White House blocking Fauci from testifying before Congress
about coronavirus response

The White House has blocked Dr. Anthony Fauci from testifying about the response to the coronavirus crisis before the House Appropriations Committee, a spokesman for the committee told NBC News on Friday.

"The Appropriations Committee sought Dr. Anthony Fauci as a witness at next week's Labor-HHS-Education Subcommittee hearing on COVID-19 response. We have been informed by an administration official that the White House has blocked Dr. Fauci from testifying," the spokesperson, Evan Hollander, said.

He'd been asked to appear on May 6.

Dr. Anthony Fauci , director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases speaks during a meeting with US President Donald Trump and Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards D-LA in the Oval Office of the White House in Washington, DC on April 29, 2020.

But the White House said they will allow Fauci to testify at a Senate Health Committee hearing on May 12, a spokesperson for committee Chairman Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn., told NBC news.

Fauci, the head of the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, has been a key adviser in the Trump administration's fight against the coronavirus, and until recently, a fixture at the White House coronavirus briefings. He's also sat for numerous media interviews on the virus, including on sports podcasts.

In a statement, White House spokesman Judd Deere said the May 6 hearing is not an "appropriate" time for Fauci to go before the House.

"While the Trump Administration continues its whole-of-government response to COVID-19, including safely opening up America again and expediting vaccine development, it is counter-productive to have the very individuals involved in those efforts appearing at Congressional hearings," Deere said. "We are committed to working with Congress to offer testimony at the appropriate time."

In a joint statement, Appropriations chair Nita Lowey, D-N.Y., and subcommittee chair Rosa DeLauro, D-CT, said, "Congress and the American public deserve a clear-eyed view of the path forward for responding to the COVID-19 pandemic."

They said the hearing will proceed with hearing next week with testimony from Dr. Tom Frieden, who was director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention during the Obama administration.

Fauci last testified about the virus before the House on March 11, when he warned, "We will see more cases and things will get worse than they are right now." His testimony was cut short when he was called to a meeting on the virus at the White House.

Kim Jong Un resurfaces on state media with mysterious mark on wrist

State media footage released Saturday shows a mysterious mark on Kim Jong Un's wrist.

It’s all in the wrist — at least when it comes to figuring out what happened to the suddenly undead Kim Jong Un of North Korea.

State media released footage Saturday of the portly 38-year-old dictator riding an electric cart around the Sunchon Phosphatic Fertilizer factory with a new, mysterious mark on his wrist, NK News reported.

Information about the video and the mark on Kim’s wrist was very limited. A US medical professional told NK News that the small mark might signal a recent cardiovascular procedure, possibly a right, radial artery puncture.

Speculation has swirled about Kim’s health since he missed the April 15 birthday celebration for Kim Il Sung, his grandfather and the founder of North Korea.

The Daily NK, a Seoul-based publication that bases most of its reports on testimony from North Korean defectors and other sources inside the country, reported last week that Kim might have been recovering from surgery at a coastal resort. It reported Friday that something may have gone wrong for him healthwise “due to either excessive drinking or overwork.”

Grim Reaper Shows Up To Florida Beaches To Protest Reopenings
Posted by Robert Pasbani on May 3, 2020 at 1:03 pm

Much like Missouri, Florida is beginning to reopen again, including its beaches. The state has decreed beaches open, while some cities like Miami, where the outbreaks are more severe, are still keeping beaches closed. One Florida man took it upon himself to protest, by dressing up as the grim reaper in the Flordia panhandle on Friday.

Daniel Uhlfelder is the man under the mask, and WMBB 13, a local ABC affiliate have him the hot mic to explain why he was protesting. Here's the transcription, but it really does the footage no justice (just below)

“I’m here today to try to make a point that we need to — I think it’s premature that we open our beaches. I’m a huge proponent of public beaches and I’ve been fighting for that for years, but I think that the danger of bringing all the people here to our area and spreading the virus, I think it’s going to prolong the recovery we have and I think that we should take better measures. We’re drawing people from all over the world to our beautiful beaches. It’s too soon and it’s not appropriate.”

Come on, Daniel. Your protest can use some more guttural vocals.

Florida is the eighth most affected state for coronavirus infections based on data from Worldometer, with over 36,000 cases reported, 600 in the last day alone.

Venezuela's Maduro: Americans captured in failed coup plot
Florida-based ex-Green Beret officer says US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido part of plan to 'liberate' Venezuela.

Venezuelan security forces arrested dozens of people, including two Americans, after a beach invasion allegedly aimed at overthrowing President Nicolas Maduro - a plot said to involve US-backed opposition leader Juan Guaido.

US President Donald Trump on Tuesday said the Venezuela situation "has nothing to do with our government".

"We'll find out. We just heard about it," Trump said when asked about the incident and the Americans' arrest.

Maduro held up a pair of blue US passports, reading off the names and birth dates on them in a nationwide broadcast on state television on Monday.

He showed images of the fishing boats the alleged attackers rode in on and equipment such as walkie-talkies and night-vision glasses. He blamed the attacks on the Trump administration and neighbouring Colombia, both of which have denied involvement.

"The United States government is fully and completely involved in this defeated raid," Maduro said, praising members of a fishing village for cornering one group and netting the "professional American mercenaries".

A person familiar with the matter told Reuters news agency the two US citizens were captured on Monday in a second-day roundup of accomplices, and were believed to be in the custody of Venezuelan military intelligence. The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the details came from contacts with Venezuelan security forces.

A Florida-based ex-Green Beret Jordan Goudreau told The Associated Press he was working with the two American men in a mission launched early on Sunday to "liberate" Venezuela. The operation left eight people dead at a beach near the port city of La Guaira.

He identified the two former US military veterans taken into Venezuelan custody as Luke Denman and Aaron Berry. The two served alongside him in Iraq and Afghanistan, Goudreau said.

Goudreau said the men were part of an mission called Operation Gideon.

Opposition politicians and US authorities issued statements suggesting Maduro's allies fabricated the assault to draw attention away from the country's problems.

Political, economic turmoil

Venezuela has been in a deepening political and economic crisis under Maduro's rule.

Crumbling public services such as running water, electricity and medical care have driven nearly five million people to migrate.

But Maduro still controls all levers of power despite a US-led campaign to remove him. It recently indicted Maduro as a drug trafficker and offered a $15m reward for his arrest.

Venezuela and the US broke diplomatic ties last year amid heightened tensions, so there is no US embassy in Caracas.

"I've tried to engage everybody I know at every level," Goudreau said of the attempt to help his detained colleagues. "Nobody's returning my calls, It's a nightmare."

Goudreau said he signed a contract with the US-backed Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido to overthrow Maduro, which Guaido has denied. The opposition leader said he had nothing to do with Sunday's raid.

Venezuela's attorney general said the contract was valued at $200m and alleged he had seen Guaido's signature on it.

'Mercenaries'

Goudreau said the opposition politician never fulfilled the contract, but he pushed ahead with an underfunded operation with just 60 fighters, including the two US veterans.

He said he last communicated with Denman and Berry when they were adrift in a boat "hugging" the Caribbean coast off Venezuela. They were still in their boat following an initial confrontation with the Venezuelan navy early Sunday, he said.

"They were running dangerously low on fuel," Goudreau said. "If they had gone onto landfall, they would have gone to a safe house."

Goudreau said the two were waiting for a boat on the Caribbean island of Aruba with emergency fuel to help extract them.

Venezuelan authorities said on Monday they arrested another eight "mercenaries" in a coastal town and showed images on state TV of several unidentified men handcuffed and lying prone in a street.

Among them was a National Guardsman Captain Antonio Sequea, who participated in a barracks revolt against Maduro a year ago. Goudreau said Sequea was a commander working with him in recent days on the ground in Venezuela.

Venezuelan state TV showed authorities handling a shirtless Sequea in handcuffs.

Maduro ally and Attorney General Tarek William Saab said in total they arrested 114 people suspected of involvement in the attempted attack and they are on the hunt for 92 others.

Officials in Venezuela's government accuse Colombia and the US of organising and carrying out the attack aiming to overthrow Maduro. Both US and Colombian officials have denied the Venezuelan allegations.

Goudreau, a three-time Bronze Star US combat veteran, said the deadly seaborne raid was launched from Colombia.

An AP investigation published on Friday found Goudreau had been working with a retired Venezuelan army general - who now faces US narcotics charges - to train dozens of deserters from Venezuela's security forces at secret camps inside Colombia.

Guaido on Monday denied having anything to do with the ex-Green Beret. In a statement, he said he has "no relationship nor responsibility for any actions" taken by the US war veteran.

Here, we march for a pile of 10,000+ dead Brazilians. I won't even dwell into the major political crisis we are going though with the gang$ta in power, because I guess, apart a few cats, you wouldn't have a clue or even giving a speck of cereal about it. Meanwhile...

COVID-19 in Brazil: “So what?”

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic reached Latin America later than other continents. The first case recorded in Brazil was on Feb 25, 2020. But now, Brazil has the most cases and deaths in Latin America (105 222 cases and 7288 deaths as of May 4), and these are probably substantial underestimates. Even more worryingly, the doubling of the rate of deaths is estimated at only 5 days and a recent study by Imperial College (London, UK), which analysed the active transmission rate of COVID-19 in 48 countries, showed that Brazil is the country with the highest rate of transmission (R0 of 2·81). Large cities such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro are the main hotspots now but there are concerns and early signs that infections are moving inland into smaller cities with inadequate provisions of intensive care beds and ventilators. Yet, perhaps the biggest threat to Brazil's COVID-19 response is its president, Jair Bolsonaro.

When asked by journalists last week about the rapidly increasing numbers of COVID-19 cases, he responded: “So what? What do you want me to do?” He not only continues to sow confusion by openly flouting and discouraging the sensible measures of physical distancing and lockdown brought in by state governors and city mayors but has also lost two important and influential ministers in the past 3 weeks. First, on April 16, Luiz Henrique Mandetta, the respected and well liked Health Minister, was sacked after a television interview, in which he strongly criticised Bolsonaro's actions and called for unity, or else risk leaving the 210 million Brazilians utterly confused. Then on April 24, following the removal of the head of Brazil's federal police by Bolsonaro, Justice Minister Sérgio Moro, one of the most powerful figures of the right-wing government and appointed by Bolsonaro to combat corruption, announced his resignation. Such disarray at the heart of the administration is a deadly distraction in the middle of a public health emergency and is also a stark sign that Brazil's leadership has lost its moral compass, if it ever had one.

Even without the vacuum of political actions at federal level, Brazil would have a difficult time to combat COVID-19. About 13 million Brazilians live in favelas, often with more than three people per room and little access to clean water. Physical distancing and hygiene recommendations are near impossible to follow in these environments—many favelas have organised themselves to implement measures as best as possible. Brazil has a large informal employment sector with many sources of income no longer an option. The Indigenous population has been under severe threat even before the COVID-19 outbreak because the government has been ignoring or even encouraging illegal mining and logging in the Amazon rainforest. These loggers and miners now risk bringing COVID-19 to remote populations. An open letter on May 3 by a global coalition of artists, celebrities, scientists, and intellectuals, organised by the Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Salgado, warns of an impending genocide.
What are the health and science community and civil society doing in a country known for its activism and outspoken opposition to injustice and inequity and with health as a constitutional right? Many scientific organisations, such as the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and ABRASCO, have long-opposed Bolsonaro because of severe cuts in the science budget and a more general demolition of social security and public services. In the context of COVID-19, many organisations have launched manifestos aimed at the public—such as Pact for Life and Brazil—and written statements and pleas to government officials calling for unity and joined up solutions. Pot-banging from balconies as protest during presidential announcements happens frequently. There is much research going on, from basic science to epidemiology, and there is rapid production of personal protective equipment, respirators, and testing kits.

These are hopeful actions. Yet, leadership at the highest level of government is crucial in quickly averting the worst outcome of this pandemic, as is evident from other countries. In our 2009 Brazil Series, the authors concluded: “The challenge is ultimately political, requiring continuous engagement by Brazilian society as a whole to secure the right to health for all Brazilian people.” Brazil as a country must come together to give a clear answer to the “So what?” by its President. He needs to drastically change course or must be the next to go.

Queen's Brian May hospitalised for butt injury
Christi Carras·10:50, May 09 2020

Queen guitarist Brian May recently took a trip to the hospital after severely injuring his buttocks in a gardening accident.

"I managed to rip my Gluteus Maximus to shreds in a moment of over-enthusiastic gardening," the musician shared Thursday on Instagram, along with a masked selfie.

"So suddenly I find myself in a hospital getting scanned to find out exactly how much I've actually damaged myself.

"Turns out I did a thorough job."

Image

Brian May in hospital after gardening accident

In a time where hospitalisation announcements are all too common, May, 72, also made sure to clarify he does not have COVID-19 - "thank God" - and advised his 2.4 million followers to be "extra-safe out there."

"A decision to relax controls doesn't suddenly make the danger go away," he added, possibly referring to the gradual reopenings of several territories amid the coronavirus crisis.

As for the "reality check" of a gardening incident, May offered few details, but noted that he is in a lot of pain.

"I won't be able to walk for a while ... or sleep, without a lot of assistance, because the pain is relentless," he wrote.

"So, folks ... I need to go dark for a while, getting some complete rest, at home."

The rock star posted a follow-up "micro-rant" about the pandemic hours later - as opposed to his usual #JamWithBri "MicroConcert" videos that he has been filming from home to lift spirits during the lockdown.

"Not very coherent, I'm sure - I'm tired and in pain - but an attempt to say - before it's too late - 'Wake up Britain' - and 'Rise to the occasion, Boris (Johnson),'" he wrote, taking aim at the United Kingdom's prime minister.

"The world we had before this CoronaVirus was not good enough. We need a radical rethink."

"I believe this country wants a better world," he continued in a video message, which touched on the health care system, animal cruelty and pollution, among other issues.

"The world before is the one that got us into this mess. It needs to be changed. And you, Mr. Boris Johnson, I believe you can do that. ...

"But some terrible mistakes have been made under your watch."

May has been busy in quarantine, staging frequent Instagram Live performances; uniting with drummer Roger Taylor and singer Adam Lambert to release a "You Are the Champions" anthem celebrating health care heroes; hosting a music marathon on the U.K.'s Planet Radio; and, apparently, going a bit too hard in the garden.

"Please, please don't send me sympathy - I just need some healing silence for a while," he concluded Thursday's hospital post.

"I'll be back - but I need the complete break. OKThanks. Take care out there."
