One for me is Devin Townsend. I knew about Devin from the start being a Steve Vai fan and owning the Sex & Religion album. I thought his vocals were pretty unique and after initially thinking that was not one of Vai’s best that album has grown on me over the years.

I’ve never owned Strapping Young Lad album as that style (extreme metal?) has never appealed to me but I became interested in some of the Devin Townsend/Band/Project albums when I heard that they leaned more towards progressive rock and I heard some of his fans calling him a genius. I also detected a sense of humor with albums like Ziltoid.

Well, in the last 15 years I’ve tried listening to (and actually purchased) 3-4 of his albums and I’ve found nothing memorable about any of them. Few chord changes, few if any solos, simplistic/minimalist lyrics, and that Gene Hoglan style of soulless speed metal drumming. Pretty boring overall. What am I missing?

^^ I’ve tried with Dream Theater too. Their musicianship is impressive but I don’t find their music memorable and I don’t like the vocals.

Rolling Stones.
Over 4,000 albums, and no Stones albums (I do have the "Brown Sugar" 45, though)

The Cure though I admit there is one song I hear on Satellite radio sometimes that I like. I can’t remember the name of it though.

Nirvana

I did like Smells Like Teen Spirit and I guess a couple other songs on that album were ok but anything else by them I thought was god awful. Even when they covered the Meat Puppets who I really like.

some bands/artists I gave up on:

genesis • after 'the lamb lies down on broadway'
peter gabriel • after his 4th
radiohead • after 'ok computer'
bruce springsteen • after 'born to run'
yes • after 'tales from topographic oceans'
fleetwood mac • after the peter green years
pink floyd • after 'wish you were here'
('animals' and 'the wall' had their moments, though...)

a couple of bands I never could stand at all, to begin with:

u2 • one of the most overrated bands ever.
(and the edge is the worst guitar player to ever have walked on the planet earth)
rush • same as u2

and, I'm sure I can think of more examples later...

Springsteen. I had the first LP!
Country, aside from Cash, Willie and a few 50s rednecks.
Nearly all of Chicago.
Santana.
Blood Sweat and Tears
And...ready?
Captain Beefheart on his own.
