At left is the new Nauka module of the International Space Station. As the Russian team was powering it up, the module's thrusters were suddenly activated by a software glitch.

It took 47 minutes to trace down the problem and turn off the thrusters. During that time, the entire space station rotated backward 540 degrees (normally, it would have rotated forward about 180 degrees, so as to keep the crew areas pointed toward the Earth and the radiation shielding pointed toward open space).

If this had gone on much longer, it could have turned into a pretty dicey situation. The station relies on its solar array to power its systems; if the station is rotating in a random way, it becomes nearly impossible to keep the solar array pointed at the Sun. If necessary, the battery backup system could run the station for several weeks in low-power mode. But that's a solution nobody wants...

Galaxies, galaxies everywhere - as far as NASA's Hubble Space Telescope can see. This view of nearly 10,000 galaxies is the deepest visible-light image of the cosmos. Called the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, this galaxy-studded view represents a "deep" core sample of the universe, cutting across billions of light-years.

The snapshot includes galaxies of various ages, sizes, shapes, and colors. The smallest, reddest galaxies, about 100, may be among the most distant known, existing when the universe was just 800 million years old. The nearest galaxies - the larger, brighter, well-defined spirals and ellipticals - thrived about 1 billion years ago, when the cosmos was 13 billion years old.

In vibrant contrast to the rich harvest of classic spiral and elliptical galaxies, there is a zoo of oddball galaxies littering the field. Some look like toothpicks; others like links on a bracelet. A few appear to be interacting. These oddball galaxies chronicle a period when the universe was younger and more chaotic. Order and structure were just beginning to emerge.

The Ultra Deep Field observations, taken by the Advanced Camera for Surveys, represent a narrow, deep view of the cosmos. Peering into the Ultra Deep Field is like looking through an eight-foot-long soda straw.

In ground-based photographs, the patch of sky in which the galaxies reside (just one-tenth the diameter of the full Moon) is largely empty. Located in the constellation Fornax, the region is so empty that only a handful of stars within the Milky Way galaxy can be seen in the image.

In this image, blue and green correspond to colors that can be seen by the human eye, such as hot, young, blue stars and the glow of Sun-like stars in the disks of galaxies. Red represents near-infrared light, which is invisible to the human eye, such as the red glow of dust-enshrouded galaxies.

The image required 800 exposures taken over the course of 400 Hubble orbits around Earth. The total amount of exposure time was 11.3 days, taken between Sept. 24, 2003 and Jan. 16, 2004.

^^^ That Hubble Deep Field never gets old... It makes me wonder, are we alone? And I guess also my (and this stupid planet's), problems don't seem so big anymore :D

Here's a fun one, ringless Saturn as captured by Hubble's Wide Field Planetary Camera.

Every 15 years or so Earth crosses through the ring plane of Saturn's rings, making them edge on and "disappearing" for about 2 weeks. We spend 15 years "looking down" on Saturn's rings, go through a crossing, then spend the next 15 years looking up her dress.

Huge Titan is always easy, but removing the rings reduces a lot of glare and backyarders can use the crossing to make out more of Saturn's fainter satellites, and you can also slide Saturn just out of the eyepiece and make out more satellites, it has a crapload of them.

Excellent, I can't get enough of that stuff.....or this stuff.....

NASA Earth From Space - Earth Viewing cameras ISS feed

Right now we have major road works taking place on the the main road into the valley,
initially the lengthy detour was, shall we say challenging, and one of the cavettes who
shall remain nameless, took a little longer to familiarise herself with the new route
than Cookie and I and got herself turned around and ended up lost in a nice little overgrown
parking area at the entrance to one of the valley's long forgotten walking tracks up onto the
romantically named Blue Mountains road, which turned out to be a great little elevated spot
mere minutes from cave central, giving us excellent darkish night sky views to the east, previously
we would have to drive for a good fifteen to twenty minutes, bush bash for another fifteen to twenty then
set up camp for, what it has to be said, is only fractionally darker than our newly discovered observation location.....

Now we await a clear night in the valley of mist.....

That is obviously artificial and at 90 meters or approximately 300 feet it is the equivalent of a 30 story building, nature doesn't make 30 story building advanced civilizations do, it seems like someone was trying to get some attention...
