with his handgun. He then turned to Tillman and allegedly shot him several times.

Judd said the three suspects then got back in their car and drove to an undisclosed location where they stripped down the gun, took it apart, and threw it away. They then went to McDonald’s where Robert Wiggins said his brother told them, “We weren’t there.”

Judd said hundreds of tips came in on the case after Saturday morning’s press conference. So many calls were coming in, Judd said extra help was brought to the call center to help with the load.

The sheriff said a lot of tips area urged the sheriff’s office to check into a man named “TJ Wiggins.”

Wiggins, who was arrested for the first time when he was 12 years old, was walking free with 230 felony criminal charges in his arrest history, Judd said. He was most recently out on bond after breaking a man’s arm with a crowbar, according to Judd.

“He’s a thug,” the sheriff said. “He’s a criminal. He’s pure evil in the flesh. He’s wild and he’s out of control.”

While looking into the tips about TJ Wiggins, detectives identified him as the individual behind Tillman in the Dollar General security footage from Friday night before the fishing trip.

Detectives served a search warrant at the Wiggins “family compound” of camper trailers off Sarver Avenue in Lake Wales Monday. Judd said the family lives off the grid without running water or electricity.

During the search warrant, police reportedly found two rifles, two shotguns, and ammunition for both in a gun safe. Because TJ Wiggins is a convicted felon, he was placed under arrest for possession of firearms.

Judd said detectives also found ammunition that matched the shell casings found at the scene of the triple homicide. Investigators learned Whittemore allegedly purchased the ammunition for TJ in Lake Wales on July 9.

Mary Whittemore had no criminal history up until Friday night, Judd said. Robert Wiggins had just one misdemeanor arrest.

Neither TJ Wiggins nor Mary Whittemore are cooperating with detectives, the sheriff’s office says.

The police defended the massive fine saying the accused man had deliberately emitted a "massive flatulence"

Austrian police fined a man 500 euros for loudly breaking wind after officers stopped him earlier this month to check his identity.

The police defended the massive fine saying he had deliberately emitted a "massive flatulence," lifting his backside from the bench where he was sitting.

The accused complained of what he called the disproportionate and unjustified fine when he gave his account of the June 5 events on the O24 news website.

In reply to social media commentaries that followed, the police in the Austrian capital justified their reaction on Twitter.

"Of course, nobody is put on the spot if one slips out by accident," the police said.

However, in this case, the police said, the young man had appeared "provocative and uncooperative" in general.

He then "slightly raised himself from the bench, looked at the officers and patently, in a completely deliberate way, emitted a massive flatulence in their immediate proximity."

The police said the man can challenge the fine in the legal system.
