I'm tipping France this time - which probably means they'll be out in the first round.

Guten Tag Fritz, wie geht's?

We have a world cup pool and a few world cup matches at work. For the matches - I'm in a quiz one, team Portugal. We also have a cup for the best Playstation 4 footballer.
For the pools... when in 2004 my father came home from work he asked me to fill in his - and I, who knew only just enough about football to explain the offside rule, ended in 4th place. The sour spot since only the first three won a prize. We'll see what happens, I just blind picked names (I know Messi but that's it...)

German TV had this lovely skit back in 2014 for which speaking football-German is mandatory:

And I'm still not tired of it!

A pity you couldn't make the revenge yourselves. Brazil would have thrashed this German team. South Korea? Ho ho ho.

Diego Maradona claims Colombia were victims of 'monumental theft' in loss to England
Last updated 09:44, July 5 2018

Argentinian football legend Diego Maradona has claimed that Colombia were victims of a "monumental theft" in an extraordinary rant after their round of 16 defeat to England at the Fifa World Cup.

England won 4-3 on penalties for their first ever shootout victory at a World Cup after a tight contest at Moscow's Spartak Stadium finished 1-1 after extra time.

Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal that helped knock England out of the 1986 World Cup is the most infamous act of cheating in tournament history, but the 57-year-old believes that American referee Mark Geiger favoured England against Colombia and accused star English striker Harry Kane of diving for the penalty that gave the Three Lions the lead.

AP Diego Maradona claims Colombia were robbed against England.

"I saw a monumental theft. I apologise to all the Colombian people, but they must know the players are not to blame," Maradona told Venezuela-based TV channel Telesur.

Fifa responded by strongly rebuking Maradona, whose "insinuations" were "entirely inappropriate and completely unfounded."

"Ffia is extremely sorry to read such declarations from a player who has written the history of our game," it said in a statement.

Maradona was attending the match as a 'Fifa legend' despite his role as an ambassador earlier coming under scrutiny at the World Cup in Russia because of his antics during Argentina's games at the tournament.

"It is the man who decides who the referee is who is to blame," he said of Pierluigi Collina, the chairman of Fifa's referees committee.

"A man like that [Geiger] should not be put in charge of a game of that magnitude. With all due respect, Pierluigi Collina, as the man who designates the referees, he is very bad. He must apologise to the Colombian people.

GETTY IMAGES Maradona's 'Hand of God' goal is the most famous act of cheating in World Cup history.

"I told [Fifa president] Gianni Infantino that, if I worked for Fifa, I would change everything. It has to be transparent. That's why I didn't go there.

"The referee will know a lot about baseball, but he has no idea about football. The Colombian players asked for VAR [Video Assistant Referee intervention] and he did not give it to them.

"Twice, the English threw themselves to the ground and he did not admonish them. This was theft."

AP "where's th' coke!"
Maradona attended England and Colombia's round of 16 clash as a Fifa legend.

There were two incidents when English players Jordan Henderson and Harry Maguire went down easily in the penalty area but Maradona was really irate about the award of England's penalty in the second half.

Kane was clumsily bundled to the ground by Colombian midfielder Carlos Sanchez and the England skipper scored from the spot to give the Three Lions a 1-0 lead.

"The penalty was not a foul. In fact, it was Kane's fault," Maradona went on.

AP Maradona says Kane dived here.

"The referee is looking somewhere else and when he turns his head, Kane is on the floor.

"Kane used his arm to hook Sanchez and then threw himself down. I repeat, why didn't the referee ask for the VAR? Colombia died standing. That's why I applaud them."

Maradona's Argentina were knocked out in the round of 16 after losing 4-3 to France, while England advanced to the quarter-finals and face Sweden on Saturday (Sunday NZ time).

So sad Canada didn't make it this year

PS. Oh, they didn't make it since 1986, their only participation in world cups, where they left in last...

I heard Trump was cheering for Brazil in the last Brazil x Mexico game, where Neymar scored in the horizontal, because the Brazilians sent the Mexicans back home (ok that was mean).

I guess that's why Uncle Bernie dug up that photo, instead of me.

Oz has a bit better record. But nothing near five-times champion.

D'Oh!

Brazil out, Mr GG! HOW COULD YOu DO THIS TO ME! I tipped them for the semi-finals.

It's basically the European Championship now. I tipped on France to win the camp right from the beginning, but am beginning to have doubts about it. Where is their je ne sais quoi?

Still, we reign sovereign, at least for the next four years, as the only team with five(-five-FIVE) titles.

In other words, you don't have anything to do for the next four years... :P
