EXCELLENT post, Baddy.

I'm not as big a fan of Merkel as my wife is, but I think Merkel's reaction to Fukishima was the correct one i.e. if not even the Japanese can cope with nuclear power, what's the point in anyone else trying?

Thanks Caputh, it's pretty amazing what Americans will roll over for. Ralph Nader once said, "American's can have anything they want, the only thing is they don't seem to want anything."

Thanks downer for the nice personal attack, I'm sure the whole forum benefited from your input :)

Ayup. And now there's this:

Irma caused such damage on the island of St Maarten (a country within the Kingdom of The Netherlands) that there's no communication possible with the island. There's no electricity, the infamous airport is damaged and the harbour is hard to reach.

The Dutch navy is on its way. A helicopter made these images a few hours ago:

It is surprising and sad that in the 21st Century, there are still French, British and Dutch territories in the Americas.

"Their" territories are a great place to test nuclear and who knows what other weapons without contaminating their own mainlands for centuries :P

GG, those territories are infinitely better off than Suriname (currently in great debt because the idjits there decided to elect a convicted drug dealer as president), Indonesia or any of the other former Dutch colonies. South Africa is back on its feet but barely, and it took a Mandela to get out of the rut.

There are 6 islands in the Caribbean that are currently part of the Dutch kingdom: Aruba, Bonaire, Curacao, Saba, St Eustatius and St Maarten. Their status has changed several times, most recently in 2010, when on all these islands, polls were held to determine the future of their respective countries. Aruba, Curacao and St Maarten all wished for more autonomy and are now separate countries within the Dutch kingdom. Bonaire, Saba and St Eustatius are special municipalities.

Aruba and Curacao get by by being tax paradises.
The government of St Maarten is ride with corruption and has often been chided for this.

Because of its separate status it's now become difficult to help the island. There's plundering galore.

Those former colonies, including ourselves, are all fucked up, in large part, because the whole system was rigged from the beginning, after centuries of robbery, assault and battery...

I am glad the hurricane didn't wreak havoc in some other places...

50 volunteers help police search for missing men

Conditions are treacherous in Kaimanawa Forest Park, where two men have been missing since the weekend, a search and rescue coordinator says.

The men were fleeing police in a stolen car on the Desert Road on Saturday, but abandoned it on the boundary of Tongaririo National Park and entered the forest.

On Sunday, one of the men called the police asking to be rescued. Searchers found clothing on Tuesday believed to have been abandoned by the men, who were thought to be suffering hypothermia.

Search and Rescue coordinator Cliff Jones said conditions were very tough, misty with heavy rain and snow at higher levels.

"There's a lot of snow, there's a lot of broken trees, and trees were breaking around us up the top that would have been damaged by the snow, and they would have had to experience that and it wouldn't have been easy."

Mr Jones said anyone without the right equipment would find the going very difficult.

He did not want to speculate on the men's chances of survival but said he was still confident the search teams would be able to find them.

Senior sergeant Tony Jeurissen said about 50 Land Search and Rescue, police and Defence Force staff and volunteers had been trekking through the bush today in torrential rain.

"It hasn't been easy for them. They've been wet, they've been cold, they've had to keep moving, but the focus has always been to find these two young men and return them to their families."

People suffering hypothermia have been known to remove their clothes after becoming delirious.

Hākopa Ngaronoa, 26, and Vincent Taurima, 21, went missing in August.

Police have this found the bodies of two men who went missing in the Tongariro National Park in early August.

Friends Hākopa Ngaronoa, 26, and Vincent Taurima, 21, went missing after they allegedly fled from a police chase on the Desert Road.

A car was abandoned on a track by Tree Trunk Gorge Road, off the Desert Road, mid-afternoon on August 12, police said at the time.

The police dive squad took part in the search for two men in Tongariro National Park.

Two days later, police put out a statement saying they had serious concerns for two men in their 20s who were lost in the bush - thought to be the driver and passenger.

What turned into a four-week search through dense scrub was already under way, and eventually involved police, LandSAR, specialist search teams, Police National Dive Squad, dogs, and hundreds of volunteers.

Many of the searchers were volunteers and some travelled from as far as Auckland and Wellington to help.

The men's whānau (family) has been informed that their bodies have been found, and Police Iwi (community) Liaison Officers are offering them support, a police statement said.

The bodies have been removed from the national park and will be returned to their families.

The deaths will be referred to the coroner.

First automated checkout lines eliminated another human worker.
Then the automated car takes the job of the cab driver.
Now the fembot will put human assassins out of a job.
